Abstract
Description
This invention relates to tracking fitness. In particular, though not exclusively, this invention relates to a device that tracks fitness, and to a method for tracking fitness. BACKGROUND Technology is continuously undergoing development and is incorporated heavily in daily lives. Nowadays, the technology is used to capture contextual information to deliver a personalized experience to a user. A category of technology, such as, wearable technology delivers such personalized experience to the user seamlessly, by way of wearing or attaching a device (such as, for example, a wearable) implementing the wearable technology, to the user's body. Examples of the wearable technology may include, but are not limited to, smart watches, virtual reality headsets, wearable electrocardiograms. Additionally, the wearable technology is implemented in various fields, such as, healthcare, education, transport, finance, gaming, music, and the like. Such a device is able to seamlessly monitor fitness level, physical activity, and the like, while being hands-free and portable. However, the device requires continuous feedback between the device and the user. The continuous feedback is provided using sensors and is displayed on a display to indicate health metrics of the user, wherein the display may be operably coupled to a user device (like, a mobile phone). Herein, the display of the health metrics of the user can be directly on the device or relayed over a wireless link to the user device or other non-wearable device. The health metrics are only beneficial to the user when correct information regarding health of the user is shown based on a type of activity, and an environment where the device is operating therein. However, despite progress in providing continuous feedback between the device and the user, existing devices employing wearable technology suffer from poor accuracy when the environment surrounding the device changes abruptly, and the type of activity based on the environment is not detected properly. Thereby, inaccurate health metrics are displayed, which further causes considerable error in diagnosing any underlying health issue of the user. Existing devices use motion-based sensors to generate sensor data and processes the sensor data to interpret an activity of the user. However, whenever there is a change in activity based on the environment, i.e. from walking to swimming, the motion-based measurements are interpreted inaccurately, thereby displaying inaccurate health metrics of the user. This is because the device is not able to distinguish amongst the activities along with a change in the environment. Moreover, the motion-based sensors that are used to detect water have high power consumption, bulky, cost-intensive, and / or difficult to fully seal to protect electronics within the motion-based sensors. Some existing devices employ a capacitive sensor to detect the change in the environment, i.e., whether the device is in a terrestrial area or at least partially under water. However, such a capacitive sensor consumes more power than other sensors (such as, for example, an accelerometer sensor, a magnetic sensor) and also increases the cost of the device. Additionally, when the device needs to be utilised at least partially underwater, the device needs to sealed in such a way so as to not damage an internal circuit of the device. However, this increases the cost of the device and makes the device bulky. Furthermore, complete absence of radio communications could be partly used as an indicator that the device may be submerged in water. However, due to other potential causes of absence of radio communications, which could lead to a false positive judgement of immersion that may be caused by swimming. Therefore, in light of the foregoing discussion, there exists a need to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks associated with existing devices for properly tracking fitness of the user. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A first aspect of the invention provides a device comprising at least one transceiver to send and / or receive signals; and a processor communicably coupled to the at least one transceiver. The processor is configured to measure and monitor one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver, wherein the one or more antenna performance parameters comprise one or more of: voltage standing wave ratio, an impedance, a return loss, a gain, a bandwidth, a signal to noise ratio (SNR), a received signal strength, a directivity, a transmitter power output, and a tuning capacitance; and determine, based on a change in the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver, whether the device is immersed in water. Advantageously, the device is configured to be simple, fast, accurate, and improved as compared to existing devices, in order to track fitness by identifying the activity of a user based on an environment of the device. The device seamlessly distinguishes the change in the environment, and is able to generate sensor data related to the activity performed in the environment accordingly. The device can be used at least partially under water with no significant change in methodology of sealing the device. The device consumes less battery, as compared to existing devices using capacitive sensors, and is robust in nature. Throughout the present disclosure, the term "device" refers to an electronic device that is configured to perform a required estimation based on an environment of a user at a current time, and display an output accordingly. The required estimation can be accurate, based on a configuration of the device. Examples of such device may include, but is not limited to, a tablet, a phablet, a human machine interface, a personal digital assistant, and the like. The device can be used for a prolonged period of time. Herein, the period of time may be a minute, an hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours (a day), a week, and similar. The device is implemented as a data acquisition system to detect physical characteristics of the user in the environment. Optionally, the device is a wearable activity monitor. Herein, the device is implemented using wearable technology. The wearable activity monitor enables users to track and monitor health metrics, such as, for example, number of steps walked, level of activity, type of activity, walking distance, heart rate, pattern of sleeping, and the like. The wearable activity monitor can be at least one of: worn as an accessory (such as, for example, a fitness watch), embedded in clothing (such as, for example, smart clothing), worn as jewellery (such as, for example, Motiv® ring), implanted in the user's body, tattooed on the user's skin. The device comprises at least one transceiver. The at least one transceiver is a combination of a transmitter and a receiver. The at least one transceiver can be selected based on a requirement of the device depending on at least one of: a bandwidth, a frequency, an efficiency, an electrical performance, a polarization effect, a size, an application, and the like. The at least one transceiver facilitates sending and receiving signals using an antenna either wirelessly. It will be appreciated that the at least one transceiver is employed to wirelessly communicate with external systems, for example, such as, mobile phones, communication networks, cloud-based services, and the like. Herein, the signals are composed of electromagnetic waves. Upon receiving the signals, the antenna converts the electromagnetic waves into electric signals. Herein, the signals are low energy signals that may be any one of: analog signals, digital signals. The at least one transceiver used in the device may consume a current less than a predefined value of current when in use. The predefined value of current may range, for example, from 10 milliamperes to 20 milliamperes. A technical effect of using the low energy signals by the at least one transceiver is that the device can be used for longer periods of time with low battery consumption. Examples of at least one transceiver may include, but are not limited to, Bluetooth®, cellular, LoRa®, Sigfox®, 4G, 5G, Long-Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M), Narrowband Internet of Things (Nb-IoT), and the like. Throughout the present disclosure, the term "processor" relates to a computational element that is operable to respond to and processes instructions that drive the device. Furthermore, the term "processor" may refer to one or more individual processors, processing devices, and various elements associated with a processing device that may be shared by other processing devices. Such processors, processing devices and elements may be arranged in various architectures for responding to and executing the steps of the system. The at least one transceiver is communicably coupled to the processor. The signals received by the at least one transceiver constitute the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver. The one or more antenna performance parameters measured by the processor can be in a form of at least one of: a single value, a list, a table, a text file, and the like. The one or more antenna performance parameters is indicative of numeric values of physical characteristics and electrical characteristics associated with the at least one transceiver. The one or more antenna performance parameters are received by the processor in real time, or in near-real time, when in use. Herein, the one or more antenna performance parameters may include, but is not limited to, an output power, a modulation index, a modulation depth, an extinction ratio, a temperature, a sensitivity ratio, and the like. The one or more antenna performance parameters associated with the at least one transceiver is used to describe a current condition of the at least one transceiver. The one or more antenna performance parameters can also be used to monitor and determine an extent of deviation of the current condition from a reference condition of corresponding one or more antenna performance parameters. The processor can monitor the one or more antenna performance parameters in a given time interval. The given time interval may be selected manually, automatically, or a combination of both. A technical benefit of measuring and monitoring the one or more antenna performance parameters is to at least one of: diagnose a presence of the antenna, properly tune the antenna. A technical effect of measuring the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver is to identify a change in the environment surrounding the device. The "voltage standing wave ratio" refers to a ratio of a voltage of the signals transmitted and reflected from the antenna of the at least one transceiver. The voltage standing wave ratio lies in a range from 1 up to infinity. As an example, the voltage standing wave ratio for an antenna of the at least one transceiver that may be poorly tuned because of immersion in water, may lie in a range from 2 up to 200. Typically, an ideal value of the voltage standing wave ratio lies below 2. The impedance relates a voltage and a current at an input of the antenna of the at least one transceiver. Herein, an input impedance of the antenna is compared with an output impedance of the at least one transceiver. Upon comparison, if the input impedance matches with the output impedance, then the return loss can be reduced at the input of the antenna. Hence, maximum power is transferred to the antenna, for an increased accuracy of the device. Alternately, if the input impedance mismatches with the output impedance, the signal is reflected, which reduces an amount of power transferred to the antenna, thereby reducing an efficiency of communication. Typically, the antenna of the at least one transceiver is tuned to have a certain impedance under normal conditions (i.e., in air). When the device is immersed in water, it results in a higher impedance than the impedance under normal conditions. Conversely, when the device is immersed in water, it results in a lower impedance than the impedance under normal conditions. In this regard, the impedance also depends on a type and / or configuration of the antenna in the at least one transceiver. For example, the impedance under normal conditions may be 50 ohms. When the device may be immersed in water, the impedance may be 80 ohms, which is higher than 50 ohms. Conversely, when the device may be immersed in water, the impedance may be 15 ohms, which is lower than 50 ohms. In both such cases, the processor may be configured to confirm that the device is immersed in water. Moreover, the "return loss" refers to a ratio of a proportion of signals rejected by the antenna of the at least one transceiver upon arrival to a proportion of signals accepted by the antenna. The "gain" refers to a ratio of power transmitted by the antenna of the at least one transceiver in a particular direction with a reference point. A unit of measurement of the gain is logarithmic decibel (dB) units. The "bandwidth" refers to a range of frequencies over which the at least one transceiver can operate in an efficient and an accurate manner. The "signal to noise ratio" refers to a ratio of an amplitude of the signal to an amplitude of other signals competing with the signal. The "received signal strength" is a measured value of a strength of the signal received at the antenna of the at least one transceiver. The received signal strength is determined by a transmission power of the signal, a distance between the transmitter and the receiver in the at least one transceiver, and an environment of the at least one transceiver. The "directivity" is a function of direction which is defined by a ratio of intensity of radiation of the antenna of the at least one transceiver in a specific direction to a mean value of intensity of radiation in all directions. The "transmitter power output" is an actual amount of power of the signals that the transmitter of the at least one transceiver produces at its output. The "tuning capacitance" is a value of capacitance to which a capacitor can be tuned to counterbalance the effects of passive elements of the at least one transceiver. These one or more antenna performance parameters are measured as the values of said antenna performance parameters change significantly when the device is at least partially in water. Then, the one or more antenna performance parameters are compared with a reference data corresponding to the one or more antenna performance parameters. The reference data is a known and correct measurement of the one or more antenna performance parameters, when the at least one transceiver is at least partially in water. The reference data is used to determine whether the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver lies within the predefined thresholds of the corresponding values in the reference data. When it is determined that the one or more antenna performance parameters lies within the predefined thresholds of the corresponding values in the reference data, the device is deemed to be at least partially in water (i.e., immersed in water). Optionally, the reference data is stored at a data repository communicably coupled to the processor, and wherein the processor is configured to receive the reference data from the data repository. The term "data repository" refers to hardware, software, firmware, or a combination of these for storing the reference data in an organized (namely, structured) manner, thereby, allowing for easy storage, access (namely, retrieval), updating and analysis of the measurement data. The data repository may be implemented as a memory of the device, a removable memory, a cloud-based database, or similar. The data repository can be implemented as one or more storage devices. A technical effect of using the data repository is that it provides an ease of storage and access of processing the measurement data. Optionally, the at least one sensor is communicably coupled to the processor, the at least one sensor being configured to generate sensor data indicative of an activity and / or a health metric associated with a bearer of the wearable device. Furthermore, the processor is configured to receive the sensor data from the at least one sensor and process the sensor data to determine details of the activity, the health metric, of the bearer. The bearer of the device can be a human being, an animal, and the like. Examples of the activity may include, walking, running, cycling, resting, sleeping, hiking, trekking, eating, drinking, and the like. The device in the present disclosure is able to generate sensor data by correctly identifying the environment (i.e., water) surrounding the device, and accurately displaying the health metric based on the activity performed by the bearer in that environment. Examples of health metric may include, but are not limited to, heart rate, sleep quality, body composition, number of steps, calorie burnt, blood pressure, and the like. Optionally, the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver and the sensor data from the at least one sensor are analysed to determine whether the bearer of the device is swimming. When the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver lies within the predefined thresholds of the corresponding values in the reference data, it indicates that the device is immersed in water. Herein, the predefined thresholds correspond to values of the one or more antenna performance parameters in the reference data when the device is immersed in water. The immersion of the antenna in water leads to detuning of the antenna. Simultaneously, when the sensor data generated by the at least one sensor lies within predefined ranges of corresponding values in the reference data, it indicates that the bearer of the device is immersed in water. Herein, the predefined ranges correspond to values of the sensor data in the reference data when the bearer is immersed in water. The predefined ranges of corresponding values of the sensor data are significantly different when the bearer is applying an exertion while being immersed in water, from the sensor data when the bearer of the device is applying an exertion while not being immersed in water. Hence, a combination of the one or more antenna performance parameters lying within the predefined thresholds, and the sensor data lying within the predefined ranges, is used to accurately measure the exertion level of the bearer of the device, and is helpful in distinguishing between the activity performed by the bearer of the device. Therefore, based on the combination, the health metric of the user is determined accordingly. Swimming is a cardiovascular exercise performed while being immersed in water, and shows a definite difference in the health metrics when compared to other activities such as running, walking, and the like. The health metrics, such as, calories burnt, heart rate, blood pressure, and the like are different when the bearer of the device is swimming than when performing the other activities Optionally, the at least one sensor comprises one or more of an accelerometer sensor, a gyroscope sensor, a magnetic sensor, an orientation sensor, a Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor, a barometric pressure sensor, a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor, a peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensor, a bioimpedance sensor, a galvanic skin response sensor, a skin temperature sensor, an ambient temperature sensor, an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor. A technical effect of combining the one or more of the at least one sensor is to accurately generate sensor data based on the activity being performed by the bearer. Herein, the at least one sensor may further comprise an inertial measuring unit, which constitutes a combination of at least one of: the accelerometer sensor, the gyroscope sensor, the magnetic sensor. The accelerometer is used to track movement along a direction. Specifically, a 3-axis accelerometer is used to track movement along every direction. Furthermore, the 3-axis accelerometer is used to sense at least one of: an inclination, a tilt, an orientation of the device with respect to a reference axis. The accelerometer sensor is configured to procure inertial measurement of acceleration, velocity and position of the device associated with the user. It will be appreciated that the acceleration of the device is used to interpret an effort being exerted by the user. When the accelerometer sensor is used in combination with the other at least one sensor, a sensor data collected and processed can be used to interpret calorific burn and a type of activity. Optionally, the gyroscope sensor is used to measure an orientation and a position of the device with respect to the reference axis. Furthermore, the gyroscope is used for navigation purposes, and / or measurement of angular velocity. Specifically, a 3-axis gyroscope sensor can be combined with the 3-axis accelerometer to provide an exemplary device with six degrees of freedom. The magnetic sensor, otherwise known as a magnetometer sensor, is used to measure a magnetic field corresponding to the x-axis, y-axis and the z-axis in micro-Tesla. Furthermore, the magnetic sensor is used to track movement and the direction at which the user is stationary. The GPS sensor is used to track a distance covered while doing activities such as running, swimming, cycling, and the like. Furthermore, the GPS sensor is able to provide navigation. Optionally, the barometric pressure sensor, commonly known as an altimeter, is able to provide data regarding an altitude of the user. The barometric pressure sensor senses changes in height using atmospheric pressure, and a calorie count of the user changes based on elevation. The photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor is an optical sensor that monitors heart rate using light emitting diode (LED), thereby measuring changes in volume of blood during circulation throughout the body of the bearer. The ECG sensor is used to detect minute electrical impulse sent by the heart during every heartbeat. This sensor helps to determine any immediate defect in the heart, such as, for example, a heart murmur. The SpO2 sensor is used measure oxygen levels in the blood of the bearer by examining a colour of the blood using relative reflection of infrared light from the blood. Thereafter, a variation of the colour of the blood is examined based on a heartbeat of the bearer, thereby estimating an SpO2 value of the bearer of the device. The bioimpedance sensor is used to measure sleep, heart rate, respiration rate, water level, and the like, by delivering a small amount of current to a skin of the bearer, and measure a resistance provided by the skin. The galvanic skin response sensor is an optical sensor used to measure pulse, thereby measuring the heart rate of the bearer of the device. The galvanic skin response sensor uses light on the skin to measure a rate at which the blood is pumped through at least one capillary of the bearer. The skin temperature sensor is used to know which activity leads to a certain rise in a temperature of the bearer's body. Furthermore, the sensor is able to determine an increase in overall temperature of the body corresponding to the activity of the bearer, and when the activity needs to be stopped to prevent any health complication. The ambient temperature sensor is used to determine a temperature of the bearer's body, and is helpful in knowing an amount of heat dispensed by the body when the bearer is performing a strenuous activity. The ambient light sensor is used to change a brightness of a display of the device as per availability of light surrounding the device. The ambient light sensor is used to automatically change the brightness, thereby saving battery life. The proximity sensor is used to know a proximity of the bearer to the device. In case the device is not in use and not worn by the bearer, this sensor enables the device to save battery by not turning on the display of the device. A second aspect of the invention provides a method comprising sending and / or receiving signals via at least one transceiver in a device; measuring and monitoring one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver, wherein the one or more antenna performance parameters comprise one or more of: voltage standing wave ratio, an impedance, a return loss, a gain, a bandwidth, a signal to noise ratio (SNR), a received signal strength, a directivity, a transmitter power output, and a tuning capacitance; and determining, based on a change in the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver, whether the device is immersed in water. Various embodiments and variants disclosed above apply mutatis mutandis to the method. Optionally, the method further comprises generating, using at least one sensor, a sensor data indicative of an activity and / or a health metric associated with a bearer of the device. Optionally, the method further comprises analysing the one or more antenna performance parameters of the at least one transceiver and the sensor data from the at least one sensor to determine whether the bearer of the device is swimming. Optionally, the method further comprises measuring calorific burn and / or monitoring a stroke count of the bearer when it is determined that the bearer is swimming. The calorific burn of the bearer while swimming is higher than the calorific burn of the bearer while doing other activities, such as, running, walking, and the like. Furthermore, the knowledge that the bearer is swimming is also helpful in distinguishing that a movement of hands while swimming is a stroke count, and is not to be confused with the movement of hands while running, climbing, and the like. The measurement of the calorific burn and / or monitoring the stroke count is procured at the given interval of time. A third aspect of the invention provides a computer program product comprising a non-transitory machine-readable data storage medium having stored thereon program instructions that, when accessed by a processing device, cause the processing device to execute steps of a method of the second aspect. Various embodiments and variants disclosed above apply mutatis mutandis to the computer program product.
