Description

Title of the invention: compositions and methods for cleaning keratinous materials technical field

[0001] The disclosure relates to compositions for cleaning keratinous materials, and methods for using the compositions. The compositions are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants. CONTEXT

[0002] Personal care cleansing compositions such as shampoo, foaming gel, facial cleanser, etc., use anionic cleansing surfactants to remove sebum and exogenous contaminants such as dirt, makeup, styling products, etc., from the surface of keratinous materials such as skin and hair. When present at concentrations above the critical micellar concentration, the majority of surfactant molecules self-assemble into micelles that have a highly negative surface charge, allowing the surfactants to solubilize hydrophobic components in the aqueous phase of the composition, which are then removed from the keratinous material.

[0003] Typically, personal care cleansing compositions use sulfate-based anionic surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). These surfactants are commonly used because they have good foaming and cleansing properties, allow the composition to be easily thickened to achieve a desired viscosity, and are relatively inexpensive. However, the market is increasingly concerned about the negative effects of these or other sulfate-based surfactants on the skin and body. For example, sulfate-based surfactants tend to dry out hair and skin, bleach treated hair, and can cause skin and eye irritation. In addition, SLES can contain dioxanes, byproducts generated during the manufacturing process, which are considered carcinogenic at fairly high levels. As such, skin and hair cleansing compositions that are free or essentially free of sulfate-based surfactants are becoming increasingly desirable for consumers.

[0004] However, there are challenges in developing suitable personal care cleansing formulas without sulfate-based surfactants. For example, most existing sulfate-free personal care cleansers do not lather well, which is considered a significant drawback by consumers. Furthermore, Cleaning compositions containing anionic surfactants that are not sulfate-based do not thicken easily. Traditional methods for increasing the viscosity of these formulations are ineffective with sulfate-free surfactants.

[0005] Furthermore, some anionic cleansing surfactants, while effective cleansers, are undesirable for use in personal care compositions because their aggressive nature deprives hair or skin of natural components necessary for healthy functioning, negatively impacting, for example, the integrity of the skin barrier. In addition, some non-sulfate cleansing surfactants are ineffective at depositing conditioning components, such as moisturizing agents, onto treated keratinous materials.

[0006] Thus, it is necessary to develop personal care cleansing compositions that are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants, lather adequately, have a desired viscosity, and offer beneficial properties to keratinous materials. This, however, requires careful balancing of the components to ensure that the properties of the cleansing composition, as well as the properties imparted to keratinous materials, meet consumer needs. Such a balance has been difficult to achieve so far, however, because efforts to obtain certain properties of the cleansing composition, such as lathering or thickness, have interfered with efforts to obtain certain cosmetic properties imparted by the composition, such as moisture or hydration.

[0007] It has now been found that by using a unique combination of surfactants, humectants and film-forming agents, personal care cleansing compositions that are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants can be prepared which, amazingly, exhibit abundant, thick and creamy lather and desirable viscosity, while also providing excellent cosmetic properties to the hair such as detangling, ease of application, softness, curl definition, smooth hair texture, shine, sealed ends, a lush hair feel, volume, bounce, manageability and / or frizz control. PROCESSES

[0229] This disclosure also relates to processes for cleansing and / or revitalizing keratinous materials, in particular hair, skin, and / or scalp, with the compositions disclosed herein. The processes also include imparting one or more of the aforementioned properties to the treated keratinous materials. Without limitation, the processes for cleansing and / or revitalizing keratinous materials according to the disclosure may include applying a sufficient, or effective, amount of a composition disclosed herein to keratinous material, such as hair, skin, or scalp, which may be wet, damp, or dry, optionally allowing the composition to remain on the keratinous material for a desired duration, and optionally rinsing the composition from the keratinous material. The composition can optionally be lathered before application to keratinous materials, for example in the hands, or it can be lathered onto keratinous materials.

[0230] In certain embodiments, the compositions as disclosed are particularly useful for cleansing and conditioning hair. In addition, the These compositions offer a variety of desirable cosmetic and styling benefits for hair, such as smooth texture without heaviness, detangling, and frizz control. Therefore, the compositions are useful in hair cleansing processes, as well as in processes designed to give hair a smooth texture, detangle it, and / or control frizz. Accordingly, this disclosure encompasses hair cleansing processes and hair treatment processes using the compositions described herein.

[0231] Such processes typically include applying an effective amount of a composition of the present disclosure to the hair, leaving the composition on the hair for a period of time, and then rinsing the composition from the hair, followed by allowing the hair to air dry or drying the hair with a hairdryer that blows air through the hair and accelerates drying. Usually, the composition is simply left on the hair for a sufficient period of time to incorporate the composition throughout the hair, for example, by lathering the composition throughout the hair using the hands.

[0232] The duration is sufficient for the composition to interact with the hair and any dirt, oil, contamination, etc., that may be present on the hair so that, upon rinsing, the dirt, oil, contamination, etc., can be effectively removed from the hair and the conditioning agents in the composition can interact with the hair to condition it. Thus, the composition can be left on the hair for a drying period of up to approximately 30 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 15 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 10 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, approximately 10 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, or approximately 10 seconds to approximately 3 minutes. Alternatively, the composition can be removed immediately once lathering is complete, for example, without any waiting period. The composition is then rinsed from the hair, and the hair is allowed to dry.

[0233] As is often the case when using shampoo compositions, hair may be wetted or rinsed with water before applying a composition disclosed herein. The fact that hair already contains water can be helpful in creating lather when applying the compositions, as the water interacts with the surfactants.

[0234] After describing in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it will become apparent that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Furthermore, it should be noted that all the examples in this disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and should therefore not be considered as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It should be understood that all definitions in this document are provided solely for the purposes of this disclosure.

[0235] As used herein, the terms “comprising”, “having” and “including” (or “comprehension”, “having” and “include”) are used in their open, non-limiting sense.

[0236] As used here, the singular includes the plural unless specifically indicated otherwise. The singular forms "un," "une," "le," "la," and "au moins un(e)" are understood to encompass both the plural and the singular, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The expressions "un(e) ou plusieurs" and "au moins un(e)" are interchangeable and expressly include individual components as well as mixtures / combinations. Similarly, the expression "un de ses(leurs) sels" also refers to "ses(leurs) sels."Thus, when the disclosure refers to "at least one element chosen from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, one of their salts or mixtures thereof", it indicates that one or more elements from A, B, C, D and F may be included, that one or more salts from a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included, or that a mixture of any two elements from A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included.

[0237] The expression "and / or" should be understood as including both conjunctive and disjunctive clauses. For example, "water and / or non-aqueous solvents" means "water and non-aqueous solvents" as well as "water or non-aqueous solvents", and expressly covers cases of either.

[0238] As used herein, the expressions "and their mixtures", "and one of their mixtures", "and their combinations", "and one of their combinations", "or their mixtures", "or one of their mixtures", "or their combinations", and "or one of their combinations" are used interchangeably to indicate that the list of components immediately preceding the expression, such as "A, B, C, D, or their mixtures", means that the component(s) may be chosen from A, B, C, D, from A + B, from A + B + C, from A + D, from A + C + D, etc., without limitation as to their variations. Thus, the components may be used individually or in any of their combinations.

[0239] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that, for the sake of brevity, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified with the term "approximately". It is understood that, whether the term "approximately" is used explicitly or implicitly, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the actual value given, and is also intended to refer to the approximation of that value given that would be reasonably deduced by a person skilled in the art, including approximations due to the experimental and / or measurement conditions for that value.

[0240] All ranges and quantities stated herein are deemed to include subranges and quantities using any disclosed point as a boundary, and all boundaries are deemed to be included unless expressly stated otherwise. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, as well as 2% to 8%, as well as 3% to 5%" is deemed to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on. All numbers, quantities, ranges, etc., are deemed to be modified by the term "approximately", whether or not expressly stated, unless expressly stated otherwise. Similarly, a given range of "approximately 1% to 10%" is deemed to have its boundaries of both 1% and 10% modified by the term "approximately". The term "approximately" is used here to indicate a difference of up to + / - 10% from the stated number, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%.Unless expressly stated otherwise, "approximately" means + / - 5%. Similarly, all range boundaries are understood to be disclosed individually, such that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood to disclose a ratio of 1:2 and 2:1.

[0241] All quantities and ratios herein are given by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, unless otherwise stated. Unless otherwise stated, all percentages stated herein are by weight of active ingredient.

[0242] As used herein, the term “salts” throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions, however, is not exhaustive. Salts also include a dissociated form of a compound, for example, in an aqueous solution.

[0243] As used herein, the terms "apply a composition to keratinous materials" and "apply a composition to hair" and variations thereof are intended to refer to bringing keratinous material or hair into contact with at least one of the compositions of the disclosure, in any manner whatsoever.

[0244] “Cosmetically acceptable” means compatible with keratinous material. For example, a "cosmetically acceptable vector" refers to a vector that is compatible with all keratinous tissue.

[0245] The "keratinous material" as used herein includes skin and hair, such as hair on the human head, or hair including eyelashes or body hair.

[0246] As used herein, the term "revitalization" means the process of giving keratinous materials at least one property selected from combability, moisture retention, luster, shine, and softness. The state of revitalization may be assessed by any means known in the art, such as, for example, measurement and comparison. ease of combing treated and untreated hair in terms of combing work and consumer perception.

[0247] In this disclosure, a reference to a "shampoo" composition means a composition intended to cleanse keratinous fibers. Although shampoo compositions may also cleanse skin such as the scalp, those skilled in the art understand that the primary purpose of a shampoo composition is to cleanse keratinous fibers such as hair that grow from the scalp.

[0248] As used herein, the term "treat" (and its grammatical variations) refers to the application of the compositions of this disclosure to the surface of keratinous materials, such as hair.

[0249] Here, the term "plant" is intended to designate plant origin, for example derived from or obtained from a plant, and optionally modified and / or processed subsequently.

[0250] Unless otherwise defined for any specific embodiment, the expression "substantially free" or "essentially free," which is used interchangeably herein, means that there is less than approximately 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the composition. For example, compositions may include less than approximately 1.5%, less than approximately 1%, less than approximately 0.5%, less than approximately 0.1%, less than approximately 0.01%, less than approximately 0.001%, or less than approximately 0.0001% of the specified material. As such, it is envisaged that any component described herein for use in compositions may be present in the compositions in quantities less than approximately 2%, less than approximately 1.5%, less than approximately 1%, less than approximately 0.5%, less than approximately 0.1%, less than approximately 0.01%, less than approximately 0.001%, or less than approximately 0.0001%, and the composition shall be considered "substantially free" or "essentially free" of such material. A composition that is "free" of a component is understood to be one that contains no quantity of the specified component. However, it is understood that the terms "free" and "substantially free" refer to the quantity of a component added to the composition, without including a quantity of the component present in the composition as a minor component in a raw material. For example, a "wax-free" composition may not have wax included as an intended component, but may nevertheless contain a pigment that is coated with a wax, since such a wax would be considered a minor component of the pigment material and should not provide benefits to the composition that would be expected from including a wax itself as an intended component.

[0251] As used herein, the terms "sulfate-based surfactant" and "sulfate-containing surfactant" refer to surfactant compounds that include a sulfate group in their structure.

[0252] “Substituted”, as used here, means comprising at least one substitute. Non-limiting examples of substituents include atoms, such as oxygen and nitrogen atoms, as well as functional groups, such as hydroxyl groups, ether groups, alkoxy groups, acyloxyalkyl groups, oxyalkylene groups, polyoxyalkylene groups, carboxylic acid groups, amine groups, acylamino groups, amide groups, halogen-containing groups, ester groups, thiol groups, sulfonate groups, thiosulfate groups, siloxane groups, and polysiloxane groups. The substituent(s) may, in addition, be substituted.

[0253] Unless expressly stated otherwise, no process presented herein is intended to be interpreted as requiring that its steps be performed in a specific order. Accordingly, where a process does not expressly state that a specific order of steps must be followed or is not specifically stated that the steps must be limited to a specific order, no particular order is to be inferred from it.

[0254] It should also be understood that the precise numerical values used in the specification and claims constitute additional embodiments of the disclosure and are intended to include any range that can be reduced to any two bounds disclosed in the ranges and values given by way of example, as well as the specific bounds themselves.

[0255] Although the numerical ranges and parameters presenting the general scope of the disclosure are approximations, unless otherwise indicated, the numerical values presented in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, every numerical value inherently contains some errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation observed in their respective test measurements. The following examples serve to illustrate embodiments of the disclosure but are not intended to be exhaustive. Examples

[0256] The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and explanatory only. In the examples, quantities are expressed as a percentage by weight (% by weight) of active substances, relative to the total weight of the composition. Example 1 - Compositions

[0263] Example 2 - Comparison of the properties of shampoo compositions and treated hair

[0264] In order to evaluate the properties of shampoo compositions and hair treated with shampoo compositions according to the disclosure having a film-forming agent (modified potato starch) and a humectant (panthenol) compared with other sulfate-free shampoo compositions, cleansing routines using shampoo composition IA from Table IA were tested against routines using a commercially available shampoo composition, with ingredients as listed on the packaging indicated in Table IB.

[0265] Shampoo composition IA was applied to one half of a volunteer's hair by an expert. The shampoo was thoroughly massaged into the hair for 15 seconds before the hair was thoroughly rinsed. The same amount of comparative shampoo composition Cl, a commercially available 2-in-1 conditioning shampoo, was applied to the opposite side of the hair following the same procedure. The hair was then combed again, blow-dried, combed, and styled. Once the treatment was complete, the hair was assessed by the expert.

[0266] Figure 1 shows a graph comparing the expert's assessment of composition IA and composition CL. As can be seen in Figure 1, the expert rated the rapid foam formation (speed of foam formation) and ease of lathering of composition CL (containing sulfated surfactants) as slightly better than composition IA (sulfate-free). However, the abundance of shampoo for both compositions was rated as equivalent, and the foam stability (duration the foam remains) was better for composition IA.These results were surprising because, although composition Cl was expected to perform better in terms of foam formation given the presence of sulfate-based surfactants, the rapid foam formation and ease of foaming for composition IA according to the disclosure were both considered to be almost as good as those of composition CL. Furthermore, the abundance of foam for composition IA was not expected to be equivalent to that of composition Cl, nor was composition IA according to the disclosure expected to have better foam stability compared to composition Cl, because composition IA does not include sulfate-based surfactants.

[0267] Fig. 1 also shows that hair treated with composition IA according to the disclosure offers enhanced cosmetic benefits to the hair, including improved detangling, softness, suppleness and smooth texture, and shine, body, volume, bounce and frizz control. Example 3 - Further studies

[0268] To evaluate the impact that the quantities of film-forming agents and humectants have on the shampoo compositions according to the disclosure, the following studies were carried out using compositions 1B-1E having a film-forming agent (modified potato starch), comparative composition C2 which was a commercially available sulfate-containing shampoo composition, and comparative composition C3 which was identical to composition IB but did not include any film-forming agents.

[0269] In the studies, equal amounts of shampoo compositions IB, IC, 1D, 1E, C2, or C3 were massaged into separated strands of hair for 15 seconds. The hair was then rinsed for 15 seconds and dried. Figure 2 shows the strands after the process was completed. Strands treated with compositions 1B–1E were noticeably softer and smoother than strands treated with compositions C2 and C3.

[0270] Both during and after the treatment process, the properties of the treated hair were evaluated on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (good). The lather produced by the compositions was also evaluated during the treatment process using the same scale. The results are shown in Table 2.

[0273] As shown in Table 2, the foaming properties of the shampoo compositions 1B-1E according to the disclosure were comparable to the foaming properties of the comparative compositions C2-C3. However, the cosmetic benefits imparted to the hair once dried were significantly better for the shampoo compositions 1B-1E, particularly compared to composition C2, which did not include any film-forming agent.

[0274] This study demonstrates that the shampoo compositions disclosed not only produce excellent lather even in the absence of sulfate-based surfactants, but also that the combination of film-forming agents and humectants provides hair benefits such as smooth texture, frizz reduction, and curl elongation, which are typically associated with styling products rather than shampoos. These benefits, which were not expected from a sulfate-free shampoo composition, are believed to be the result of a previously unknown synergy between the non-sulfate surfactant system and the film-forming and humectant agents present in the compositions. Example 4# - Additional Compositions

[0275] Compositions 2A-2D can also be prepared as indicated in Table 3, and are also expected to provide similar benefits of lathering, cleansing, detangling, softness, frizz control and smooth texture.

[0278] The above examples demonstrate that the combination of surfactants, humectants and film-forming agents as disclosed is surprisingly effective in cleansing and providing desired cosmetic properties to hair, as well as in generating abundant, thick and creamy lather in sulfate-free shampoo compositions.
