Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method for characterizing waste based on a photograph acquired by a phone or tablet. The photograph is associated with sensor data from the phone or tablet and / or data describing the dimensions of a reference object. The method includes segmenting the given photograph by applying a segmentation model. The segmentation model divides the photograph into several segments and classifies each segment into a list of predetermined classifications. Each segment corresponds to a type of waste. The list of predetermined classifications is a list of waste type classifications. The method further includes calculating the mass of each type of waste. The calculation is based on the segmented given photograph and the data associated with the photograph.
