Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to an emulsion paint, a process for producing the emulsion paint, the use of the emulsion paint and the use of alkanolamine for stabilizing emulsion paints.
[0002] Various coating materials are available for coating substrates. In addition to silicate paints, there are also silicate dispersion paints and plastic dispersion paints.
[0003] Silicate paints are two-component paints that contain no organic components. The two main components of silicate paints are water glass and a water glass-resistant pigment. Silicate paints are usually mixed immediately before application by combining the two main components. Therefore, silicate paints require several steps, and their application is generally difficult and requires considerable experience.
[0004] In addition to the water glass and the water glass-resistant pigment, dispersion silicate paints according to DIN 18363 contain up to 5% by weight of organic components, based on the total amount of dispersion silicate paint. Synthetic resin dispersions are primarily used as organic components. Additional substances such as water repellents may also be included. The use of synthetic resin dispersions makes it possible to offer dispersion silicate paints as one-component systems.
[0005] Both silicate paints and dispersion silicate paints typically have a very strong alkaline pH value of up to 13, which requires more complex occupational safety precautions.
[0006] Plastic emulsion paints, also known as dispersion paints, typically contain relatively large amounts of organic chemical components, particularly synthetic resins such as polymers, especially in the form of synthetic resin dispersions. To ensure sufficient storage stability, emulsion paints typically require preservatives, particularly biocides such as isothiazolines. However, these can cause skin irritation, especially in allergy sufferers.
[0007] Various options have been proposed to produce plastic emulsion paints that do not require preservatives. These options are based primarily on water glass and alkyl siliconates.
[0008] EP 1 297 079 B1 describes an emulsion paint containing a polymer dispersion, pigment and / or filler, water glass, and water. This emulsion paint is characterized by the fact that it does not require preservatives. However, the presence of water glass also contains an inorganic binder, which can impair the properties of the emulsion paint, particularly its processability.
[0009] DE 1 031 910 B describes an alkyd resin emulsion paint containing titanium dioxide, fillers, an alkyd resin, and water. Sodium methylsiliconate is added to this paint immediately before application, giving the modified paint better washability than alkyd resin emulsion paints without sodium methylsiliconate. DE 1 031 910 B makes no statement about the pH value of the alkyd resin emulsion paint, its storage stability, or the presence of preservatives. Furthermore, an alkyd resin emulsion paint containing sodium methylsiliconate is not intended for storage according to DE 1 031 910 B.
[0010] DE 10 2014 013 455 A1 and DE 10 2016 002 221 A1 each describe an emulsion paint containing a polymer, pigment, filler, alkyl siliconate, and water. Both documents describe that the emulsion paint has an alkaline pH of a maximum of 12. Neither of the aforementioned documents describes that the emulsion paint can be stabilized by using an alkanolamine. A disadvantage of the emulsion paints containing alkyl siliconate described above is that yellowing can occur with some unsuitable polymers and titanium dioxide variants. Another disadvantage in the colored range can be the formation of white potassium carbonate, which can be formed by reaction with carbon dioxide. In addition, alkyl siliconates are relatively expensive.
[0011] Furthermore, the use of N-alkylalkanolamines and / or N,N-dialkylalkanolamines as synergists in combination with a biocide for stabilizing latex compositions is known from EP 1 362 897 A2. However, EP 1 362 897 A2 does not describe latex compositions containing N-alkylalkanolamines and / or N,N-dialkylalkanolamines without a biocide.
[0012] Based on the prior art explained above, it was an object of the invention to provide an emulsion paint which is substantially free of preservatives, has good storage stability and / or is easy to process.
[0013] All or some of these objects are achieved according to the invention by the emulsion paint according to point 1, the process according to point 12, the use according to point 14 and the use according to point 15.
[0014] Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent points and are explained in detail below.
[0015] The emulsion paint according to the invention has a pH value of 10 to 12 and contains, based on the total weight of the emulsion paint, the following components: a. 0 to 25 wt.% pigment, b. 20 to 50 wt.% filler, c. 1 to 25 wt.% polymer, d. 0.01 to 5 wt.% alkanolamine, e. 25 to 70 wt.% water.
[0016] Surprisingly, it has been found that by combining 0 to 25% by weight of pigment with 20 to 50% by weight of filler, 1 to 25% by weight of polymer, 0.01 to 5% by weight of alkanolamine, and 25 to 70% by weight of water in an emulsion paint having a pH of 10 to 12, an emulsion paint is obtained in which the components exhibit excellent compatibility with one another. As a result, surfaces coated with the emulsion paint according to the invention have a more homogeneous appearance. This is particularly evident in the fact that the surfaces coated with the emulsion paint according to the invention appear very uniform and have good leveling. As a result, the emulsion paint according to the invention is outstandingly easy to process and has a long open time. Furthermore, it has been found that the emulsion paint according to the invention does not exhibit any discoloration even after a storage period of several weeks, even without preservatives. Finally, it was found that the pH value of the emulsion paint according to the invention remained essentially constant over a storage period of several weeks.
[0017] Without wishing to be bound to any particular theory, the alkanolamine appears to stabilize the emulsion paint, particularly its pH, and also to ensure good compatibility between the components. Unlike preservative-free emulsion paints known in the prior art, the emulsion paint according to the invention dispenses with the inorganic components water glass or siliconate, which appears to improve compatibility between the components at the emulsion paint's pH.
[0018] The alkanolamine appears to act as a pH buffer in the emulsion paint according to the invention. As a result, the alkanolamine appears to improve the storage stability of the emulsion paint. This effect was unforeseeable given the use of alkanolamines as synergists for biocides, as described in EP 1 362 897 A2.
[0019] Dispersion paints within the meaning of the invention include, in particular, interior dispersion paints, exterior dispersion paints, silicone resin paints, and dispersion-based plasters and building varnishes, including interior and exterior plasters.
[0020] The alkanolamine is present in the emulsion paint according to the invention in an amount of 0.01 to 5 wt.%, based on the total weight of the emulsion paint. The emulsion paint according to the invention preferably contains 0.05 to 3 wt.%, in particular 0.1 to 1.5 wt.%, of alkanolamine, based in each case on the total weight of the emulsion paint. Emulsion paints with these contents exhibit good processability and good storage stability.

Methods for determining particle size are known to those skilled in the art. For example, the particle size can be determined using a grindometer in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1524, in particular DIN EN ISO 1524:2013-06. The particle size of the fillers refers in particular to the maximum agglomerate size in the emulsion paint. Furthermore, the particle size, in particular the particle size distribution, can also be determined using transmission electron microscopy. The particle size is preferably determined using a grindometer according to DIN EN ISO 1524:2013-06
[0047] According to the invention, the pH value of the emulsion paint is from 10 to 12, preferably from 10.5 to 11.5. It has been found that emulsion paints with the specified pH values exhibit little or no changes even when stored for several weeks, even when essentially free of preservatives. "Essentially free of preservatives" means that the emulsion paint contains preservatives at most in trace amounts, in particular in an amount of less than 2 ppm. Even more preferably, the pH value of the emulsion paint is from 10.5 to 11.4. Emulsion paints according to the invention with such pH values have the additional advantage of being able to be used without special precautions regarding occupational safety.
[0048] The pH value can be adjusted more precisely, for example, by adding alkaline substances, also called alkali adjusters. Examples of alkaline substances are alkali metal hydroxides such as lithium, sodium, and / or potassium hydroxide; alkaline earth metal hydroxides such as magnesium, calcium, and / or barium hydroxide; ammonium hydroxide; xonotlite (6CaO·6SiO 2 ·H 2 O); and / or ettringite (Ca 6 [Al(OH) 6 ] 2 (SO 4 x 26 H 2 O)). The alkali adjuster is preferably an alkali metal hydroxide, in particular potassium hydroxide.
[0049] The xonotlite preferably has a monoclinic crystal system (xonotlite monoclinic). "Essentially constant" means that the measured pH value does not change within the usual measurement tolerance range for pH measurements.
[0052] According to the invention, the emulsion paint contains 1 to 25 wt.% polymer, based on the total weight of the emulsion paint. Preferably, the emulsion paint contains 1 to 20 wt.%, more preferably 5 to 15 wt.% polymer, based in each case on the total weight of the emulsion paint. The information regarding the polymer content in the emulsion paint refers to the polymer as a solids content. However, the polymer is preferably added in the form of a dispersion, especially an aqueous dispersion, during the production of an emulsion paint.
[0053] These polymer dispersions, especially the aqueous polymer dispersions, advantageously contain 40 to 70 wt. %, preferably 45 to 60 wt. %, more preferably 45 to 55 wt. %, of polymer. If the polymer is added as an aqueous polymer dispersion, the water in the polymer dispersion is counted as part of the total water content of the emulsion paint. Emulsion paints containing polymer in the stated amounts have demonstrated good processing properties.
[0054] Various polymers are suitable as the polymer of the emulsion paint. The polymer of the emulsion paint according to the invention preferably contains at least one polymer and / or copolymer based on at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acrylic acid derivatives, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid, methacrylic acid derivatives, methacrylic acid esters, styrene, styrene derivatives, N-vinylpyrrolidone, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydrides, ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid amides, and vinyl carboxylic acid esters. More preferably, the polymer of the emulsion paint contains at least one polymer based on acrylic acid derivatives and / or styrene, particularly preferably a styrene-acrylate copolymer. Preferred acrylic acid derivatives are acrylic acid esters. [0056] Examples of defoamers are polyglycols, triglycerides, polysiloxane-polyether copolymers and silicone oils.
[0057] Examples of hydrophobic agents include oligomeric and polymeric siloxanes and silicone resins.
[0058] According to a preferred embodiment, the emulsion paint according to the invention is essentially free of preservatives. "Essentially free of preservatives" means that the emulsion paint contains preservatives at most in traces, in particular in an amount of less than 2 ppm. The emulsion paint according to the invention is preferably free of biocides, in particular isothiazolines. Examples of isothiazolines are methylisothiazolinone, chloromethylisothiazolinone, benzisothiazolinone, octylisothiazolinone, dichlorooctylisothiazolinone, and butylbenzisothiazolinone.
