Description

TECHNICAL FIELD The present disclosure relates to scheduling of vehicle notifications. Aspects of the invention relate to a control system for scheduling notifications for an operator of a vehicle, to a method, to a computer program product and to a vehicle. BACKGROUND Modern vehicles, such as automobiles incorporate a large number of electronic systems that may provide notifications, or messages, to a driver or operator of the vehicle. Such notifications may originate from a variety of sources, for example notifications may be audio, communication, or vehicle state related. When a notification is presented to a driver, it may place a cognitive demand on the driver to process and understand the information conveyed by the notification, and to determine an appropriate course of action to take in response. If a driver becomes distracted by a notification being presented, there may be increased risk of driver error. It is an aim of the present invention to address one or more of the disadvantages associated with the prior art. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Aspects and embodiments of the invention provide a control system, a method for scheduling notifications for an operator of a vehicle, a computer program product, and a vehicle as claimed in the appended claims. According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a control system for scheduling notifications for an operator of a vehicle, the control system comprising one or more processors collectively configured to obtain, from one or more sensors of the vehicle, sensor input corresponding to an external environment of the vehicle, calculate a first attention value based on the sensor input, the first attention value representative of an attention level required for the operator of the vehicle to monitor the external environment, monitor one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle, calculate a second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle, the second attention value representative of an attention level of the driver, calculate an attentional state value based on the first and second attention values, receive a notification for presentation to the operator of the vehicle, and delay presentation of the notification to the operator of the vehicle based on the attentional state value. Advantageously, the control system is able to determine a cognitive capacity of the driver, in the form of an attentional state value, that takes in to account both the demand on the driver’s attention due to the environment around the vehicle, for example due to the road conditions or the actions of other road users, and also the driver’s attention status, for example whether the driver is tired or distracted. The timing of the presentation of a notification to the driver can then be based on the attentional state, resulting in delaying the presentation of a notification received when the available attention of the driver is required by the driving demand. Thus, the control system is able to avoid distracting the driver with new notifications when the driver demand is high and critical as compared to the drivers capability to deal with those demands. The control system comprises one or more controllers collectively comprising at least one electronic processor having an electrical input for receiving an input signal; and at least one memory device electrically coupled to the at least one electronic processor and having instructions stored therein; and wherein the at least one electronic processor is configured to access the at least one memory device and execute the instructions thereon so as to: obtain, from one or more sensors of the vehicle, sensor input corresponding to an external environment of the vehicle; calculate a first attention value based on the sensor input, the first attention value representative of an attention level required for the operator of the vehicle to monitor the external environment; monitor one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle; calculate a second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle, the second attention value representative of an attention level of the driver, calculate an attentional state value based on the first and second attention values; receive a notification for presentation to the operator of the vehicle; and delay presentation of the notification to the operator of the vehicle based on the attentional state value. In an embodiment, the one or more processors may be collectively configured to obtain an attention value associated with the notification, and wherein presentation of the notification is to be delayed in response to the attentional state value being less than the attention value associated with the notification. Advantageously, different types of notification may be associated with different levels of demand on the driver’s attention caused by the notification. Allowing presentation of notifications considered not to require significant attention from the driver at times when the driver’s attentional state is low, but delaying notifications that require a greater level of attention until the driver’s attentional state value is higher, indicating the driver has the available capacity to deal with the notification safely. Furthermore, urgent or important notifications that require immediate action could be associated with a low attention value, ensuring that these notifications are not delayed. In an embodiment, the one or more processors may be collectively configured to obtain further sensor input and update the first attention value based on the further sensor input, monitor one or more further actions of the operator of the vehicle and update the second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle, and update the attentional state value based on the updated first and second attention values. Advantageously, the control system may continuously monitor the environment and driver and update the attentional state value to reflect the current situation. In an embodiment, the one or more processors may be collectively configured to, in response to the attentional state value being greater than the attention value associated with the notification, present the notification to the operator of the vehicle. Advantageously, when the attentional state value is greater than the attention value associated with the notification, indicating that the driver has the available capacity to deal with the notification safely, the notification may then be delivered. In an embodiment, the one or more processors may be collectively configured to monitor the one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle by monitoring, using an interior sensor of the vehicle, a gaze of the operator of the vehicle. Advantageously, the attention level of the driver can be determined by monitoring the gaze of the driver, for example based on the amount of time the driver looks away from the road ahead of the vehicle. In an embodiment, the sensor input may comprise information indicating at least one of a road type; a traffic level; a vehicle speed; a vehicle acceleration; and a current steering wheel angle. Advantageously, the attention level required for operation of the vehicle can take into account the road conditions (e.g. weather), road type (e.g. motorway, roundabout), speed of the vehicle, the lateral and or longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle (e.g. to determine whether the vehicle is braking, sliding, etc.) and / or current steering input, to accurately gauge the cognitive load being placed on the driver to safely operate the vehicle. In an embodiment, the one or more processors may be collectively configured to determine that the attentional state value is below a predefined threshold attention value, and in response to determining that the attentional state value is below the predefined threshold attention value, generate an alert to the operator of the vehicle. Advantageously, if the control system determines that the driver’s attentional state is critically low, indicating that the driver may be struggling to provide sufficient attention to meet the requirements of operating the vehicle in the current conditions, an alert may be provided, for example to indicate to the driver to consider taking a break from driving at the next service station. According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of scheduling notifications for an operator of a vehicle, the method comprising obtaining, from one or more sensors of the vehicle, sensor input corresponding to an external environment of the vehicle, calculating a first attention value based on the sensor input, the first attention value representative of an attention level required for the operator of the vehicle to monitor the external environment, monitoring one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle, calculating a second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle, the second attention value representative of an attention level of the driver, calculating an attentional state value based on the first and second attention values, receiving a notification for presentation to the operator of the vehicle, and delaying presentation of the notification to the operator of the vehicle based on the attentional state value. Advantageously, the method operates to determine a capacity of the driver, in the form of the attentional state value, that takes in to account both the demand on the drivers attention due to the environment around the vehicle, for example due to the road conditions or the actions of other road users, and also the driver’s attention status, for example whether the driver is tired or distracted. The timing of the presentation of a notification to the driver can then be based on the attentional state value, resulting in delaying the presentation of a notification received when the available attention of the driver is required by the driving demand. Thus, the method is able to avoid distracting the driver with new notifications when the driver demand is high and critical as compared to the drivers capability to deal with those demands. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise obtaining an attention value associated with the notification, determining that the attentional state value is less than the attention value associated with the notification, and wherein delaying presentation of the notification is in response to determining that the attentional state value is less than the attention value. Advantageously, different notification types may be associated with different levels of demand on the drivers attention caused by the notification. Allowing presentation of notifications considered not to require significant attention from the driver at times when the driver’s attentional state is low, but delaying notifications that require a greater level of attention until the driver’s attentional state is higher, indicating the driver has the available capacity to deal with the notification safely. Furthermore, urgent or important notifications that require immediate action could be associated with a low attention value, ensuring that these notifications are not delayed. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise obtaining further sensor input and updating the first attention value based on the further sensor input, monitoring one or more further actions of the operator of the vehicle and updating the second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle, and update the attentional state value based on the updated first and second attention values. Advantageously, the method may continuously monitor the environment and driver and update the attentional state value to reflect the current situation. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise, in response to the attentional state value being greater than the attention value associated with the notification, presenting the notification to the operator of the vehicle. Advantageously, when the attentional state value is greater than the attention value associated with the notification, indicating that the driver has the available capacity to deal with the notification safely, the notification may then be delivered. In an embodiment, monitoring the one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle may further comprises monitoring a gaze of the operator of the vehicle. In an embodiment, the sensor input may comprise at least one of a road type; a traffic level; a vehicle speed; a vehicle acceleration; and a current steering wheel angle. Advantageously, the attention level of the driver can be determined by monitoring the gaze of the driver, for example based on the amount of time the driver looks away from the road ahead of the vehicle. Furthermore, the attention level required for operation of the vehicle can take into account the road conditions (e.g. weather), road type (e.g. motorway, roundabout), speed of the vehicle, and / or current steering input, to accurately gauge the cognitive load being placed on the driver to safely operate the vehicle. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise determining that the attentional state value is below a predefined threshold attention value, and in response to determining that the attentional state value is below the predefined threshold attention value, generating an alert to the operator of the vehicle. 4 Advantageously, if the method determines that the drivers attentional state is critically low, indicating that the driver may be struggling to provide sufficient attention to meet the requirements of operating the vehicle in the current conditions, an alert may be provided, for example to indicate to the driver to consider taking a break from driving at the next service station. According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a computer program product comprising computer program instructions that when executed on a processor of a control system of a vehicle including at least one environment sensor causes the control system to perform a method as described above. According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle comprising a control system as described above. Within the scope of this application it is expressly intended that the various aspects, embodiments, examples and alternatives set out in the preceding paragraphs, in the claims and / or in the following description and drawings, and in particular the individual features thereof, may be taken independently or in any combination. That is, all embodiments and / or features of any embodiment can be combined in any way and / or combination, unless such features are incompatible. The applicant reserves the right to change any originally filed claim or file any new claim accordingly, including the right to amend any originally filed claim to depend from and / or incorporate any feature of any other claim although not originally claimed in that manner. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS One or more embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a system suitable for implementing embodiments of the invention; Figure 2 shows a vehicle including the control system of Figure 1 in accordance with embodiments; Figure 3 illustrates a method to implement intelligent notification scheduling according to embodiments of the invention; Figure 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method according to embodiments of the invention; and Figure 5 illustrates a device comprising a computer-readable storage medium coupled in accordance with embodiments. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Modern vehicles include a range of electronic systems that can generate notifications and messages to the driver. Such messages may originate from a variety of sources, for example notifications may relate to vehicle state information generated by onboard systems and diagnostics, or messages received from external sources via a communication network, e.g. short message service (SMS) messages or other notifications received via a mobile phone connected with the vehicle’s systems, etc. 5 Understanding and generating an appropriate response to such notifications whilst driving the vehicle may place increased levels of cognitive and visual demand on the driver which may increase the risk of driver error. In particular, providing a notification at an inopportune moment when the cognitive and / or visual demand placed on the driver whilst driving is already high, for example when negotiating a difficult junction or due to the actions of other road users, risks dividing the attention of the driver at a critical point in time where focus is needed on the driving task. One way of addressing this problem might be to simply stop or delay a notification received during a period of high driving demand, for example based on environmental sensing of potential hazards in the vehicle’s surroundings. However, such an approach does not take account of the ability and attentiveness of the driver and may unnecessarily delay notifications when an experienced driver would have sufficient capacity to receive and process the notification. Alternatively, such a system may fail to delay a notification for a less confident or tired driver that may have insufficient capacity even during a period of moderate driving demand. According to embodiments of the invention, an intelligent scheduling system is provided that uses a number of inputs to determine the drivers attentional capacity that may be representative of the available cognitive capacity of the driver while operating the vehicle. In particular, the capacity estimation takes into account both the demand on the driver’s attention to operate the vehicle in the current environment surrounding the vehicle, and also the status of the driver, e.g. whether the driver’s attention is low due to being occupied with some non-driving activity or fatigued. When a notification is received to be presented to the driver, if the attention state estimation indicates that the driver may not have sufficient available attention to process the notification, or message, the presentation of the notification to the driver is delayed to allow the driver to focus on the driving activity during a period of high driver demand compared to the ability of the driver at that time. With reference to Figure 1, there is illustrated a control system 100 for a vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The control system 100 may receive, or otherwise obtain, a notification 102 to be presented to the operator of the vehicle and comprises at least one first sensor 104 for monitoring an environment around the vehicle; at least one second sensor for monitoring the operator of the vehicle (i.e. the driver) 106; and one or more controller 108. The at least one first sensor 104 and the at least one second sensor 106 are coupled to the one or more controller 108 and provide sensor data and vehicle trajectory data, respectively, to the one or more controller 108. The control system 100 as illustrated in Figure 1 comprises one controller 108, although it will be appreciated that this is merely illustrative. The controller 108 comprises processing means 110 and memory means 112. The processing means 110 may be one or more electronic processing device 110 which operably executes computer-readable instructions. The memory means 112 may be one or more memory device 112. The memory means 112 is electrically coupled to the processing means 110. The memory means 112 is configured to store instructions, and the processing means 110 is configured to access the memory means 112 and execute the instructions stored thereon. The control system 100 provides an output 114, such as a presentation of a notification to the driver. According to some embodiments, the at least one first sensor 104 may provide sensor data indicative of at least one of a road type; a traffic level; a vehicle speed; a vehicle acceleration, which may be a lateral acceleration or a longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle; and a current steering wheel angle which can be used to determine an attention level required for the driver to operate the vehicle in the current conditions. According to some embodiments, the at least one second sensor 106 may monitor a gaze of the driver, touch operations, positions of hand, drivers conversation, body posture to determine how much attention the driver is giving to the environment around the vehicle, and / or to indicate if the driver is distracted or tired. Figure 2 illustrates a vehicle 200 including the control system 100 in accordance with embodiments of the invention. According to embodiments, the at least one first sensor 102 may comprise part of an active safety feature, advanced driving assistance feature, or other system present on the vehicle 200, capable of perceiving the environment around the vehicle. For example, vehicles may be provided with active safety features such as emergency brake assistance or active lane keeping which attempt to detect hazardous situations and automatically initiate action to mitigate the hazard. Thus, embodiments of the invention may leverage features of other systems present on the vehicle to provide sensing of the environment around the vehicle. Similarly, the at least one second sensor 106 may comprise part of a driver detection system that operates to check the driver’s status for example monitoring a drivers eyes and gaze to detect when the driver closes their eyes for a duration of time and touch operations, positions of hand, drivers conversation, body posture that might indicate tiredness or fatigue. Thus, embodiments of the invention may use the existing systems for sensing the environment and road status to calculate the current or future predicted driving demand based on the vehicle’s surroundings. The driving demand calculation may also take account of an automation level of the vehicle, i.e. the presence of selfdriving features. Furthermore, an existing driver monitoring system may be used to calculate the attention level of the driver (attention given by the driver on driving task). These data will be then fed into an attention state estimation system, provided by control system 100, which checks if the driver has sufficient attentional capacity to receive a message or notification. Accordingly, the system will decide whether to provide notification messages or not as output 114. According to some embodiments, if it is determined that the driver attention level is low relative to the current or future predicted driving demand, i.e. the driver’s attention capacity is critically low, a warning or notification may be provided to the driver to suggest they concentrate on operating the vehicle or look for an opportunity to take a break from driving. Figure 3 illustrates a method 300 to implement intelligent notification scheduling according to embodiments of the invention that can be implemented using the control system 100 illustrated in Figure 1. According to the illustrated method 300, vehicle and environment sensing 302 is performed by the at least one first sensor 104 and the sensor input is used in block 304 to determine a first attention value that is representative of a driver attention level required for the operator of the vehicle 200 to monitor the external environment. In block 306, driver sensing is performed using the at least one second sensor 106 to monitor actions of the operator of the vehicle 200. The monitored actions are then used in block 308 to calculate an attention value that is representative of the current attentional state of the driver. The first and second attention values are received by attention state estimation system 310 and used to calculate the drivers current attentional state 312. The drivers current attentional state 312 provides a measure of the available attention capacity of the driver taking into account the driving demand. In some embodiments, a determination 314 is made to determine whether the driver’s attention level, based on the attentional state value 312, is critically low. For example, the determination may be based on a comparison of the drivers current attentional state 312 with a threshold value. If it is determined that the driver’s attention level is critically low, an alert may be provided 316 to the driver. Further according to method 300, at block 318 a notification, or message, is received to be provided to the driver of the vehicle 200. In response to receiving the notification, a determination 320 is made to determine whether the attentional state value 312 indicates that the driver has sufficient available attention to processes the notification 318, for example if the drivers current attentional state is greater than a predetermined threshold value. If it is determined that the driver has sufficient available attention, the notification 318 is provided to the driver at block 322. However, if it is determined that the driver does not have sufficient available attention, for example the drivers current attentional state is less than the predetermined threshold value, the presentation of the notification is delayed at block 324. In this case, the presentation of the notification may be delayed for a predetermined period of time during which the first and second attention values may be updated based on further sensor input and then the determination 320 of whether the driver has sufficient available attention to receive the notification made again using an updated attentional state value 312. That is, the attentional state value 312 may be continually updated while the driver is operating the vehicle 200 and the latest updated value of the attentional state value used in the determination 320 of whether the driver has sufficient available attention to receive the notification at the time the determination is made. According to some embodiments, the determination 320 of whether the driver has sufficient available attention to receive the notification may be based on a comparison of the attentional state value with a predetermined threshold value. In some embodiments, different notifications may be associated with a different attention threshold and presentation of a particular notification may be delayed if the current attentional state value 312 is less than the attention value associated with that particular notification. For example, a notification relating to a critical malfunction, or safety related vehicle issue, may be provided with a very low available attention threshold to ensure that such notifications are always delivered to the driver in a timely manner. Non-critical messages, such as a service interval reminder, may be provided with relatively high available attention thresholds and therefore only provided to the driver when the driving demand is low and the driver has a good attention level. Figure 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method 400 according to embodiments of the invention. According to the method 400, at block 402 sensor input corresponding to an external environment of the vehicle 200 is obtained from one or more first sensors 104 of the vehicle 200. Based on the sensor data, a first attention value is calculated 404, the first attention value representative of an attention level required for the operator of the vehicle to monitor the external environment. At block 406, one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle 200 is monitored using the one or more second sensors 106. Based on the monitored actions, a second attention value is calculated 408, the second attention value representative of an attention level of the driver. Based on the first attention value and the second attention value, an attentional state value 312 is calculated 410. As noted above, the method may include continuously performing blocks 402 to 410 of the method 400 to update the attentional state value 312 in real, or near real-time. At block 412, a notification is received for presentation to the driver. Based on the attentional state value 312, presentation of the notification is delayed at block 414, for example in the case that the attentional state value indicates that the driver’s attention is required to handle the driving demand. Certain methods and systems as described herein may be implemented by one or more processors that processes program code that is retrieved from a non-transitory storage medium. Figure 5 shows an example 500 of a device comprising a computer-readable storage medium 530 coupled to at least one processor 520. The computer-readable media 530 can be any media that can contain, store, or maintain programs and data for use by or in connection with an instruction execution system. Computer-readable media can comprise any one of many physical media such as, for example, electronic, magnetic, optical, electromagnetic, or semiconductor media. More specific examples of suitable machine-readable media include, but are not limited to, a hard drive, a random-access memory (RAM), a read-only memory (ROM), an erasable programmable read-only memory, or a portable disc. In Figure 5, the computer-readable storage medium comprises program code to perform a method corresponding to the example shown in Figure 4, that is: obtain 402 sensor input corresponding to an external environment of the vehicle; calculate 404 a first attention value based on the sensor input; monitor 406 one or more actions of the operator of the vehicle; calculate 408 a second attention value based on the monitored actions of the operator of the vehicle; calculate 410 an attentional state value based on the first and second attention values; receive 412 a notification for presentation to the operator of the vehicle; and delay 414 presentation of the notification to the operator of the vehicle based on the attentional state value. It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications can be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the present application.
