Abstract

Process for biochar regeneration by desorption and electrochemical treatment with reuse of the regenerating solution. Biochar is a low-cost carbonaceous adsorbent effective in removing emerging contaminants, particularly antibiotics. The main drawback to its practical application arises when the adsorbent becomes saturated. Although various regeneration methods have been described, there remains a need for a process that restores adsorption capacity, destroys the contaminant, and does not generate additional liquid waste. The biochar regeneration process of the invention combines alkaline chemical desorption in a separate reactor with ex situ electrochemical treatment of the eluate, reuse of the alkaline regenerant in a closed loop, and acid conditioning of the biochar. The process is efficient and sustainable and, by decoupling desorption and oxidation, allows for the independent optimization and scale-up of each stage, as well as overlapping the biochar conditioning with the eluate treatment.
