[0031] The following detailed description describes embodiments of massage pads and back braces and methods, some of which are illustrated in the figures. These embodiments are not intended to be limiting, and various modifications, variations, combinations, etc., of the features of these embodiments are possible and within the scope of this disclosure.

[0032] In some embodiments, the back braces described herein provide stabilization, support, bracing, and / or pain relief for the back. The back braces may include a massage pad with dynamic structures that are movable to provide a massaging action when worn by a user. When the belt is worn by a user, the dynamic structures are protrusions extending from the belt towards the user, and are configured to move in a proximal (towardsthe user) and a distal direction (away from the user) while the belt is worn. For ease of reference, these structures / protrusions are referred to herein as “dynamic pimples” or simply “pimples.” An example of an embodiment of a dynamic pimple is illustrated in Figure 3A. A plurality of dynamic pimples can be arranged on a rigid, or semi-rigid structure that is attached to the belt. Various arrangements of the dynamic pimples on a massage pad can facilitate treating different conditions. For example, conditions that the massage pads can help may include, but are not limited to, spondylolisthesis, muscle sprains, lumbar spinal cord spinal stenosis, and / or discomfort in the back. In some embodiments, the operating principles of the massage pads for this back brace may include applying massage therapy to an affected area of the back. The massage pads, which can be used in the back and lumbar area, can prevent poor posture and strengthen the muscles. The massage pads and back braces can be used for acute care in case of malpositions, tensions and blockages. The massage pads and back braces can also be used preventively. This can prevent pain in the lumbar spine from occurring in the first place. The massage pads and back braces can also be used postoperatively, after surgery or for prophylaxis. The massage pads can cause reduction of pain on movement in the sacroiliac joints, targeted massage of pain points and acceleration of the healing process, and stabilization of the iliosacral joints and the pelvis through the combination of elastic and non-elastic materials.

[0033] In some embodiments, the massage pad may be coupled to a flexible textile substrate for the back bracing system. The massage pad may include a rigid body (a “first layer”) coupled to an elastic or semi-rigid body (a “second layer”). The first layer is positioned distal to a patient when the massage pad is worn by the patient, and the second layer is positioned distal to the patient when the massage pad is worn by the patient. The second layer may be referred coupled to the first layer by an overmold process, an adhesive, or the like. For ease or reference, second layer maybe referred to herein as the “overmold body.” The overmold body can be an elastic body, or a semi-rigid body overmolded onto the rigid body. The overmold body can be a proximal layer having protrusions, for example protrusions that are movable with respect to the rigid body. The overmold body can be coupled to the rigid body by adhesive, an overmolding process, or other means. The overmold body can be made of plastic. The flexible textile substrate may have one or more elastic members which may extend through one or more openings of the massage pad to securely fix the rigid body or overmoldbody to the flexible textile substrate. The rigid body may be configured to support the overmold body. The overmold body may include pimples, or raised portions, that are configured to contact the back of a patient. The overmold body may be positioned or molded on the front of the rigid body. At least some pimples of the overmold body can be positioned over cavities of the rigid body. The rigid body and the overmold body can have complimentary dimensions such that they align when molded together. For example, the massage pad may have a generally curved triangular profile to help conform to the curvature of the pelvis of a patient. In another example, the massage pad can have a generally curved elongate pentagonal profile to help conform to the curvature of one side of the lower back of a patient. The massage pad can provide a pleasant massage effect that counteracts tension and pain by stimulating the blood circulation. At the same time, the massage pads can create counterpressure on the abdomen, which can help the spine to straighten up. The warming effect that a back brace has on the affected area can also have a positive effect on the patient.

[0034] In some embodiments, the massage pads disclosed herein may be configured to be patient specific. The massage pads can be coupled to the flexible textile substrate at different points along the horizontal axis to account for patients of different sizes. The massage pads may provide additional stability to the back or spinal column of the patient. Additionally, the flexible textile substrate and the massage pads can come in multiple sizes to fit patients or users of various heights. In some embodiments, due to the flexible textile material, the back bracing system can be comfortably placed over the clothes of a wearer, even if the wearer is not in athletic clothing. The flexible textile material can, in some embodiments, provide compression and reinforce the support / bracing systems of the components to improve spinal function and relieve pain of the wearer.

[0035] Embodiments of a massage pad with dynamic pimples are described herein. The following is a list of certain components that are described and enumerated in this disclosure in reference to the above-listed figures. Other components, or aspects of these components, may not be included in the list but are disclosed in the figures and description. [0036] FIG. 1A illustrates a front view of an embodiment of a massage pad 100. FIG. 1B illustrates a rear view of the embodiment of the massage pad 100 of FIG. 1A. FIG. 1C illustrates a front perspective view of the embodiment of the massage pad 100 of FIG. 1A. FIG.1D illustrates a front perspective view of the embodiment of the massage pad 100 of FIG. 1A. FIG. 1E illustrates a rear perspective view of the embodiment of the massage pad 100 of FIG. 1A. FIG. 1F illustrates a side view of the embodiment of the massage pad 100 of FIG. 1A.

[0037] The massage pad 100 can be a sacral massage pad, or a massage pad for use near the pelvis, in the back or lumbar area. In some embodiments, the massage pad 100 can be shaped like an arrowhead, or a pentagon in which the two top 160 edges are longer than the three bottom 162 edges. The massage pad 100 can have curvilinear edges and curved corners. The massage pad can be structured in other shapes as well, for example, based on where the massage pad will be used on a user’s body. The massage pad 100 can be a pelotte. The second layer may be referred coupled to the first layer by an overmold process, an adhesive, or the like, and thus may generally be referred to herein as the “overmold body” as mentioned above. As illustrated in the example, in FIG. 1A, the massage pad 100 includes an overmold body 110 coupled to a rigid body 120. The overmold body 110 can include pimples 112, 114, or portions extending proximally from a proximal surface 119 the overmold body 110. The massage pad can have a top 160 and a bottom 162. The massage pad can have a proximal side 164 facing the patient and a distal side 166 facing away from the patient.

[0038] Dynamic pimples 112 can be positioned over a partial aperture (e.g., an indentation extending away from the pimple) or a complete cavity 122 that allows the dynamic pimple to move in a proximal and distal direction with relative to the rigid body 120. For ease of reference, each partial or complete aperture / hole is referred to herein as a cavity 122 for ease of reference. As the massage pad 100 is compressed, for example between a back brace and the back of a patient, the dynamic pimples 112 can move with respect to the cavities 122.Movement of the dynamic pimples 112 with respect to the cavities 122 can be caused by movement of the patient. The dynamic pimples 112 can have a spring effect when compressed due to their elastic properties and the way in which the dynamic pimple 112 is moveable when compressed by a back brace. This movement of the dynamic pimples 112 can increase the massage effect of the massage pad 100. The dynamic pimples 112 can stimulate more of the back muscle than unmoving or static pimples, leading to a quicker recovery for muscle problems. A side profile of an example of a dynamic pimple with the overmold body coupled to the rigid body can be seen in FIG.3A.

[0039] The massage pad 100 can include six dynamic pimples 112. In some embodiments, the massage pad can include 1-20 dynamic pimples. The dynamic pimples 112 can be larger than the static pimples 114. The dynamic pimples 112 can be positioned on the lower half of the massage pad 100. The dynamic pimples 112 can be arranged diagonally along lower edges of the massage pad 100. The dynamic pimples 112 can be symmetrical.

[0040] Static pimples 114 can be positioned over a flat surface of the rigid body 120. The static pimples 114 can remain stationary with respect to the rigid body 120 when compressed.

[0041] The massage pad 100 can include 18 static pimples. In some embodiments, massage pad can lack static pimples. In some embodiments, massage pad can have 1-40 static pimples. [0042] The pimples 112, 114 can have varying diameters. The dynamic pimples 112 can have larger diameters than the static pimples 112. The pimples 112, 114 can be arranged such that they contact various points along a back muscle or various back muscles.

[0043] A distal portion of the dynamic pimple 112 of the overmold body 110 can extend through the cavity 122 of the rigid body 120. The cavities 122 can be a circular aperture. The distal portions of the dynamic pimples 112 can include bumps. The cavities 122 can be carved into the rigid body 120.

[0044] The massage pad 100 can include apertures 116 in the overmold body 110. The apertures 116 can improve breathability of the massage pad 100. The massage pad 100 can include apertures 116 near the top 160 and bottom 162 of the massage pad 100. The apertures 116 near the top 160 and bottom 162 can be rounded diamond shapes with an elongated end pointing toward the center of the massage pad. The massage pad 100 can include apertures 116 near the sides of the massage pad 100. The apertures 116 near the sides can be curved, elongated triangles. In some embodiments, the apertures can be other shapes, such as squares, rectangles, circles, ovals, or diamonds. The apertures 116 can provide for air circulation to a region that would otherwise be covered by the massage pad 100 (i.e., breathability). The apertures 116 can also decrease the weight of the massage pad and allow it to be made with less material.

[0045] The apertures 116 can be surrounded by a shallow portion of the massage pad. The rigid body 120 of the massage pad 100 can have apertures 126. The apertures 126 of the rigid body 120 can have any or all of the features of the apertures 116 of the overmold body 110. The apertures 126 of the rigid body 120 can align with the apertures 116 of the overmold body 110 when the rigid body 120 and the overmold body 110 are coupled. The massage pad can include four apertures 116 and four apertures 126. In some embodiments, the massage pad can include 1-10 apertures on the rigid body. In some embodiments, the massage pad can include 1-10 apertures on the overmold body. In some embodiments, the massage pad can lack apertures.

[0046] The massage pad 100 can include a plurality of dimples 118 on the proximal surface 119. The dimples 118 can maintain the massage pad 100 during the molding process. The dimples 118 can be shallow indentations in the surface of the overmold body 110 that extend to the distal side of the massage pad 100. The dimples 118 can be circles. In some embodiments, the dimples can be other shapes, such as squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals, or diamonds. The massage pad 100 can have 30 dimples. In some embodiments, the massage pad can have 10-50 dimples. In some embodiments, the massage pad can have 1-60 dimples. In some embodiments, the massage pad can lack dimples. The rigid body 120 of the massage pad 100 can have dimples 128. The dimples 128 of the rigid body can have any or all of the features of the dimples 118 of the overmold body 110. The dimples 128 of the rigid body 120 can alignwith the dimples 118 of the overmold body 110 when the rigid body 120 and the overmold body 110 are coupled.

[0047] The massage pad 100 can be coupled to a flexible textile substrate of a back brace as illustrated in the example in FIG. 5. The rigid body 120 can be made of hard plastic, metal, rubber, or polymer. The overmold body 110 can be made of soft plastic, elastomer, rubber, silicone, or a polymer.
