Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a sleeved bib, a garment as worn by a baby or young child to protect them and their clothes from accidentally spilt drinks and dropped food, and the materials and the construction method of the bib. Many different types of baby bib exist but can be predominantly described as two distinct types. The simpler and smaller type are plain bibs (without sleeves), which cover mainly the front of the body, the chest, the shoulders and around the neck. The other type are bibs with sleeves, which are similar to the aforementioned bib but have sleeves included to protect the arms. A sleeved bib with a long body area is called a coverall and can be used to also protect both the baby and the high-chair from spilt food and drink mess. Plain bibs and sleeved bibs can be found made in a wide variety of materials. Some materials are preferred for their particular properties and some bibs can be found with a mixture of those different materials to achieve an optimized mix of those properties to achieve a better functioning bib. However, a mixture of two or more materials, in particular, would be ideal for a sleeved bib and that is the nature of the present invention. Firstly, it is necessary to list the common materials used to manufacture plain bibs and sleeved bibs and highlight their properties to clearly identify the opportunity and benefit of the present invention. Common materials include: cotton (thin, soft feel, natural material, absorbent and not waterproof), bamboo (thin, soft feel, natural material, absorbent and not waterproof), polyester fleece (medium thickness, soft feel, man-made material, absorbent and not waterproof), woven and knitted polyester (thin, soft feel, man-made material, absorbent and typically not waterproof), polyester and cotton mix (thin, soft feel, absorbent and not waterproof), the previous materials and with a very thin polyurethane laminate layer bonded to it on either the front or the back (reasonably soft feel, not absorbent if on the front and is waterproof), PVA or PEVA sheet (thin, reasonably soft / firm feel and is waterproof but can be weak), neoprene (thick, soft feel, is both absorbent and waterproof), injection moulded rubber (thick, firmer and more solid 22 04 26 feel, not absorbent, is wipe clean but can feel clammy and is waterproof), injection moulded plastic (thick, hard, uncomfortable, not absorbent and is waterproof) and injection moulded or press / compression moulded silicone (thick, solid feel, flexible, not absorbent, can feel slightly clammy and is waterproof). The latter injection moulded or press / compression moulded silicone (i.e. a type of man-made rubber) bibs have a benefit that, if they have a pocket on the front, as is typical, the pocket is formed as a 3D shape in the moulding process and generally remains like that for the duration of the bib’s life, therefore is always ready to catch food. The other materials of the plain bibs mentioned beforehand generally have either flat on the front or partly flat on the front pockets which do not catch food effectively. Neoprene bibs, namely the Ultrabibs made by Bibetta Limited, tend to have fold-out from the back to the front pockets to catch food which work well but requires the customer to fold the flat pocket from the back to the front to create the large 3D open pocket shape, which may not be obvious to some users. Moulded silicone and plastic plain bibs also have an advantage that they typically have a smooth surface which is easy to wipe clean, as opposed to a bib made with a woven, knitted or fleece type fabric or with a fabric surface. Moulded silicone plain bibs often have mushroom dome type connectors moulded into the silicone which, whilst are often fiddly and awkward to connect, do offer the benefit of having the fixing method moulded in with the rest of the product, which enables a cost saving in production. It is down to customer preference which bib they like and made in which material. But a current trend and desire is for moulded silicone bibs because they are waterproof, easy to wipe clean, not absorbent, are supplied in a 3D form with the pocket already formed into the desired pocket shape on the front of the bib and, whilst they are made with a solid material (normally about 2-3 mm thick), having a reasonably firm structure and feeling slightly clammy, they can feel reasonably flexible and therefore reasonably comfortable to wear and hence are a popular choice with parents due to the overall positive mix of benefits. However, the problem with moulded silicone bibs is that the material is solid silicone rubber and hence has such a firm structure making it only suitable for the plain bib format, i.e. just covering the front, shoulder and neck part of the bib. It is not suitable for the sleeved parts of a sleeved bib format because it would make the sleeve parts too 22 04 26 bulky and inflexible for the baby or child to wear, making it difficult to maneuver their cutlery and food to their mouth, hindering their shoulder, arm, elbow and wrist movements, furthermore they would most likely become too hot and sweaty wearing a bib made with non-breathable, solid silicone sleeves and, tactile-wise, children would find it too clammy to wear and parents would most likely find it too clammy to handle such a large piece of silicone. Also, it would be very difficult and expensive to mould a sleeved bib made all-in-one with silicone as it would be such a large and complex three dimensional shape which would require a large, expensive and complex tool with several moving parts to achieve the finished shape. Because it is not technically viable or attractive to manufacture a fully moulded silicone sleeved bib with solid silicone sleeve material, due to the solid silicone sleeve material being too bulky, awkward and cumbersome for movement and too hot, sweaty and uncomfortable to wear and it being expensive and technically complex to mould, it means companies or brands selling bibs often are forced to use different materials to create a range of a plain bib and a sleeved bib, which can end up looking disjointed and confusing for the customer and means companies need to source their two different types of bibs from two different types of manufacturers who specialize in the different materials. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that many other baby feeding products are commonly made with silicone, such as bowls, plates, cutlery and cups and yet no sleeved silicon bib has yet been manufactured to match these existing ranges of other silicone baby products due to silicone being so unsuitable to make a sleeved bib due to the aforementioned reasons. An object of this invention is to provide a sleeved bib which has all the advantages of the popular, moulded silicone, plain bib for the body area (so it is waterproof, easy to wipe clean, not absorbent, has a full 3D pocket shape at all times, has a firm structure but is reasonably soft feel and flexible and can have moulded-in mushroom and keyhole type fastenings) in conjunction with the advantages of different materials for the sleeves, which have better comfort, flexibility, softness, breathability and temperature control to allow the child to maneuver their cutlery and food to their mouth easily and naturally in a 22 04 26 comfortable manner without getting hot or sweaty and yet still be able to be wiped clean easily for the optimum parent and child experience, and also that would enable the manufacturing brand / companies to manufacture the sleeved bib in an easy and cost effective way, and furthermore be able to match a plain moulded silicone bib with a sleeved moulded silicone bib and other silicone baby products such as silicone bowls, plates, cutlery and cups to create a predominantly coherent family look range with well-matched product materials with resultant well matching look, feel, flexibility and thickness of the main materials. Accordingly, this invention provides a Raglan sleeved bib, i.e. whereby the seams between the sleeves and the body part are continuous and at an angle from the armpit to the collar, which is made with a moulded silicone body part (which covers all or part of the front of the body, the chest, shoulders and neck) combined with and connected, preferably by sewing, to a different, thinner and more flexible material for the sleeves for ease of manufacture and cost effectiveness and enabling optimum comfort and flexibility in the shoulder, arm, elbow and wrist area which will allow the child to maneuver their cutlery and food to their mouth with ease, with good softness, breathability and temperature control and yet which will have a close aesthetic match, hand feel and quality to a plain (sleeveless) moulded silicone bib, and other silicone baby feeding items, to create a coherent product range which all incorporate silicone material. It is preferable for the sleeve material to be at least made all or partly with fabric and to be as soft and flexible as possible. Ideally it would have a waterproofing protection such as a thin lamination of polyurethane either on the top, inside (between two layers of fabric) or the underside of the fabric for waterproofing, whereby a wipe clean top surface would be preferable for easy cleaning. A fabric material which is a breathable and stretchy, such as a knitted polyester jersey, on the underside against the skin’s surface would be ideal for good comfort for the baby / child, although any aforementioned flexible fabrics and materials can be used for the sleeves, except solid silicone, solid rubber and solid plastic. Sheet plastics can be used for the sleeves, such as PVA, but are not preferable due to their lack of breathability and stiff nature. Other fabrics are possible for 22 04 26 the sleeves including nylon, wool, Tencel Lyocell, bamboo, hemp, mixed or recycled fibres and silk for example. It is preferable for the sleeve material to be sewn onto the moulded silicone body part. Although silicone is a solid rubber it is soft enough to allow a sewing needle through. One or more sew lines can be used. The sleeves would typically be sewn on over the front, top and back of the shoulders and under the armpit and around the sides of the torso although not all those areas need to be sewn to the silicone part. The seam is typically located on the inside of the garment to make the finished garment look neat and so is not normally visible, but it could be placed on the outside if desired or some sew lines could be visible on the outside. The sleeves could be sewn on permanently or they could be removable, such as using press-studs or hook and loop type fixing materials added to enable removal of the sleeves. A third, fourth or further materials may be added to complete the sleeved bib construction. Binding can be added to finish some or all of the edges. Various methods of neatly ending the binding are shown in the accompanying drawings of the present invention. The sleeved bib can be put onto the child and connected together at the back with a variety of fastening methods including, but not limited to, press-studs or mushroom dome type connectors moulded into the silicone (for good cost savings and to match current plain silicone bib’s common fastenings), press studs added onto any materials, a ribbon tie fastening, buttons or hook and loop type fixing materials sewn onto any materials. It is preferable for the sleeve material to be sewn or attached onto the moulded silicone body part in a Raglan style shape, although other join lines are possible including more or less silicone around the neck area and shoulder area and around the waist area or over the shoulders and down the back. It is preferable for the sleeve material to be sewn or attached onto the moulded silicone body part with straight sewn lines for ease, convenience and cost efficiencies. Other connecting shapes, designs and techniques are possible including Halter-neck styles, a sleeved coverall bib shape and those shown in, but not limited to, the accompanying drawings of the present invention. 22 04 26 It is preferable for the moulded silicone body part to have a pocket on the front and for it to be a large, 3D shaped pocket to catch dropped food and drink. It could have a pocket on the back which is folded to the front. It could have two pockets with one moulded on the front and one moulded on the back which also applies to a plain bib (with no sleeves). The entire sleeved or plain bib could be reversible. It could be made with one or more flat, die-cut pieces of silicone sheet. The pocket could be a separate part sewn, glued, pressed, welded or attached another way to the front or the back of the main body part. It is preferable for the moulded silicone body part or sleeve parts to have design connections to other silicone products in the same product range for increased product and brand range coherence, such as visual, tactile or physical connections to teethers, toys, games, education items, cups, plates, bowls or cutlery, such as including fixing points to connect silicone cutlery to the silicone sleeved bib to prevent the baby dropping the cutlery on the floor. Some plain (non-sleeved) bibs are available made with moulded silicone for the lower half of the bib (with the 3D pocket shape moulded in on the front) sewn horizontally across the front (across the sternum area) to an upper half made with fabric (with either poppers or hook and loop fastenings) for the neck part to enable the aforementioned mixture of benefits of using two different materials. However, it is not obvious for a larger and more complex sleeved bib garment to be constructed in a Raglan sleeve construction style, with an injection or compression moulded silicone part, with a moulded pocket on the front and sewn around the shoulder and armpit areas onto waterproof fabric sleeve parts, as the parts, materials, functions and shapes are so different in origin and have very different properties, yet in combination and construction they create a very useful solution. As shown in FIGURE 15, the sleeved bib is made up of a moulded silicone body part 1 with a large, open pocket 3 moulded onto the front and has thin, flexible, waterproofed, fabric material sleeves 2 attached on each side by sewing along a seam 4 in an over-the-shoulder style construction. As shown in FIGURE 17, the sleeved bib is made up of a moulded silicone body part 1 with a large, open pocket 3 moulded onto the front and has thin, flexible, waterproofed, fabric material sleeves 2 attached on each side by sewing along a seam 4 in an over-the-shoulder style construction. As shown in FIGURE 18, the sleeved bib is made up of a moulded silicone body part 1 and has thin, flexible, waterproofed, fabric material sleeves 2 attached on each side by sewing along a seam 4 in an over-the-shoulder style construction. Claims
1. A sleeved bib constructed in a Raglan style, such that the join line between the sleeve part and the middle part is continuous from the armpit to the collar, which is made with a moulded silicone rubber part for covering the majority of the front of the torso area combined with a different material that makes up the sleeves.
2. A sleeved bib according to Claim 1 where the sleeve material is made with a soft, comfortable and flexible material including woven fabric, a knitted fabric, a jersey fabric, a sheet material, a material that is waterproofed and / or where material is polyester material laminated with polyurethane.
3. A sleeved bib or non-sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has a pocket moulded onto the front of the silicone part.
4. A sleeved bib or non-sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has a pocket moulded onto the back of the silicone part.
5. A sleeved bib or non-sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has a pocket moulded onto both the back and the front.
6. A sleeved bib or non-sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has a pocket attached onto, or moulded into, the back of the silicone part and which can be folded to the front.
7. A sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which is reversible.
8. A sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim where the bib is finished with binding.
9. A sleeved bib or non-sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has fixing points or fastening details to connect other related items, namely feeding related items, or where the fixing points or fastening details are moulded onto the silicone or integrated into the fabric part.
10. A sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim which has hook and loop, poppers, ribbon tie or button type fastening details.
11. A sleeved bib according to any preceding Claim sleeved bib which is made with an injection moulded or press / compression moulded rubber or plastic or bio-plastic part, covering the majority of the front of the torso area, combined with a different material that makes up the sleeves.
12. A sleeved bib which is made with a moulded silicone rubber part for covering the majority of the front of the torso area combined with a different material that makes up the sleeves in an over-the-shoulder style construction.22 04 26
