Abstract

A control system 300 controls a heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a vehicle. The control system comprises one or more processors 320 collectively configured to: receive a measurement of at least one vehicle cabin parameter (e.g. cabin temperature, cabin carbon dioxide level, cabin humidity, cabin particulate level); and determine, using explicit model predictive control, a level of air recirculation which maintains the at least one vehicle cabin parameter within a predetermined range. The explicit model predictive control takes the received measurement of the at least one vehicle cabin parameter as an input and sets a configuration of the HVAC system according to the calculated level of air recirculation. Ideally the system determines the level of air recirculation by searching at least one region of a piecewise affine model that represents a relationship between the level of recirculation and predicted future values of the at least one vehicle cabin parameter. A prediction horizon of the explicit model predictive control is ideally greater than or equal to five intervals and less than or equal to ten intervals.
