Abstract
The need for environmental comfort in buildings of all types, and the need for energy savings and efficiency in general, are directly related to insulation. However, in the Mediterranean climate, insulation can be detrimental when, due to geographical orientation, seasonal variations in climate, or even time of day, it can actually be harmful. A vacuum is a perfect insulator against two modes of heat transmission, namely conduction and convection, only allowing transmission by radiation, which is also reduced in the case of solid surfaces. The modular solution using tiles allows for the improvement of the existing building without construction work and, by allowing for a void inside, will drastically reduce thermal transmission in either direction. Maintaining a vacuum with non-metallic materials is not possible due to their permeability, so it must be renewed using a vacuum pump. This allows the system to operate according to the insulation demand, based on criteria determined in each case. Essentially, by working with existing materials, this patented system is part of the circular economy and complies with DNSH principles.
