Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for characterizing the coefficient of friction available to a motor vehicle, the method comprising: a step (201) of calculating the inter-axle speed slip of the vehicle; steps (221, 222) of calculating the entropy of said inter-axle speed slip of the vehicle and of one or more indicators representative of the state of contact between at least one tire of the vehicle and the road surface; a step (203) of classifying the coefficient of friction available to the vehicle by a trained machine learning classification algorithm taking as input said indicator and said entropy; a step (204) of using the class of the coefficient of friction available to the vehicle calculated by a driver assistance system for the motor vehicle.
