Abstract
The invention relates to a method for recycling perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes used in various applications, such as energy conversion and storage (proton exchange membrane fuel cells or PEMFCs, redox flow batteries), hydrogen production (water electrolyzers), the chlorine and alkali industry, and medical diagnostic technologies. The method of the invention comprises a step of dispersing the membrane in an ionic liquid under specific temperature and time conditions and recovering the ionomer to reconstitute a proton-conducting membrane.
