AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing alkaline electrolysis systems suffer from non-uniform fluid flow and electrical current distribution, leading to temperature inconsistencies, reduced reagent distribution, inefficient gas bubble removal, and increased overvoltages, which diminish the production of molecular hydrogen and oxygen.

Method used

A bipolar plate design with lye-permeable elements arranged along the internal circumference of the peripheral ring, disrupting fluid streams into multiple orientations, ensuring uniform flow distribution and reducing stagnant zones.

Benefits of technology

Enhances fluid renewal and reagent distribution, improves temperature uniformity, and reduces overvoltages, thereby increasing the efficiency and productivity of molecular hydrogen and oxygen production.

Abstract

Bipolar plate, electrolytic cell, electrolyser stack, water electrolysis plant and alkaline water electrolysis method The present invention relates to a bipolar plate (100, 100') for an electrolytic cell (10) of an electrolyser stack (1). According to the invention, the bipolar plate (100, 100') has at least one flow-disrupting element which is a lye-permeable element (50) and is arranged against the internal circumference of the peripheral ring (43) where a supply passage (40) or extraction passage (41) emerges. Further, the flow-disrupting element covers a portion of the surface of the disc (42) lower than the total surface of the disc (42). Other aspects of the invention relate to an electrolytic cell equipped with such a bipolar plate, to an electrolyser stack comprising a stack of such electrolytic cells, to an electrolysis plant comprising such an electrolyser stack, and to an alkaline water electrolysis method implemented in such a plant.
