Abstract

An aerosol delivery device and packaging for the aerosol delivery device is disclosed. The aerosol delivery device comprises a housing, and the packaging comprises first and second portions that extend about the housing. The first portion of the packaging forms at least a part of the housing, and the second portion is detachable from, or displaceable relative to, the first portion to enable use of the aerosol delivery device with the first portion remaining in situ.

[0003] The present disclosure relates to an aerosol delivery device and packaging for said aerosol delivery device.

[0004] Background

[0005] Certain tobacco industry products produce an aerosol which is inhaled by a user during use. For example, tobacco heating devices heat an aerosol generating substrate such as tobacco to form an aerosol by heating, but not burning, the substrate. Such tobacco industry products commonly include mouthpieces through which the aerosol passes to reach the user’s mouth.

[0006] Summary According to an aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an aerosol delivery device and packaging for said aerosol delivery device, wherein the aerosol delivery device comprises a housing and the packaging comprises first and second portions that extend about the housing, wherein said first portion of the packaging forms at least a part of the housing, the second portion being detachable from, or displaceable relative to, said first portion to enable use of the aerosol delivery device with the first portion remaining in situ.

[0039] Detailed Description As used herein, the term “delivery device” is intended to encompass devices that deliver at least one substance to a user, and includes: non-combustible aerosol provision systems that release compounds from an aerosol-generating material without combusting the aerosol-generating material, such as electronic cigarettes, tobacco heating products, and hybrid systems to generate aerosol using a combination of aerosol-generating materials.

[0040] According to the present disclosure, a “non-combustible” aerosol provision system is one where a constituent aerosol-generating material of the aerosol provision system (or component thereof) is not combusted or burned in order to facilitate delivery of at least one substance to a user.

[0050] Figures 1 and 2 illustrate an aerosol delivery device and packaging for the aerosol delivery device according to embodiments of the invention. The aerosol delivery device 1 comprises a housing 2, and the packaging 3 for the device 1 comprises first and second portions 4, 5 which extend about the housing 2. In some embodiments, the first and second portions 4, 5 of the packaging 3 together extend about the whole of the housing 2 to hermetically seal the aerosol delivery device 1 within the packaging 3. In this manner, the packaging 3 protects the device 1 from the ingress of dirt, liquid, etc. and removes the need for separate traditional silicone seals. The first portion 4 of the packaging 3 forms at least a part of the housing 2 of the device 1 and the second portion 5 is detachable from, or at least displaceable relative to, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3. In this manner, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 can be removed from the device 1 to enable use of the device 1 with the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 remaining in situ.

[0051] The aerosol delivery device 1 comprises a body 6, a mouthpiece 7, and a passage 8 through which the flow of aerosolised material flows from the body 6 into a user’s mouth during use of the device 1. Additionally, the body 6 comprises a vent 9 to allow airflow through the device 1.

[0052] As shown in Figure 1, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 is attached to the body 6 of the device 1 and the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 covers the mouthpiece 7. As shown in Figure 2, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 forms the body 6 of the aerosol delivery device 1. In other words, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 and the body 6 of the device 1 are integral with one another. The second portion 5 of the packaging 3 covers the mouthpiece 7 and is detachable or displaceable relative to the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 so that a user can obtain access to the mouthpiece 7 in order to use the device 1. In some embodiments, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 also covers the vent 9 in the body 6 of the device 1. Providing packaging that forms the body of the device removes the need to provide external packaging and thus reduces material usage. Additionally, if the packaging is formed from a recyclable material, this improves the recyclability of the device itself.

[0053] In some embodiments, where the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 is not attached to the body 6 with permanent adhesive, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 and the body 6 of the device 1 can be separated from one another. In both of the depicted embodiments, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3 may be formed from a flexible sheet material. The flexible sheet material either forms the body 6 of the device 1 or is attached to the exterior surface 10 of the body 6 of the device 1. The flexible sheet material may be formed from paper, cardboard or any other recyclable material. The second portion 5 of the packaging 3 can also be made from paper, cardboard or any other recyclable material. In particular, the first and second portions 4, 5 of the packaging 3 may be formed from the same material. In order to form the packaging 3, the flexible sheet material may be wrapped around the exterior surface 10 of the body 6 of the device 1. In some embodiments, the flexible sheet is spirally wound around the exterior surface 10 of the device body 6 multiple times to form a multi-layered structure extending around the body 6. This results in a more robust packaging which can be recycled. Alternatively, in embodiments where the first portion of the packaging forms the body of the device, the flexible sheet material may be spirally wound multiple times to form a multi-layered structure. In other words, the flexible sheet material may be used to form a tubular-shaped body for the device. Additionally, the flexible sheet material may carry printed matter which is initially hidden from view. The flexible sheet material may be configured to be partially unwound to enable the user to view the printed matter.

[0054] In some embodiments, the aerosol delivery device i and packaging 3 comprise a sealing member 11 positioned to seal an open end 12 of the passage 8 in the mouthpiece 7. The sealing member 11 is configured to provide an airtight seal over the open end 12 of the passage 8 to ensure integrity of the device 1 during transit and to act as a leakage barrier. The sealing member 11 may be constructed as a film seal over the mouthpiece 7, and in some embodiments, may be retained in a sealing position by the second portion 5 of the packaging 3. The film seal maybe formed from materials which are more easily recycled than traditional silicone seals, for example plastic or paper. Furthermore, the sealing member 11 may be attached to, or integral with, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3. In these arrangements, when the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 is detached from, or displaced relative to, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3, the sealing member 11 is automatically removed to open the passage 8 in the mouthpiece 7. In the depicted embodiments, the sealing member 11 comprises a deformable paper plug 13 that extends into the passage 8. This removes the need for separate silicone seals and improves the recyclability of the device and packaging.

[0055] Additionally, in some embodiments, the aerosol delivery device 1 and packaging 3 comprise a vent sealing member 14 positioned to seal the vent 9 in the body 6 of the device 1. The vent sealing member 14 is configured to provide an airtight seal over the vent 9 to ensure integrity of the device 1 during transit and to act as a leakage barrier. The vent sealing member 14 may constructed as a film seal over the vent 9, and in some embodiments, may be retained in a sealing position by the second portion 5 of the packaging 3. The film seal may be formed from materials which are more easily recycled than traditional silicone seals, for example plastic or paper. Furthermore, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 the vent sealing member 14 may be attached to, or integral with, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3. In these arrangements, when the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 is detached from, or displaced relative to, the first portion 4 of the packaging 3, the vent sealing member 14 is automatically removed to open the vent 8 in the body 6. Additionally, in the depicted embodiments, the vent sealing member 14 comprises a deformable paper plug 15 that extends into the vent 9. This removes the need for separate silicone seals and improves the recyclability of the device and packaging. In some embodiments, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 positioned to seal the vent 9 is separate to, or detachable from, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 positioned to seal the passage 8 in the mouthpiece 7. In particular, the two portions may be joined by a line of weakening which can be broken by the user to remove either portion. Additionally, the first and second portions 4, 5 of the packaging 3 maybe joined by a line of weakening. The lines of weakening allow the user to separate the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 covering the mouthpiece 7 and / or vent 9 from the first portion 4 of the packaging 3. The lines of weakness maybe formed by laser etching which results in the line of weakening extending only partially through the thickness of the material of the package 3. Alternatively, the lines of weakness may extend through the entire thickness of the material of the package 3. In some embodiments, the first and second portions 4, 5 of the packaging 3 may be joined by a tear tape. The tear tape may comprise a pull tab which the user is able to pull to remove the tear tape and separate the first and second portions 4, 5 of the packaging 3. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 is reattachable or repositionable to recover the vent 9 and / or restrict access to the mouthpiece 7 after the second portion 5 of the packaging 3 have been removed or displaced. Additionally, the sealing member 11 and / or vent sealing member 14 are repositionable to re-seal the passage 8 in the mouthpiece 7 and / or the vent 9 in the body 6.

Claims

Claims i. An aerosol delivery device and packaging for said aerosol delivery device, wherein the aerosol delivery device comprises a housing and the packaging comprises first and second portions that extend about the housing, wherein said first portion of the packaging forms at least a part of the housing, the second portion being detachable from, or displaceable relative to, said first portion to enable use of the aerosol delivery device with the first portion remaining in situ.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 1, wherein the housing comprises a body and a mouthpiece having a passage therethrough for the flow of aerosolised material from the body into a user’s mouth during use, said first portion of the packaging forms at least a part of the body of the aerosol delivery device, the second portion of the packaging being detachable or displaceable relative to the first portion to obtain access to the mouthpiece.

3. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 2, wherein the first portion of the packaging is attached to the body of the aerosol delivery device.

4. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claims 2 or 3, wherein the body comprises an exterior surface and the first portion of the packaging is attached to said exterior surface.

5. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 4, wherein the first portion of the packaging is formed from a flexible sheet material attached to the exterior surface.

6. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 5, wherein the flexible sheet material is paper, cardboard or other recyclable material.

7. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the flexible sheet material is wrapped around the exterior surface.

8. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 7, wherein the flexible sheet material is spirally wound around the exterior surface multiple times to form a multi-layered structure extending about the body.

9. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 8, wherein the flexible sheet material carries printed matter and can be at least partially unwound to enable the printed matter to be seen.

10. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 5 to 9, wherein the flexible sheet material is adhered to the body with adhesive.

11. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 10, wherein the flexible sheet material is adhered to the body with permanent adhesive.

12. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 2, wherein the first portion of the packaging forms the body of the aerosol delivery device.

13. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 12, wherein the first portion of the packaging is formed from a flexible sheet material.

14. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 13, wherein the flexible sheet material is paper, cardboard or other recyclable material.

15. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claims 13 or 14, wherein the flexible sheet material is spirally wound multiple times to form a multi-layered structure.

16. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 15, wherein the flexible sheet material carries printed matter and can be at least partially unwound to enable the printed matter to be seen.

17. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claims 11 to 16, wherein the first portion of the packaging and the body of the aerosol delivery device are inseparable.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claims 2 to 10, wherein the first portion of the packaging and the body of the aerosol delivery device are configured such that separation of the first portion of the packaging from the body renders the aerosol delivery device inoperable.19- An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 2 to 18, wherein the second portion of the packaging covers the mouthpiece.

20. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 19, comprising a sealing member positioned to seal an open end of the passage in the mouthpiece.

21. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 20, wherein the sealing member is retained in a position in which it seals said open end of the passage in the mouthpiece by the second portion of the packaging.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 21, wherein the sealing member is attached to the second portion of the packaging such that the sealing member is removed to open the passage when the second portion of the packaging is detached from, or is displaced relative to, the first portion of the packaging.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 21, wherein the sealing member is integral with the second portion of the packaging such that the sealing member is removed to open the passage when the second portion of the packaging is detached from, or is displaced relative to, the first portion of the packaging.

24. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 20 to 23, wherein the sealing member comprises a deformable paper plug that extends into the passage.

25. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 20 to 24, wherein the body comprises a vent, and the second portion of the packaging covers the vent.

26. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 25, comprising a vent sealing member positioned to seal the vent..'j. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 26, wherein the vent sealing member is retained in a position in which it seals the vent by the second portion of the packaging.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 27, wherein the vent sealing member is attached to the second portion of the packaging such that the vent sealing member is removed to open the vent when the second portion of the packaging is detached from, or is displaced relative to, the first portion of the packaging.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 27, wherein the vent sealing member is integral with the second portion of the packaging such that the vent sealing member is removed to open the vent when the second portion of the packaging is detached from, or is displaced relative to, the first portion of the packaging.

30. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 26 to 29, wherein the vent sealing member comprises a deformable paper plug that extends into the vent.

31. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 26 to 30, wherein the second portion of the packaging positioned to seal the vent is separate to, or detachable from, the second portion of the packaging positioned to seal the passage in the mouthpiece.

32. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 31, wherein the second portion of the packaging positioned to seal the vent and the second portion of the packaging positioned to seal the passage in the mouthpiece are joined by a line of weakening.

An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any preceding claim, wherein the first and second portions of the packaging are joined by a line of weakening.34- An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 32 or 33, wherein the line of weakening is formed by laser etching so that said line of weakening extends only partially through the thickness of the material of the packaging.

35. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 2 to 34, wherein the first and second portions of the packaging are joined by a tear tape.

36. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any of claims 2 to 35, wherein said second portion of the packaging is re-attachable or repositionable to restrict access to the mouthpiece after the second portion has been removed or displaced.

37. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 36, when dependent on claim 14, wherein the sealing member is repositionable to re-seal the passage.

38. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to claim 36, when dependent on claim 26, wherein the vent sealing member is repositionable to re-seal the vent.

39. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any preceding claim, wherein the second portion of the package is positionable, when it has been removed or displaced to enable the aerosol delivery device to be used for the first time, to support the housing in an upright orientation on a level surface.

40. An aerosol delivery device and packaging according to any preceding claim, wherein said first and second portions together extend about the whole of the housing to hermetically seal the aerosol delivery device within the packaging.
