Closing ring applicator tool for open head drums

Abstract

A closing ring applicator tool 100 comprising a set of grippers 28 (see figure 3) configured to engage a drum closing ring 10 at spaced intervals around the outer circumference of the ring 10, the grippers 28 are inwardly mobile towards one another, substantially parallel to the plane of the drum closing ring 10 to reduce its circumference and bring the ends of the closing ring 10 together. Some or all of the grippers 28 may comprise any one or all of a roller, linear bearing, friction reducing facing, or deflectable mounting (28a,b,c) so that friction between the closing 10 ring and the grippers 28 is reduced as it is closed. One of or a set of the grippers 28 may be placed on one side of a closing latch mechanism 12 with another gripper or set of grippers 28 placed on the other side of the mechanism with an actuator to move the one gripper or set of grippers towards the other one or set of grippers. The tool may be driven by a hand actuated mechanism, such as a toggle mechanism 48a where the mechanism 48a may be arranged to self-lock the grippers 28 in a closed position.
