The compositions demonstrate improved molluscicidal activity, reducing mollusc populations effectively and safely, with reduced usage amounts and long-term protection, suitable for organic certification.
Abstract
Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to molluscicidal compositions. In particular, the invention relates to molluscicidal compositions comprising iron phosphate and glucoheptonic acid, the production of said compositions and methods and uses thereof. BACKGROUND Terrestrial pulmonate gastropods, including slugs and snails (collectively referred to as u), are significant pests in agriculture, horticulture, and home gardens. As omnivores, these molluscs consume substantial amounts of plant material during daily foraging, posing a serious threat to vegetable gardens and crops throughout all stages of their growth cycle. Given their potential for destruction, effective control measures are necessary to protect growing plants from damage. Various methods have been developed to control pest molluscs, with the most common approach being the use of toxic substances known as molluscicides. These compounds include a range of chemicals such as sodium chloride (table salt), calcium arsenate, copper sulphate, metaldehyde, and iron chelated with EDTA (FeEDTA). Molluscicides are classified into two primary categories based on how they work: contact poisons and ingestible (or bait) poisons. Contact poisons work by requiring direct physical contact with the mollusc. They are either applied externally or placed on the ground, where the mollusc picks them up through its proteinaceous slime coat. The poison gradually accumulates in the mollusc’s body until a lethal dose is reached. However, a key limitation of contact poisons is their ineffectiveness if the molluscs do not come into contact with the active ingredient. If molluscs are hiding or enter the area after the poison is applied, they remain unaffected. This makes contact poisons generally unreliable as a control method. Ingestible, or bait-based, molluscicides must be consumed by the mollusc to be effective. These poisons are often favoured over contact poisons because the latter are less reliable. The challenge with bait molluscicides lies in creating a formula that is both palatable to molluscs and lethal. Sufficient amounts must be ingested to reach a fatal dose, but many compounds that are lethal are not appealing to molluscs, while palatable substances may not be effective as poisons. For instance, chemicals such as aluminium sulphate, copper sulphate, and borax are ineffective as bait poisons because molluscs do not find them palatable enough to ingest in lethal quantities. Ingestible poisons must strike a balance, being attractive enough for molluscs to consume in large amounts, while also acting slowly enough to prevent the mollusc from becoming ill or stopping its feeding before ingesting a fatal dose. However, the molluscicide compositions proposed on the market are made of materials that would not allow for an environmentally responsible use in the field. The use of EDTA as a chelate for iron for example does not meet the requirement for organic certification. Similarly bait-based molluscicides often use fillers or components that would meet the requirement for organic certification. Therefore, there is a current need for efficacious organically certified molluscicide compositions. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present inventors have developed novel molluscicidal compositions that reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides. The compositions of the present invention are designed to be compatible with standard agricultural practices and therefore can seamlessly integrate into existing farming systems. The compositions of the invention can be used as a means of sustainable pest control, offering a scalable, non-toxic alternative to known pesticides whilst also addressing critical environmental, agricultural, and regulatory challenges. In particular, the present inventors have demonstrated for the first time that iron phosphate chelated with the carbohydrate acid glucoheptonic acid or a salt thereof (e.g. are effective molluscicidal agents. Whilst FeEDTA-Na has been described in the art as a molluscicide, prior to the present invention, the effectiveness of a carbohydrate-based iron chelate as a molluscicide has not previously been considered, let alone demonstrated. Further, the present inventors have generated molluscicidal active compositions comprising carbohydrate-based iron chelate and have demonstrated that these have improved molluscicidal activity compared with conventional molluscicides, including FeEDTA-Na based molluscicides. Thus, the inventors have molluscicidal active compositions with improved activity and that are capable of organic certification. The publications discussed herein are provided solely for their disclosure prior to the filing date of the present application. Nothing herein is to be construed as an admission that such publications constitute prior art to the claims appended hereto. COMPOSITIONS The present invention provides a molluscicide composition comprising: (a) at least one phagostimulant; (b) iron; and (c) glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof. Typically, the iron is provided in the form of iron phosphate. The term “molluscicidal composition” refers to a composition comprising an agent which acts as a pesticide against organisms of the phylum Mollusca. Typically, a composition of the invention acts as an active molluscicide. As used herein, the term active means that the composition actively attracts a mollusc (e.g. using the at least one phagostimulant). Consumption of the composition comprising the iron glucoheptonate chelate may kill the mollusc, inhibit development of the mollusc, alter fertility or growth of the mollusc in such a manner that the mollusc provides less damage to the plant, decrease the number of offspring produced, produce less fit molluscs(i.e. the molluscs have lower levels of fitness), produce molluscs more susceptible to predator attack or deter the molluscs from eating the plant. Preferably, consumption of the composition comprising the iron glucoheptonate chelate will kill the mollusc. A composition of the invention may be a passive molluscicide. As used herein, the term passive means that when the composition is applied to a locus, for example by drilling or placing molluscicidal pellets of the invention into soil (e.g., furrows), the iron glucoheptonate chelate will leach from the composition and be absorbed by the plants (e.g. crops) in the locus. Systemic distribution of the iron glucoheptonate chelate in the plant means that consumption of the plant (e.g. crop) comprising the iron glucoheptonate chelate will be lethal to the mollusc. Preferably, a composition of the invention acts as both an active and passive molluscicide. This dual-action system tackles mollusc populations directly and protects crops in the long term, offering significant benefits for UK farmers, gardeners, and growers. A composition of the invention may be formulated in various ways using formulation adjuvants, such as carriers, solvents and surface-active substances. The formulations can be in various physical forms, e.g. in the form of dusting powders, gels, wettable powders, water-dispersible granules, water-dispersible tablets, effervescent pellets, emulsifiable concentrates, micro-emulsifiable concentrates, oil-in-water emulsions, oil-flowables, aqueous dispersions, oily dispersions, suspo-emulsions, capsule suspensions, emulsifiable granules, soluble liquids, water-soluble concentrates (with water or a water-miscible organic solvent as carrier), impregnated polymer films or in other forms known e.g. from the Manual on Development and Use of FAQ and WHO Specifications for Pesticides, United Nations, First Edition, Second Typically the composition is a solid formulation, as described further herein, preferably a pellet or granule. Advantageously, the compositions of the invention are not toxic to mammals (e.g. humans) and / or bees. Compositions of the invention are therefore safe for widespread use in agricultural and horticultural settings. A composition of the invention may be produced according to the methods described herein. In addition to the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate), and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof; a composition of the invention may comprise one or more additive. Typically said one or more additive may be selected from an active ingredient, an adjuvant, a carrier, a diluent, an emulsifying agent and an inert ingredient. As described herein, the “phagostimulant” means a component that induces sustained feeding and / or a synthetic compound that is added to bait in order to attract molluscs. The term “active ingredient” is intended to mean any substance that is capable of repelling, or otherwise controlling a target pest (e.g., a mollusc). The term “adjuvant” means a chemical that is combined with the composition to improve mixing, application or to enhance molluscicidal activity. The term “carrier” means a substance that aids the effective dispersal of the composition (e.g., talc in a dust formulation). The term “diluent” means anything used to dilute a pesticide. The term “emulsifying agent” is intended to mean any agent which helps to prevent an emulsion from separating. The term “inert ingredient” means any ingredient other than the active ingredient. Inert ingredients may be added to dilute the pesticide or to make it safer, more effective, and easier to measure, mix, apply, and handle. Non-limiting examples of such additives are described herein. Thus, a composition of the invention may further comprise or consist of active ingredient, adjuvant, carrier, diluent, emulsifying agent and / or inert ingredient. The compositions of the present invention typically exhibit good biological stability, as defined herein, and hence have a commercially advantageous shelf-life. A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 6-months at ambient temperature (21 °C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 12-months at ambient temperature (21 °C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 18-months at ambient temperature (21 °C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 24-months at ambient temperature (21 °C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for up to 24-months at ambient temperature (21 °C). Alternatively, or in addition, a composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 5 days at an elevated temperature (54°C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 7 days at an elevated temperature (54°C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 10 days at an elevated temperature (54°C). A composition of the invention may be biologically stable for at least 14 days at an elevated temperature (54°C). Without being bound by theory, it is believed that the compositions of the invention retain a low water content (as defined herein) whilst being stored, which is at least partially responsible for their biological stability. For example, a composition of the invention may have a water content of <10% w / w for at least 6-months, at least 12-months, at least 18-months or at least 24-months. By way of further example, a composition of the invention may have a water content of <5% w / w for at least 6-months, at least 12-months, at least 18-months or at least 24-months. By way of further example, a composition of the invention may have a water content of <2% w / w for at least 6-months, at least 12-months, at least 18-months or at least 24-months. Phagostimulants A molluscicide composition of the invention comprises at least one phagostimulant. As described herein said at least one phagostimulant functions as bait to attract a mollusc (e.g. a gastropod such as a slug or snail) to the composition. Suitable phagostimulants are well known to the skilled person, and include cereal grains or flour (e.g., wheat, corn or bran grains, wheat flour, cornflour, grain flour or bakers’ flour), rice, fruit extracts, molasses, sugars (e.g., sucrose, glucose, lactose and / or fructose), yeast extracts, beer, fermented foods, and / or foods with a strong odour. For example, the composition may comprise one or more phagostimulant selected from cereal grains or flour (e.g., wheat, corn or bran grains, wheat flour, corn flour, grain flour or bakers flour), oat (e.g. oat flour), rice (e.g. rice bran flour), soy (e.g. soy flour), fruit extracts, molasses, sugars (e.g., sucrose, glucose, lactose and / or fructose), yeast extracts, beer, fish meal, fermented foods, and / or foods with a strong odour. The composition may comprise at least one phagostimulant selected from cereal grains or flour (e.g., wheat, corn or bran grains, wheat flour, cornflour, grain flour or bakers’ flour). The composition may comprise at least one phagostimulant selected from wheat flour, soy flour, oat flour, rice bran flour, yeast extract, molasses, fish meal and cornflour. Glucoheptonic acid A composition of the invention comprises glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof. Unless expressly stated to the contrary any reference herein to glucoheptonic acid also encompasses salts of glucoheptonic acid. Glucoheptonic acid (PubChem CID 25588) has the structure: The nature of the glucoheptonic acid salt is not particularly limited, provided that the glucoheptonic acid retains the ability to chelate iron to produce iron glucoheptonate chelate. Non-limiting examples of glucoheptonic acid salts include sodium salts, potassium salts and calcium salts. In some preferred embodiments, the glucoheptonic acid salt is a sodium salt of glucoheptonic acid, more preferably a-D-Glucoheptonic acid sodium salt (CAS No. 10094-62-9, PubChem CID 24895128). A composition of the invention comprises glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof at an amount of at least about 0.1 % w / w, at least about 0.2% w / w, at least about 0.3% w / w, at least about 0.4% w / w, at least about 0.5% w / w, at least about 0.6% w / w, at least about 0.7% w / w, at least about 0.8% w / w, at least about 0.9% w / w, at least about 1% w / w, at least about 1.1% w / w, at least about 1.2% w / w, at least about 1.3% w / w, at least about 1.4% w / w or at least about 1.5% w / w, preferably at least about 0.1 % w / w or at least about 0.5% w / w. A composition of the invention comprises glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof at an amount of between about 0.1% w / w to about 5% w / w of the composition, such as between about 0.1% w / w to about 4% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 3% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 2.5% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 2% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 1.5% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 1% w / w, between about 0.1% w / w to about 0.5% w / w, about 0.2% w / w to about 5% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 4% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 3% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 2.5% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 2% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 1.5% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 1% w / w, between about 0.2% w / w to about 0.5% w / w, about 0.3% w / w to about 5% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 4% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 3% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 2.5% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 2% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 1.5% w / w, between about 0.3% w / w to about 1% w / w, or between about 0.3% w / w to about 0.5% w / w of the composition. Preferably, the glucoheptonic acid or acceptable salt thereof may be sodium glucoheptonate. Cores A composition of the invention may further comprise or consist of a core. The use of a core may be advantageous of any of several reasons. Without being bound by theory, the use of a core may allow the at least one phagostimulant and the iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof to be evenly coated on the surface of the composition (bait), allowing lower amounts of phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof to be used to achieve the same molluscicidal effect. Again, without being bound by theory, the use of a core may improve the ballistic properties of the composition and / or dispensing of the composition, allowing it to be handled and used more easily. Further, without being bound by theory, the core itself and / or the use of binders to coat the core can be beneficial in maintaining the physical integrity of the composition, retarding leaching of the iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof, or the resulting iron glucoheptonate chelate, from the composition. Further, without being bound by theory, the core itself and / or the use of binders to coat the core can themselves have phagostimulant activity, attracting the mollusc pests to be controlled. Typically, the core is an inert core. The term “inert” means a material that does not have molluscicidal activity. An “inert material” means any material other than the active material. Inert materials may impart properties to the composition, e.g. making it safer, more effective, and easier to measure, mix, apply, and / or handle. When a composition of the invention comprises a core, said core may be coated with the composition of the invention. Thus, the invention provides a composition comprising an (inert) core, wherein the (inert) core is coated with a mixture of the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof. Coating of the core with a mixture of the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof may be carried out by any appropriate method, suitable examples of which are known in the art. By way of non-limiting example, the core granules may be compressed into a prill and then coated with a mixture of the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof. By way of further non-limiting example, the core may be already in a prill form, for example dolomite cores may be produced from quarried rock, which may then be directly coated with a mixture of the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof. The thickness of the coating of the at least one phagostimulant, iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof on an inert core is not particularly limited, provided that a sufficient amount of the at least one phagostimulant is present to attract and stimulate consumption of the composition by a mollusc, and that a sufficient amount of iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof is present to form an iron glucoheptonate chelate with molluscicidal activity. . By way of non-limiting example, the thickness of the coating may be of at least about 0.1 mm, at least about 0.5 mm, at least about 1 mm, at least about 1.5 mm or at least about 2 mm. The thickness of the coating may alternatively be of less than about 2 mm, less than about 1.5 mm, less than about 1 mm or less than about 0.5 mm. The thickness of the coating may alternatively be comprised between about 0.1 mm and about 2 mm, between about 0.1 mm and about 1.5 mm, between about 0.1 mm and about 1 mm, between about 0.1 mm and about 0.5 mm, between about 0.5 mm and about 2 mm, between about 0.5 mm and about 1.5 mm, or between about 0.5 mm and about 1 mm. The material of the inert core is not particularly limited, provided that the core is inert. Thus, the inert core may comprise or consist of or consists of an inorganic material and / or an organic material. Non-limiting examples of inorganic materials include dolomite, lime, reactive and / or rock phosphate, gypsum, bentonite, kaolin, talc, attapulgite and diatomaceous clay. In some preferred embodiments, the inorganic material is dolomite. Suitable organic materials include that are the waste-product or by-product of an agricultural process. By way of nonlimiting example, suitable organic materials include frass, worm castings, bat guano, chicken manure, seaweed or kelp meal. In some preferred embodiments, the organic material is frass, with black solider fly larvae frass being particularly preferred. The inert core may be made of a non-porous material. Without being bound by theory, such cores may be advantageous as they are less prone to swelling and / or deformity when contacted with water (e.g. in the rain) compare with cores made from porous materials. Alternatively, or in addition, such non-porous cores may be less susceptible to mould or spoilage. Further alternatively or in addition, such non-porous cores may be advantageous as reduced water content may maintain and / or improve the activity of the iron (e.g. iron phosphate) and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof (or the resulting iron glucoheptonate chelate). The size of the (inert) core is not particularly limited. The size of the (inert) core may be selected using any appropriate technique, examples of which are known in the art. Standard granulation may be used to grind the core material to granules of the desired size, so that each individual core (i.e. each granule) is of the desired size. The (inert) core of the invention may have an average diameter of <2.4mm, such as <2.3mm, <2.2mm, <2.1mms <2.0mms <1.9mms <1.8mms <1.7mms <1.6mms <1.5mms <1.4mms <1.3mms <1.2mms or <1.1 mm. The (inert) core of the invention may have an average diameter of between about 1.1mm to about 2.4mm, such as between about 1.1mm to about 2.3mm, between about 1.1mm to about 2.2mm, between about 1.1mm to about 2.1mm, between about 1.1mm to about 2.0mm, between about 1,2mm to about 2.4mm, between about 1,2mm to about 2.3mm, between about 1.2mm to about 2.2mm, between about 1.2mm to about 2.1mm, between about 1.2mm to about 2.0mm, between about 1.3mm to about 2.4mm, between about 1.3mm to about 2.3mm, between about 1.3mm to about 2.2mm, between about 1.3mm to about 2.1mm, between about 1,3mm to about 2.0mm, between about 1,4mm to about 2.4mm, between about 1.4mm to about 2.3mm, between about 1.4mm to about 2.2mm, between about 1.4mm to about 2.1 mm, or between about 1,4mm to about 2.0mm. Any appropriate means may be used to quantify the size of the core. For example, sieve analysis may be used to determine the average diameter of cores retained. By way of example, using a sieve with a 2.4mm mesh, the %w / w of cores retained may be 0% w / w (i.e. all cores are <2.4mm in diameter). By way of further example, using a sieve with a 2.0mm mesh, the %w / w of cores retained may be approximately 2-5% w / w (i.e. 2-5% w / w of the cores are <2.0mm in diameter). By way of further example, using a sieve with a 1.7mm mesh, the %w / w of cores retained may be approximately 20-30% w / w (i.e. 20-30% w / w of the cores are <1,7mm in diameter). By way of further example, using a sieve with a 1.4mm mesh, the %w / w of cores retained may be approximately 60-70% w / w (i.e. 60-70% w / w of the cores are <1.4m in diameter). By way of further example, using a sieve with a 1.18mm mesh, the %w / w of cores retained may be approximately 98% w / w (i.e. approximately 98% w / w of the cores are <1.18mm in diameter). The (inert) core may be of any of any shape, e.g. spherical or cylindrical. An (inert) core of the invention may comprise one or more additive, as described herein in the context of the compositions of the invention. Thus, in a composition of the invention one or more additive may be present within a core, and / or within the mixture coated onto a core (the coating) The one or more additive present in the core and / or within the coating may be selected independently. For the avoidance of doubt, disclosure herein relating to additives (including the type of additive and / or the amount thereof) applies equally and without reservation to additives within the core or the coating. Where amounts of additives are given, these may be the amount within the core, the amount within the coating, or the total amount present in a composition (core and coating combined). By way of non-limiting example, an inert core comprising an organic material may comprise or consist of: (i) one or more binder (e.g. Povidone (PVP), Hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, starch, sucrose or gelatine), optionally at an amount of between about 2.5% w / w to about 5% w / w; (ii) a filler optionally at an amount of between about 20% w / w to about 30% w / w and (iii) one or more phagostimulant (e.g. frass, worm castings, bat guano, chicken manure, seaweed, kelp meal or lactose, preferably frass, more preferably black solider fly larvae frass), optionally at an amount of between about 20% w / w to about 30% w / w. Said core may have a water content of <5% w / w, preferably <2% w / w. Additives The one or more additive may comprise one or more additive, as described herein. Typically said one or more additive may be selected from an active ingredient, an adjuvant, a carrier, a diluent, an emulsifying agent, a binder, a filler, a viscosity modifier, a preservative, a colorant, a lubricant and a glidant. Thus, a composition may comprise a further active agent, wherein the active agent is a further pesticide. Suitable known pesticides include those disclosed in the Pesticide Manual (The Pesticide Manual - A World Compendium; Seventeenth edition; Editor: C. D. S. Tomlin; The British Crop Protection Council). For example, the composition may comprise a further active agent selected from an acaricide, bactericide, fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, miticide, molluscicide, or a nematicide. When present, the further pesticide may be a second molluscicide. Preferably, the iron glucoheptonate chelate in the composition is the only molluscicidal agent present. Further preferably, a composition of the invention does not comprise an additional pesticide. A composition of the invention may further comprise or consist of at least one crop enhancing additive. According to the present invention, ‘crop enhancement’ or ‘enhancing crops’ means an improvement in plant vigour, an improvement in plant quality, improved tolerance to stress factors and / or improved input use efficiency. According to the present invention, an ‘improvement in plant vigour’ means that certain traits are improved qualitatively or quantitatively when compared with the same trait in a control plant which has been grown under the same conditions in the absence of a composition of the invention. Such traits include, but are not limited to, early and / or improved germination, improved emergence, the ability to use less seeds, increased root growth, a more developed root system, increased root nodulation, increased shoot growth, increased tillering, stronger tillers, more productive tillers, increased or improved plant stand, less plant verse (lodging), an increase and / or improvement in plant height, an increase in plant weight (fresh or dry), bigger leaf blades, greener leaf colour, increased pigment content, increased photosynthetic activity, earlier flowering, longer panicles, early grain maturity, increased seed, fruit or pod size, increased pod or ear number, increased seed number per pod or ear, increased seed mass, enhanced seed filling, less dead basal leaves, delay of senescence, improved vitality of the plant, increased levels of amino acids in storage tissues and / or less inputs needed (e.g. less fertiliser, water and / or labour needed). A plant with improved vigour may have an increase in any of the aforementioned traits or any combination or two or more of the aforementioned traits. According to the present invention, an ‘improvement in plant quality’ means that certain traits are improved qualitatively or quantitatively when compared with the same trait in a control plant which has been grown under the same conditions in the absence of a composition of the invention. Such traits include, but are not limited to, improved visual appearance of the plant, reduced ethylene (reduced production and / or inhibition of reception), improved quality of harvested material, e.g. seeds, fruits, leaves, vegetables (such improved quality may manifest as improved visual appearance of the harvested material), improved carbohydrate content (e.g. increased quantities of sugar and / or starch, improved sugar acid ratio, reduction of reducing sugars, increased rate of development of sugar), improved protein content, improved oil content and composition, improved nutritional value, reduction in anti-nutritional compounds, improved organoleptic properties (e.g. improved taste) and / or improved consumer health benefits (e.g. increased levels of vitamins and anti-oxidants)), improved postharvest characteristics (e.g. enhanced shelf-life and / or storage stability, easier processability, easier extraction of compounds), more homogenous crop development (e.g. synchronised germination, flowering and / or fruiting of plants), and / or improved seed quality (e.g. for use in following seasons). A plant with improved quality may have an increase in any of the aforementioned traits or any combination or two or more of the aforementioned traits. According to the present invention, an ‘improved tolerance to stress factors’ means that certain traits are improved qualitatively or quantitatively when compared with the same trait in a control plant which has been grown under the same conditions in the absence of a composition of the invention. Such traits include, but are not limited to, an increased tolerance and / or resistance to abiotic stress factors which cause sub-optimal growing conditions such as drought (e.g. any stress which leads to a lack of water content in plants, a lack of water uptake potential or a reduction in the water supply to plants), cold exposure, heat exposure, osmotic stress, UV stress, flooding, increased salinity (e.g. in the soil), increased mineral exposure, ozone exposure, high light exposure and / or limited availability of nutrients (e.g. nitrogen and / or phosphorus nutrients). A plant with improved tolerance to stress factors may have an increase in any of the aforementioned traits or any combination or two or more of the aforementioned traits. In the case of drought and nutrient stress, such improved tolerances may be due to, for example, more efficient uptake, use or retention of water and nutrients. According to the present invention, an ‘improved input use efficiency’ means that the plants are able to grow more effectively using given levels of inputs compared to the growth of control plants which are grown under the same conditions in the absence of a composition of the invention. In particular, the inputs include, but are not limited to fertiliser (such as nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, micronutrients), light and water. A plant with improved input use efficiency may have an improved use of any of the aforementioned inputs or any combination of two or more of the aforementioned inputs. Other crop enhancements of the present invention include a decrease in plant height, or reduction in tillering, which are beneficial features in crops or conditions where it is desirable to have less biomass and fewer tillers. Any of or all the above crop enhancements may lead to an improved yield by improving, for example, plant physiology, plant growth and development and / or plant architecture. In the context of the present invention ‘yield’ includes, but is not limited to, (i) an increase in biomass production, grain yield, starch content, oil content and / or protein content, which may result from (a) an increase in the amount produced by the plant per se or (b) an improved ability to harvest plant matter, (ii) an improvement in the composition of the harvested material (e.g. improved sugar acid ratios, improved oil composition, increased nutritional value, reduction of anti-nutritional compounds, increased consumer health benefits) and / or (iii) an increased / facilitated ability to harvest the crop, improved processability of the crop and / or better storage stability / shelf life. Increased yield of an agricultural plant means that, where it is possible to take a quantitative measurement, the yield of a product of the respective plant is increased by a measurable amount over the yield of the same product of the plant produced under the same conditions, but without application of the present invention. According to the present invention, it is preferred that the yield be increased by at least 0.5%, preferably 1%, 2%, 3% or more. Even more preferred is an increase in yield of at least about 5%, 10%, 15% or 20% or more. Any, or all, of the above crop enhancements may also lead to an improved utilisation of land, that is land which was previously unavailable or sub-optimal for cultivation may become available. For example, plants which show an increased ability to survive in drought conditions, may be able to be cultivated in areas of sub-optimal rainfall, for example on the fringe of a desert or even the desert itself. Said coated cores may be referred to as coated core prill. Such core prill may be formed by granulation of the materials comprised in the core, followed by compression of the granules (cores) into prills. The size of the solid composition (e.g. core prill or pellet) is not particularly limited, and may be selected based on standard sizes for a given type of solid formulation. By way of non-limiting example, when the solid composition is in pellet form, the average (e.g. mean) diameter of the pellets may be in the region of from about 1mm to about 10mm, particularly from about 1mm to about 5mm. For example, average (e.g. mean) diameter of the pellets may be in the region of from about 1,4mm to about 3.5mm. These are not limiting on the scope of the invention, and a person skilled in the art would be appreciate that suitable equivalents could be used within the scope of the present invention. Thus, the Examples may be considered component parts of the invention, and the individual aspects described therein may be considered as disclosed independently, or in any combination. Example 1 - Example of composition of the invention “Anvil” composition The “Anvil” composition was prepared by coating an inert core (dolomite chip; 671.83 g) with a mixture of iron phosphate dihydrate (Fe 29%; 30 g; CAS 13463-10-0), glucoheptonic sodium slat aqueous solution at 30% w / w (36 mL; CAS 31138-65-5), wheat flour (194.54 g), cornflour (29.02 g), maize starch (6.45 g), hydroxyethylecellulose (1.17 g), sorbic acid (0.97 g;), green pigment (0.54 g), potassium sorbate (0.08 g), calcium carbonate (9.41 g) and water (19.89 g). Example 2 - Control of slugs and snails on cabbage using Iron Phosphate with Glucoheptonate Two sights trials were conducted to measure the control of slugs and snails using a composition of the invention comprising iron phosphate with glucoheptonate (i.e. iron glucoheptonate chelate), applied at 7kg / Ha (referred to in the Tables and Figures herein as “Anvil”). This was compared with a conventional FeEDTA product (referred to in the Tables and Figures herein as “Dawn”) applied at 7kg / Ha, and a metaldehyde product (referred to in the Tables and Figures herein as “Slugout”) applied at 10kg / Ha. As shown in Table 1 below, in the first trial, the Anvil composition of the invention significantly increased the % wt of the plant that is the cabbage heart compared with the Dawn or Slugout compositions (53% compared with 32% and 43%, respectively). This is also shown in Figure 1. As shown in Table 2 below, in the second trial, the Anvil composition of the invention resulted in an observable increase in the % wtof the plant that is the cabbage heart compared with the Dawn composition (59% compared with 55%). This is also shown in Figure 2. Significantly, and as shown in Table 3 below, in the first trial, the amount of damage to the cabbage plants was significantly reduced using Anvil composition of the invention compared with the Dawn or Slugout compositions. This is also shown in Figure 3. This reduction in damage was also observed in the second trial (see Table 4 and Figure 4). Producing 1 kilogram of BSFL protein typically requires around 2.5 to 4 kilograms of dry feed, such that producing 1 kilogram of BSFL protein results in approximately 500 grams to 1.6 kilograms of frass. Based on Current Trends BSFL, is growing rapidly due to its potential for sustainable protein production, with reports suggesting that the global market for insects as animal feed could reach several billion dollars by the end of the decade. As such, within the next 10 years BSFL frass production with be approx. 185,700 tons / year. BSFLfrass is used to produce a core prill for coating using the following exemplary components and key manufacturing steps. Additional components include: • Binders such as Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC), Starch, Gelatin, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), Sucrose; • Fillers such as Lactose, Mannitol, Calcium Phosphate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Perlite; • Lubricants such as Magnesium Stearate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Stearyl Fumarate • Glidants such as Colloidal silicon dioxide and Talc To make prill from BSFL frass, the following manufacturing process is used: 1. Blending - The active ingredient and excipients are thoroughly mixed to ensure uniform homogeneous distribution, such as within a tulip or rotary mixer. 2. Granulation - Wet Granulation: Liquid is added to the powder mix, forming granules which are then dried. - Dry Granulation: Powders are compressed into slugs or sheets and then milled into granules. 3. Milling - To ensure granules are of appropriate size and even distribution. 4. Compression - The granulated mixture is compressed into prills using a tablet press or similar machinery. The resulting prill can be coated with a mixture of the at least one phagostimulant, iron phosphate and glucoheptonic acid or an acceptable salt thereof, according to the invention.
