AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current CSI reporting methods for Multiple Transmission and Reception Point (MTRP) operations in wireless communication systems are inadequate for network energy saving (NES) as they cannot efficiently configure and report channel state information (CSI) for multiple resource groups or sets, leading to insufficient support for non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) and dynamic point selection (DPS) schemes.

Method used

The proposed method enables the configuration, transmission, measurement, and reporting of CSI-RS resources configured as channel measurement resources (CMR) for a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with multiple resource groups or multiple CSI-RS resource sets, allowing for enhanced CSI reporting capabilities that support NCJT and DPS schemes.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for effective CSI reporting in MTRP scenarios, enabling better network energy saving by supporting multiple resource groups or sets, and improving the efficiency of NCJT and DPS schemes.

Abstract

Methods and devices enable configuring, transmitting, measuring, and reporting measurements for CSI-RS resources configured as channel measurement resource (CMR) for either (or both) of: a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets. The network entity (NE) transmits, and a UE receives, a channel state information (CSI) report configuration including at least one CSI sub-configuration and at least one CMR that are adapted to support CSI reporting using a CSI-RS resource set with a plurality of resource groups for non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) or a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets for dynamic point selection (DPS). For example, each CSI sub-configuration may configure one or more port subset indicators, and / or one or more CSI-RS resource subset indicators, and / or one or more additional power offset indicators.

Description

METHOD FOR CONTROL SIGNALING FOR CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION REPORT FOR NETWORK ENERGY SAVING

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] This document generally describes methods and devices operating in wireless communication systems such as (but not limited to) the ones described in 5G standard documents, known as 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) communication systems.BACKGROUND

[0003] For a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system, the channel state information (CSI) can provide key information for a network entity to select the digital precoder for a user equipment (UE) . Usually, the network entity (NE) can configure a CSI report by radio resource control (RRC) signaling (e.g., CSI-ReportConfig) , where the channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) is used as a channel measurement resource (CMR) for the UE to measure the downlink channel. Additionally, the NE may configure an interference measurement resource (IMR) for the UE to measure interference.

[0004] Based on the configured associated CMR and IMR, the UE is able to identify the CSI, which may include at least one of: rank indicator (RI) , precoder matrix indicator (PMI) , channel quality indicator (CQI) , or layer indicator (LI) . RI and PMI are used to indicate the digital precoder, CQI is used to indicate the signal-to-interference plus noise (SINR) status to assist the network entity in determining the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , and LI is used to identify the strongest layer for the reported precoder indicated by RI and PMI.

[0005] For multiple transmission and reception point (mTRP) operation, the NE may configure the UE to report the CSI based on non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) , where the UE assumes the NE transmits the Physical Data Shared Channel (PDSCH) from more than one TRP without cross-TRP antenna combining. The NE  configures the CSI for NCJT by configuring multiple G (e.g., G=2) resource groups for the CSI-RS resource set configured as CMR, where different resource groups are for different TRPs.

[0006] In addition, for mTRP operation, the NE may transmit the PDSCH based on the dynamic point selection (DPS) scheme, where the NE transmits the PDSCH from one of the TRPs dynamically. The NE may configure more than aperiodic CSI-RS resource sets configured as CMR and indicate the corresponding CSI-RS resource set configured as CMR dynamically using the downlink control information (DCI) to trigger the aperiodic CSI report. The NE can also indicate the IMR set dynamically by the same DCI. In one example, in the DCI, the NE can indicate a CSI triggering state by the field “CSI request” , different values of the DCI field corresponding to different RRC parameters for aperiodic CSI triggering states. In each CSI triggering state, the NE can configure a CSI-RS resource set index for channel measurement and, optionally, configure a CSI-RS resource set index for interference measurement and / or a CSI-IM set index for interference measurement.

[0007] The NE can trigger the UE to provide multiple CSI reports corresponding to multiple CSI report configurations by Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) or long physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , e.g., PUCCH with more than 4 symbols. The UE may report the RI and the CQI for the first codeword by CSI part 1, and report the PMI, LI, and CQI for the second codeword by the CSI part 2. The payload size for the PMI, LI, and CQI for the second codeword in CSI part 2 is determined based on the reported RI in CSI part 1. The UE transmits the CSI part 1 and CSI part 2 by different resource elements on PUSCH or long PUCCH.

[0008] For network energy saving (NES) , the NE may configure L (e.g., L>1) CSI sub-configurations in a CSI report configuration, and the NE can trigger the UE to report N (e.g., 1≤N≤L) CSI sub-reports corresponding to N CSI sub-configurations. For spatial-domain network energy saving (SD-NES) , the NE may configure the CSI report configuration based on one of the following types (Type 1 and Type 2) . Current CSI reports for NES can only configure one port subset indicator for Type1 SD-NES or one CSI resource subset indicator for Type2 SD-NES. However, for mTRP CSI reports, the  NE may need to configure more than one resource group for non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) or more than one CSI-RS resource set for dynamic point selection (DPS) . Additionally, the NE may transmit the CSI-RS from different TRPs based on a different number of antenna ports.

[0009] In this case, one port subset indicator is not sufficient to indicate different port subsets for different TRPs for SD-NES for mTRP CSI. Similarly, one CSI resource subset indicator is not sufficient to select different CSI-RS resource groups or CSI-RS resource sets for different TRPs. Further, different TRPs may apply different power offsets, therefore only one additional power offset cannot indicate different power offsets for different TRPs to support the TRP-specific power domain network energy saving (PD-NES) .

[0010] Accordingly, it would be desirable to provide methods and systems that overcome the drawbacks associated with conventional CSI reporting when considering mTRP NES.SUMMARY

[0011] To overcome the above-described problems, methods and systems according to embodiments enable configuring, transmitting, measuring, and reporting measurements for CSI-RS resources configured as CMR for either (or both) of: a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets. The network entity (NE) transmits, and a UE receives, a channel state information (CSI) report configuration including at least one CSI sub-configuration and at least one channel measurement resource (CMR) that are adapted to support CSI reporting using a CSI-RS resource set with a plurality of resource groups for non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) or a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets for dynamic point selection (DPS) . For example, each CSI sub-configuration may configure one or more port subset indicators, and / or one or more CSI-RS resource subset indicators, and / or one or more additional power offset indicators.

[0012] In this way, CSI reporting is possible for a situation where an NE transmits, for example, the CSI-RS from different TRPs using a different number of antenna ports. In some cases, e.g., depending upon a UE’s capabilities (either  signaled to the NE by the UE or otherwise determined by the NE) , an NE may refrain from configuring a UE with CSI report sub-configurations including plural port subset indicators, and / or plural CSI-RS resource subset indicators, and / or plural additional power offsets.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0023] Methods and systems according to embodiments enable configuring, transmitting, measuring, and reporting measurements for CSI-RS resources configured as CMR for either (or both) of: a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets.

[0024] As discussed in more detail below, a UE, sometimes in collaboration with an NE of a RAN, uses the techniques described in this section for preparing a modified CSI report based on a CSI report configuration including multiple CSI sub-configurations having parameters that enable the CSI report to report information regarding CMRs associated with more than one resource group for non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) or more than one CSI-RS resource set for dynamic point selection (DPS) . Note that in one embodiment, a “CSI report” is the actual feedback provided by the UE about the channel conditions, while “CSI report configuration” encompasses the settings and parameters that define how CSI reports are generated and sent. CSI report configuration allows the NE to control the reporting strategy to meet various communication needs and network optimization goals. Plural CSI report configurations may be used in the same system, and these configurations form a “CSI report scheme. ”

[0025] Figure 1 is a signaling diagram illustrating a procedure for multiple transmission and reception point (mTRP) CSI reporting for NES between an NE and a UE  according to an embodiment when the CSI report configuration includes one or more CSI sub-configurations that support mTRP NES as discussed above. UE 110 may optionally report 102, a UE capability indicating the supported configuration for a CSI report for mTRP operation with CSI sub-configuration (s) configured. Note that a dashed line (or box) in the figures indicates an optional step or function. The UE 110 may report at least one of the UE capabilities via signal or message 102: e.g., whether the UE 110 supports more than one resource group for the CSI-RS resources configured for channel measurement for a CSI report configuration with one or more than one sub-configurations, and / or whether the UE 110 supports more than one CSI-RS resource sets configured for channel measurement for a CSI report configuration with one or more than one sub-configurations. UE 110 may report the UE capability for Type1 SD-NES, Type2 SD-NES, and PD-NES separately or jointly. In some implementations, the NE 120 may receive the UE capability from the UE 110 or from a core network entity (e.g., Access and Mobility Management Function, AMF) or another network entity.

[0026] Based on the received UE capabilities, the NE 120 transmits 104 at least one CSI report configuration, the at least one CSI report configuration including at least one CSI sub-configuration and at least one channel measurement resource (CMR) , the at least one CMR including at least one of: (a) a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or (b) a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets. The at least one CSI sub-configuration is used by the UE to configure at least one of the following: one or more port subset indicators, one or more than one CSI-RS resource subset indicators indicating the CSI-RS resources for one or more than one of the configured CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement, and / or one or more additional power offsets.

[0027] The NE 120 may optionally configure one or more than one IMR set. The NE 120 may transmit 104 the first control signaling by RRC signaling, e.g., RRCReconfiguration or CSI-ReportConfig. In some implementations, for semi-persistent CSI report or aperiodic CSI report, the NE 120 may transmit medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) or downlink control information (DCI) for activating or triggering the CSI report for a subset of CSI sub-configuration (s) .

[0028] Then the NE 120 transmits 106 the configured CSI-RS resource group (s) or set (s) for CSI measurement and report by UE 110. After receiving the CSI-RS resource (s) , the UE 110 calculates the CSI based on the received first control signaling and reports 108 the CSI report including one or more than one CSI sub-reports corresponding to the triggered or configured at least one CSI sub-configurations. Embodiments are described below with respect to FIGS. 3-9 for various mechanisms to format the CSI report configuration (s) , CSI sub-configuration (s) , CSI report (s) , and CSI sub-reports. However, before discussing the various scenarios for configuring a UE to support CSI reporting for mTRP NES, a brief description of a wireless communication system 200 that supports the CSI report scheme is provided with regard to FIG. 2.

[0029] In FIG. 2, the wireless communication system 200 includes a UE 110 and a NE 120 (only one of each is shown for simplicity, but one skilled in the art would understand that many such elements may be present) communicating wirelessly through a link 201 and configured to enable network energy savings according to an embodiment. NE 120 may be any base station (BS) , but more generally, the term “network entity” stands for a wireless device with a well-defined network functionality (e.g., BS’s functionality is connecting UEs to the core network including managing communications to and from the UEs) . NE 120 and UE 110 may include additional functions and interfaces omitted from the figure in the interest of brevity. Signaling link 201 generally represents both uplink signals (from the UE to the NE) and downlink signals (from the NE to the UE) .

[0030] NE 120 may provide the functionality of a gNB (i.e., a 5G or 6G base station) . NE 120’s functionality may be distributed across multiple entities (e.g., a central unit, CU, a distributed unit, DU, and a radio unit, RU) . NE 120 includes one or more antennas, an RF front end 221, and a transceiver 222 for communicating with UE 110 and other UEs and NEs. NE 120’s antennas and RF front end 221 can be tuned to one or more frequency bands (e.g., subcarriers) , for example as defined by 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) , 5G new radio (NR) , and 6G communication standards and implemented by transceiver 222.

[0031] NE 120 further includes processor (s) 223 and computer-readable storage media (CRSM) 224. Processor (s) 223 can include single or multiple-core processors,  and CRSM 224 includes any suitable memory / storage except propagating signals. For example, memory / storage can include random-access memory (RAM) , static RAM (SRAM) , dynamic RAM (DRAM) , non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) , read-only memory (ROM) , and / or flash memory. CRSM 224 stores device data 225, which includes network scheduling data, radio resource management data, applications, and / or an operating system, which are executable by processor (s) 223 to enable wireless communication 201 with UE 110 as well as with other NEs and UEs.

[0032] CRSM 224 also stores a CSI configuration manager 226 and CSI report scheme manager 227. CSI configuration manager 226 causes UE 110 to configure the CSI report based on various factors, which are discussed later. Due to the availability of the CSI sub-configurations for a given CSI report configuration, and that the UE can be instructed to perform CSI reporting for mTRP NES (using either NCJT or DPS) , CSI report schemes are implemented in these embodiments for addressing these conditions. The CSI report scheme is managed by the CSI scheme manager 227 and includes plural CSI report configurations. CSI scheme manager 227, based on prior communications with the UE, determines which CSI report (or modified report) is received by the NE from the UE. In one application, the CSI scheme manager 227 may instruct the UE to use one or more of the available CSI report configurations.

[0033] NE 120 also includes an inter-base station interface 228 and core-network interface 229. Inter-base station interface 228 can be a standardized interface, such as an Xn and / or X2 interface, for exchanging user-plane and control-plane data with another NE (e.g., in case of a handover) . Core-network interface 229 enables NE’s user-plane data and control-plane information exchange with core network functions and / or entities.

[0034] UE 110 may be any user computing device, for example, a smartphone. UE includes antennas connected to a radio frequency (RF) front end 211, and a transceiver. The transceiver may be an LTE transceiver 212, a 5G NR transceiver 213, or another transceiver 214. Although FIG. 2 shows all three transceivers present in the UE, one skilled in the art would understand that more or fewer of these transceivers may be present. The antennas and RF front end 211 can be tuned to one or more frequency bands (e.g., subcarriers) , for example, as defined by 3GPP LTE, 5G NR, and  6G communication standards and implemented by respective transceivers. UE 110 also includes one or more precoders 215, one or more processor (s) 216, and computer-readable storage media (CRSM) 217. Processor (s) 216 may be single or multiple-core processors, and CRSM 217 includes any suitable memory / storage other than propagating signals. For example, memory / storage can include RAM, SRAM, DRAM, NVRAM, ROM, and / or flash memory. CRSM 217 stores device data 218 necessary for UE’s communications. The CRSM 217 may also include a CSI configuration manager 219.

[0035] CSI configuration manager 219 is configured to generate a CSI report, which may include information related to a subset of the CSI sub-configurations, and no information about the remaining CSI sub-configurations. In this or another embodiment, the CSI configuration manager 219 may generate the CSI report to include the latest measured information for the subset of the CSI sub-configurations and outdated information for the remaining CSI sub-configurations. In yet another embodiment, the CSI configuration manager 226 may generate the CSI report to include outdated information for all the CSI sub-configurations. The CSI configuration manager 219 may also be configured to periodically report the CSI, which means that the UE provides updates to the NE 120 at predefined intervals, or it can be reported based on certain events or triggers, such as the specific network event discussed above.

[0036] The 5G NR supports different types of CSI, including wideband CSI, subband CSI, and CQI (Channel Quality Indicator) CSI. Wideband CSI provides information about the overall channel quality across the entire bandwidth, while subband CSI focuses on specific frequency subbands. CQI CSI provides feedback on the expected signal quality. The CSI report may further include various parameters RI, PMI, etc. RI, which may be part of the CSI report, indicates the number of independent data streams that can be supported by a channel. RI helps the NE determine the appropriate MIMO transmission scheme to use. The PMI indicates the optimal precoding matrix to be used for transmission from the NE to the UE. This helps in beamforming and spatial multiplexing to maximize the signal quality.

[0037] Subband CSI reporting is a feature that allows for more granular monitoring of channel conditions across smaller frequency ranges within the total  available bandwidth. The total system bandwidth is divided into smaller subbands or frequency chunks. Subband CSI refers to the configuration and reporting of channel information for each of these subbands. Each subband typically covers a specific frequency range, and CSI sub-configuration defines how the UE should measure and report channel conditions within these subbands. Subband CSI reporting may have or not a periodicity. Subband CSI reporting can be set to occur at different reporting intervals or periodicities. For example, the UE may be configured to provide subband CSI feedback for certain subbands more frequently than others, depending on the network's requirements. The size of each subband, in terms of the number of resource blocks or frequency resources, can vary.

[0038] The CSI sub-configuration may refer, in this or another embodiment, to the specific settings and parameters that determine how the channel state information is measured and reported for subbands within the overall system bandwidth. CSI sub-configuration may specify the size of each subband. CSI feedback for subbands can be reported periodically or based on events. The NE may configure the UE to provide subband CSI updates when significant changes in channel conditions are detected within a particular subband. Subband CSI can influence resource allocation decisions. The NE 120 may use the subband CSI feedback to allocate resources more efficiently, especially when different subbands have varying channel qualities. Thus, the CSI sub-configuration may include, in one embodiment, more than one CSI-RS antenna port sub-set indicator, one or more CSI-RS resource subset indicators, and / or more than one additional power offset indicators for a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) relative to CSI-RS.

[0039] The CSI configuration manager 219 is configured to implement plural CSI configurations, and depending on the existing conditions, selects one CSI configuration from the CSI report scheme and instructs a measurement unit of the UE to measure the information specific to the selected CSI configuration or sub-configuration (s) and instructs the transceiver 213 to supply a CSI report to the NE based on the selected CSI report configuration or CSI report sub-configuration. The various CSI configurations and sub-configurations (and / or CSI report scheme) implemented in the UE and / or the NE according to this embodiment will be discussed later.

[0040] FIG. 3 illustrates the UE behavior 300 for mTRP CSI report for NES according to an embodiment. Optionally, at step 302, the UE 110 transmits a signal or message informing (the NE) about its capabilities with respect to CSI reporting for mTRP operation (with CSI sub-configurations configured) . The UE 110 receives 304 control signaling for configuring at least one CSI report configuration, the at least one CSI report configuration including at least one CSI sub-configuration and at least one channel measurement resource (CMR) , the at least one CMR including at least one of: (a) a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or (b) a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets. The UE 110 receives 306 the configured CSI-RS resource associated with the at least one CMR and, subsequently, transmits 308 the CSI report based on the CSI-RS resource for the triggered or periodic CSI report sub-configurations.

[0041] FIG. 4 illustrates the NE behavior 400 for mTRP CSI report for NES according to an embodiment. Optionally, at step 402, the NE 120 receives a signal or message about UE’s capabilities with respect to CSI reporting for mTRP operation (with CSI sub-configurations configured) . The NE 120 transmits 404 control signaling for configuring CSI report configuration, the at least one CSI report configuration including at least one CSI sub-configuration and at least one channel measurement resource (CMR) , the at least one CMR including at least one of: (a) a CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) resource set with a plurality of resource groups or (b) a plurality of CSI-RS resource sets. The NE 120 transmits 406 the configured CSI-RS resource associated with the at least one CMR and, subsequently, receives 408 the CSI report based on the CSI-RS resource for the triggered or periodic CSI report sub-configurations.

[0042] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a TRP-specific NES parameter configuration with multiple resource groups according to an embodiment. This figure graphically depicts a relationship between a CSI report configuration 540 transmitted by an NE 120 (and received by a UE 110) and a corresponding CSI report 542 transmitted by a UE 110 (and received by an NE 120) . The CSI report configuration 540 according to this embodiment includes an identification of CSI-RS resources in a plurality of groups. In this example, there are two CSI-RS resource groups (e.g., G=2) , i.e., a first CSI-RS resource group 544 having CSI-RS resources 1…K1 and a second CSI-RS resource group 546 having CSI-RS resources K1+1…K1+K2, where values 1... K and K1+1…K1+K2 are identifiers of  specific CSI-RS resources that are configured as CMR. Although this example shows two groups of CSI-RS resources, it will be appreciated that other embodiments can include more than two groups of CSI-RS resources.

[0043] CSI report configuration 540 also includes a plurality of CSI report sub-configurations 1…L, four (548, 550, 552, 554) of which are illustrated in more detail. For example, CSI report sub-configuration 548 includes 2 port subset indicators 556, 2 CSI-RS resource subset indicators 558, and 2 additional power offsets 560 between PDSCH and CSI-RS. Each port subset indicator 556 corresponds to one of the resource groups 544, 546 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively. Each CSI-RS resource subset indicator 558 corresponds to one of the resource groups 544, 546 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively. Each additional power offset 560 corresponds to one of the resource groups 544, 546 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively. Note that, although not shown in FIG. 5 (and subsequent FIGS. 6-9) , each CSI resource listed in the CSI report configuration can also specify a first power offset value.

[0044] In some embodiments, the NE 120 may configure an RRC parameter to configure the G port subset indicators jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the G port subset indicators separately. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure an RRC parameter to configure the G CSI-RS resource subset indicators jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the G CSI-RS resource subset indicators separately. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure a RRC parameter to configure G additional power offsets jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the G additional power offsets separately.

[0045] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI sub-report for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration based on the port subset indicator (s) 556, CSI-RS resource subset indicator (s) 558, and / or additional power offset (s) 560 for the corresponding CSI-RS resource group. For example, the UE 110 calculates and reports CSI sub-report 562 using measurements taken based on the CSI report sub-configuration 548. Similarly, CSI sub-report 564 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 550 and  CSI sub-report 567 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 552. The G port subset indicators 556, G CSI-RS resource subset indicators 558, and / or G additional power offsets 560, and the CSI-RS resource group 544 or 546 are one-to-one associated based on the resource group index.

[0046] In some embodiments, the NE 120 configures the same number of CSI-RS resources for each CSI-RS resource subset. The NE 120 may refrain from configuring a different number of CSI-RS resources for each CSI-RS resource subsets. Thus, UE 110 may expect that the NE 120 will configure the same number of CSI-RS resources for each CSI-RS resource subset. This may be applicable when the NE 120 configures the CSI-RS resource subset indicator 558 in a CSI report sub-configuration. In some other implementations, the UE 110 determines the CSI-RS resource pairs for NCJT CSI based on the minimum number of CSI-RS resources for the G CSI-RS resource subset indicators.

[0047] FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment wherein TRP-specific NES parameters are configured for CSI reporting for multiple resource groups. FIG. 6 illustrates an embodiment wherein common TRP-parameters are specified for CSI reporting for multiple resource groups. Therein, the CSI report configuration 640 according to this embodiment includes an identification of CSI-RS resources in a plurality of groups. In this example, there are two CSI-RS resource groups (e.g., G=2) , i.e., a first CSI-RS resource group 644 having CSI-RS resources 1…K1 and a second CSI-RS resource group 646 having CSI-RS resources K1+1…K1+K2, where values 1... K and K1+1…K1+K2 are identifiers of specific CSI-RS resources that are configured as CMR. Although this example shows two groups of CSI-RS resources, it will be appreciated that other embodiments can include more than two groups of CSI-RS resources.

[0048] CSI report configuration 640 also includes a plurality of CSI report sub-configurations 1…L, four (648, 650, 652, 654) of which are illustrated in more detail. For example, CSI report sub-configuration 648 includes one common port subset indicator 656, one common CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658, and one common additional power offset 660 between PDSCH and CSI-RS. These three parameters 656, 658, and 660 are the same for both resource groups 644 and 646. The common port subset indicator 656 indicates common port subsets for each resource group for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement. The common CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658 indicates  common CSI resource subsets from all the resource groups. The common additional power offset 660 indicates a common additional power offset for each resource group for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement.

[0049] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI sub-report for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration based on the common port subset indicator 656, CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658, and / or additional power offset 660. For example, the UE 110 calculates and reports CSI sub-report 662 using measurements taken based on the CSI report sub-configuration 648. Similarly, CSI sub-report 664 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 650 and CSI sub-report 667 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 652.

[0050] In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure the same number of ports for the G resource groups for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement. The NE 120 may refrain from configuring a different number of ports for the G resource groups for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement. Thus, the UE 110 may expect the NE 120 to configure the same number of ports for the G resource groups for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement. This may be applicable when the NE 120 configures the common port subset indicator 656 in a CSI report sub-configuration.

[0051] In some implementations, the NE 120 configures the same number of CSI-RS resources for G CSI-RS resource groups by the common CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658. The NE 120 may refrain from configuring a different number of CSI-RS resources for G CSI-RS resource groups by the CSI-RS resource subset indicator. Thus, UE 110 may expect the NE 120 s to configure the same number of CSI-RS resources for G CSI-RS resource groups by the common CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658. This may be applicable when the NE 120 configures the common CSI-RS resource subset indicator 658 in a CSI report sub-configuration 648. In some other implementations, the UE 110 determines the CSI-RS resource pairs for NCJT CSI based on the minimum number of CSI-RS resources for the G CSI-RS resource groups from the CSI resource subset.

[0052] The embodiments of FIG. 5 and FIG. 6 show that CSI reporting is supported for multiple CSI-RS resource groups either using only TRP-specific parameters or using only common TRIP parameters. However, according to other embodiments, one or more  of the parameters can be TRP-specific, while one or more other parameters can be TRP-common. For example, in some implementations, the NE 120 configures a CSI report configuration with G (e.g., G=2) resource groups for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations, where each CSI report sub-configurations may configure G sets of the first set parameter (s) and one set of second set of parameter (s) . The first set of parameter (s) may include at least one of port subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, or additional power offset. The second set of parameter (s) may include the parameter (s) other than the parameter (s) in the first set of parameter (s) .

[0053] Constraints on CSI report configurations and sub-configurations can also be considered. For example, in another embodiment the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. Instead, the NE 120 configures a CSI report configuration with only one resource group for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, it configures the CSI report configuration to include one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect to be configured with a CSI report configuration with more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configuration (s) . In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure the CSI report sub-configurations with at least one of the parameters: port subset indicator, CSI resource subset indicator, or additional power offset between PDSCH and CSI-RS.

[0054] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including port subset indicator. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including port subset indicator.

[0055] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including  CSI-RS resource subset indicator. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including CSI-RS resource subset indicator.

[0056] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including additional power offset. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one resource group (e.g., two) for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including additional power offset.

[0057] In other embodiments, discussed below with respect to FIGS. 7-9, the NE 120 configures a CSI report configuration with multiple (e.g., two) CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure the CSI report sub-configurations with at least one of the parameters: port subset indicator (s) , CSI resource subset indicator (s) , or additional power offset (s) between PDSCH and CSI-RS.

[0058] FIG. 7 illustrates an example of a TRP-specific NES parameter configuration with multiple resource sets according to an embodiment. This figure graphically depicts a relationship between a CSI report configuration 740 transmitted by an NE 120 (and received by a UE 110) and a corresponding CSI report 742 transmitted by a UE 110 (and received by an NE 120) . The CSI report configuration 740 according to this embodiment includes an identification of CSI-RS resources in a plurality of sets. In this example, there are two CSI-RS resource sets (e.g., S=2) , i.e., a first CSI-RS resource set 744 having CSI-RS resources 1…K1 and a second CSI-RS resource set 746 having CSI-RS resources x+1…x+K2, where values 1... K and x+1…x+K2 are identifiers of specific CSI-RS resources that are configured as CMR. Although this example shows two sets of CSI-RS resources, it will be appreciated that other embodiments can include more than two sets of CSI-RS resources.

[0059] CSI report configuration 740 also includes a plurality of CSI report sub-configurations 1…L, four (748, 750, 752, 754) of which are illustrated in more detail. For example, CSI report sub-configuration 748 includes 2 port subset indicators 756, 2 CSI-RS  resource subset indicators 758, and 2 additional power offsets 760 between PDSCH and CSI-RS. Each port subset indicator 756 corresponds to one of the resource sets 744, 746 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively. Each CSI-RS resource subset indicator 758 corresponds to one of the resource sets 744, 746 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively. Each additional power offset 760 corresponds to one of the resource sets 744, 746 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement, respectively.

[0060] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI report 742 and corresponding CSI sub-report (s) for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration and a selected one of the two resource sets 744 and 746. In this example, CSI reporting is selected for resource set 746, e.g., as part of the CSI triggering of the CSI report, based on the subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and additional power offset within each parameter set for the selected CSI-RS resource set 746. For example, the UE 110 calculates and reports CSI sub-report 762 using measurements taken based on the CSI report sub-configuration 748 and, more specifically, the parameters within CSI report sub-configuration 748 that correspond to resource set 746. Similarly, CSI sub-report 764 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 750 and CSI sub-report 767 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 752.

[0061] In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure the S CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement when the CSI-RS resource sets are aperiodic CSI-RS. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure an RRC parameter to configure the S port subset indicators jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the S port subset indicators separately. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure an RRC parameter to configure the S CSI-RS resource subset indicators jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the S CSI-RS resource subset indicators separately. In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure an RRC parameter to configure S additional power offsets jointly. In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure separate RRC parameters to configure the S additional power offsets separately.

[0062] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI sub-report for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration based on the subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator and / or additional power offset for the CSI-RS resource set configured by the aperiodic CSI triggering state indicated by the DCI triggering the aperiodic CSI report. The S port subset indicators, S CSI-RS resource subset indicators, and / or S additional power offsets and the CSI-RS resource sets are one-to-one associated based on the resource set index.

[0063] In the embodiment of FIG. 7, each CSI report sub-configuration has a number of port subset indicators, a number of CSI-RS resource indicators, and / or a number of additional power offsets which is the same as the number of CSI-RS resource sets. According to another embodiment, each CSI-RS resource set can be associated with one or more sub-configurations as illustrated in FIG. 8.

[0064] Therein, the CSI report configuration 840 according to this embodiment includes an identification of CSI-RS resources in a plurality of sets. In this example, there are two CSI-RS resource sets (e.g., S=2) , i.e., a first CSI-RS resource set 844 having CSI-RS resources 1…K1 and a second CSI-RS resource set 846 having CSI-RS resources x+1…x+K2, where values 1... K and x+1…x+K2 are identifiers of specific CSI-RS resources that are configured as CMR. Although this example shows two sets of CSI-RS resources, it will be appreciated that other embodiments can include more than two sets of CSI-RS resources.

[0065] CSI report configuration 840 also includes a plurality of CSI report sub-configurations 1…L, four (848, 850, 852, 854) of which are illustrated in more detail. Some of the sub-configurations, e.g., sub-configurations 848 and 850, are associated with the first CSI-RS resource set 844, and other sub-configurations, e.g., sub-configurations 852 and 854, are associated with the second CSI-RS resource set 846. For example, CSI report sub-configurations 848 and 850 each include one port subset indicator, one CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and one additional power offset between PDSCH and CSI-RS. Each port subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and additional power offset in sub-configurations 848 and 850 correspond to the resource set 844 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement.

[0066] Similarly, CSI report sub-configurations 852 and 854 each include one port subset indicator, one CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and one additional power offset between PDSCH and CSI-RS. Each port subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and additional power offset in sub-configurations 852 and 854 correspond to the resource set 846 for the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement.

[0067] More specifically, and according to an embodiment, each sub-configuration includes at least one of the following: an associated CSI-RS resource set index for channel measurement, which indicates one of the configured CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement that the CSI report sub-configuration is associated with; an associated CSI-RS resource set index for interference measurement, which indicates one of the configured CSI-RS resource sets for interference measurement that the CSI report sub-configuration is associated with; an associated CSI-IM resource set index for interference measurement, which indicates one of the configured CSI-IM resource sets for interference measurement that the CSI report sub-configuration is associated with; one port subset indicator, which indicates common port subsets for the associated CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement; one CSI-RS resource subset indicator, which indicates the CSI resource subsets from the associated CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement and / or interference measurement, and one additional power offset, which indicates the additional power offset for the CSI-RS resources for the associated CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement for channel measurement and / or interference measurement.

[0068] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI report 842 and corresponding CSI sub-report (s) for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration and a selected one of the two resource sets 844 and 846. In this example, CSI reporting is selected for resource set 844, e.g., as part of the CSI triggering of the CSI report, based on the subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and additional power offset within each parameter set for the selected CSI-RS resource set 844. For example, the UE 110 calculates and reports CSI sub-report 862 using measurements taken based on the CSI report sub-configuration 848. Similarly, CSI sub-report 864 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 850. Note that sub-configurations 852 and 854 are not used in this example, since they correspond to CSI-RS resource 846 which was not selected for measurement.

[0069] In some implementations, the NE 120 and UE 110 may determine an associated CSI-RS resource set index for channel measurement, an associated CSI-RS resource set index for interference measurement and / or an associated CSI-IM resource set index for interference measurement based on the CSI-RS resource set index for channel measurement (e.g., resourceForChannel) , CSI-RS resource set index for interference measurement (e.g., nzp-CSI-RS-ResourcesForInterference) and / or CSI-IM resource set index for interference measurement (e.g., csi-IM-ResourcesForInterference) configured in the CSI associated report configuration information (e.g., CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo) in CSI triggering state (e.g., CSI-AperiodicTriggerState) . The NE may configure a list of the triggered CSI sub-configuration in the CSI associated report configuration information (e.g., CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo) in CSI triggering state (e.g., CSI-AperiodicTriggerState) , and the NE 120 can trigger the CSI sub-configuration corresponding to a CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement by indicating a particular CSI trigger state in DCI.

[0070] In some other implementations, the NE 120 may configure the CSI report configuration ID (e.g., reportConfigId) in the CSI associated report configuration information (e.g., CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo) in CSI triggering state (e.g., CSI-AperiodicTriggerState) , and the NE and UE determine the triggered CSI sub-configurations as the CSI sub-configurations configured with the same associated CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement as the CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement configured by the CSI-RS resource set index for channel measurement (e.g., resourceForChannel) .

[0071] The embodiments of FIGS. 7 and 8 show TRP-specific parameters for measuring and reporting CSI for mTRP scenarios. However, TRP-common parameters can also be applied. For example, as shown in FIG. 9, an NE 120 configures a CSI report configuration 940 with S (e.g., S=2) CSI-RS resource sets 944 and 946 for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations, 948, 950, 952, and 954 where each sub-configuration includes at least one of the following: one port subset indicator, which indicates common port subsets for all the configured or triggered CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement; one CSI-RS resource subset indicator, which indicates the CSI resource subsets from all the configured or triggered CSI-RS  resource sets; or one additional power offset, which indicates a common additional power offset for all the CSI-RS resources for channel measurement.

[0072] The UE 110 calculates and reports the CSI report 942 and corresponding CSI sub-report (s) 962, 964, and 967 for a configured or triggered CSI sub-configuration and a selected one of the two resource sets 944 and 946. In this example, CSI reporting is selected for resource set 944, e.g., as part of the CSI triggering of the CSI report, based on the subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, and additional power offset within each parameter set for the selected CSI-RS resource set 944. For example, the UE 110 calculates and reports CSI sub-report 962 using measurements taken based on the CSI report sub-configuration 948. Similarly, CSI sub-report 964 corresponds to CSI report sub-configuration 950, and CSI sub-report 967 corresponds to sub-configuration 952.

[0073] In some implementations, the NE 120 may configure the same number of ports for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. The NE 120 may refrain from configuring a different number of ports for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. Thus, the UE 110 may expect the NE 120 to configure the same number of ports for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. This may be applicable when the NE 120 configures the port subset indicator in a CSI report sub-configuration.

[0074] In some implementations, the NE 120 configures the same number of CSI-RS resources for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. The NE 120 may refrain from configuring a different number of CSI-RS resources for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. Thus, UE 110 may expect the NE 120 to configure the same number of CSI-RS resources for the CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement. This may be applicable when the NE 120 configures the CSI-RS resource subset indicator in a CSI report sub-configuration.

[0075] In some other implementations, the UE 110 determines the CSI-RS resource subsets based on the number of CSI-RS resources for the triggered CSI-RS resource set. In one example, the UE 110 may determine the CSI-RS resource subsets as CSI-RS resource z (if (z+1) <=Ks) in the triggered CSI-RS resource set, where z indicates the CSI-RS resource subset IDs indicated by the CSI-RS resource subset indicator and Ks indicates the number of CSI-RS resources in the triggered CSI-RS resource set.

[0076] The embodiments of FIGS. 7-9 show that CSI reporting can be supported for multiple CSI-RS sets either using only TRP-specific parameters or using only common TRP parameters. However, according to other embodiments, one or more of the parameters can be TRP-specific, while one or more other parameters can be TRP-common. For example, in some implementations, the NE 120 configures a CSI report configuration with S (e.g., S=2) CSI-RS resource sets for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations, where each CSI report sub-configurations may configure T sets of the first set parameter (s) and one set of second set of parameter (s) . The first set of parameter (s) may include at least one of port subset indicator, CSI-RS resource subset indicator, or additional power offset. The second set of parameter (s) may include the parameter (s) other than the parameter (s) in the first set of parameter (s) .

[0077] Other embodiments may consider constraints on CSI reporting configuration. For example, in another embodiment, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. The NE configures a CSI report configuration with only one CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement, if it configures the CSI report configuration includes one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect to be configured with a CSI report configuration with more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations. Therefore, the UE 110 may expect to be configured with a CSI report configuration with one CSI-RS resource set for channel measurement, if one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations are configured in the CSI report configuration. In some implementations, the NE may configure the CSI report sub-configurations with at least one of the parameters: port subset indicator, CSI resource subset indicator, or additional power offset between PDSCH and CSI-RS.

[0078] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including port subset indicator. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one  CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including port subset indicator.

[0079] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including CSI-RS resource subset indicator. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including CSI-RS resource subset indicator.

[0080] In some implementations, the NE 120 refrains from configuring a CSI report configuration with more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including additional power offset. Thus, the UE 110 may not expect the NE 120 to configure more than one CSI-RS resource set (e.g., two) for channel measurement, and one or more than one CSI report sub-configurations including additional power offset.

[0081] By way of example, and not limitation, the techniques described in this document support the following embodiments.

[0084] Example 3 --The method according to Example 1, wherein each CSI sub-configuration includes a set of parameters, the set of parameters including at least one of: at least one port subset indicator, at least one CSI-RS resource subset indicator, or at least one additional power offset.

[0085] Example 4 --The method according to Example 3, wherein each set of parameters is associated with at least one of: each resource group of the plurality of resource groups; or each CSI-RS resource set of the plurality of CSI-RS resource sets.

[0086] Example 5 –The method according to Examples 3 or 4, further comprising: receiving, by the UE, a configuration of an association between each set of parameters and the at least one of each resource group or each CSI-RS resource set; wherein the association is based on at least one of: a resource group index, a CSI-RS resource set index, a parameter set index, a CSI sub-configuration identifier (ID) comprising the set of parameters, or a triggered CSI sub-configuration ID.

[0087] Example 6 --The method according to Examples 3-5, further comprising: receiving, by the UE, a downlink control information triggering the at least one CSI sub-configuration for the CSI report.

[0088] Example 7 --The method according to Examples 3-6, wherein the set of parameters is based on a common set of parameters for the plurality of resource groups or the plurality of CSI-RS resource sets.
