AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Land-based aquaculture facilities face challenges in effectively treating wastewater, which often results in organic matter and nutrient salts accumulating in water environments, leading to oxygen depletion and harmful effects on local ecosystems.

Method used

A land-based treatment plant with a two-stage system: sedimentation and energy recovery, where a cleaning basin with a flow rectifier directs low-velocity water flow into a sedimentation chamber, allowing particulate waste to settle and be collected, followed by energy recovery through Kaplan turbines.

Benefits of technology

The system achieves high purification efficiency, separating water into two levels of purity, and allows for the collection and reuse of organic waste, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

Abstract

Land-based treatment plant (10) for purifying wastewater from aquaculture facilities, comprising a cleaning basin (12) with inlet (14) for wastewater from one or more aquaculture facilities and outlet (16) for discharge of purified water. The cleaning basin (12) comprises a flow rectifier (24) located downstream of said inlet (14) for waste water, which flow rectifier (24) is adapted to unidirect a low-speed water flow into a sedimentation chamber (18) in the cleaning basin (12), and that a bottom (18a) in the sedimentation chamber (18) comprises filter orifices (28), as particles, related to their sinking speed, fall towards the bottom (18a) and are drawn towards the filter orifices (28), whereupon sludge / sludgy water is collected in an underlying collection chute (30) connected to a sedimentation tank (32) arranged for receiving said sludge / sludgy water.
