Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed herein associated with avatar mesh and avatar building and rendering. In examples, a device associated with avatar building and rendering may receive avatar data associated with an avatar. An avatar mesh may be generated using the avatar data. The device may determine that the avatar data includes a canonical pose property. In examples, the canonical pose property may include at least one of: a definition of coordinates, an orientation, a rotation direction, a forward axis, a bottom-up axis, a right axis, feet level, and an avatar state. An avatar pose associated with the avatar may be modified using the avatar mesh and the canonical pose property. In examples, the modification of the avatar pose may be related to least one of: a placement of the avatar, an orientation of the avatar, or a gaze of the avatar.
