GLUE-FREE MATTRESS CONSTRUCTIONFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates generally to a mattress construction and, in particular, but not exclusively, to a mattress construction that is glue-free.BACKGROUND

[0002] Conventional mattresses are constructed in a manner that does not facilitate deconstruction, neither to repair the mattress nor for disposal of the mattress at the end of its life. This failure to facilitate deconstruction creates significant barriers to mattress repair or mattress recycling. Further, a reduced use of glue in mattress construction can be generally desirable and more environmentally friendly.

[0003] There is therefore a need for an improved mattress construction to facilitate mattress repair and mattress recycling and to reduce the use of glue.OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0004] It is an object of the present invention to overcome and / or alleviate one or more of the disadvantages of the prior art or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0037] The present invention relates to a glue-free mattress construction. Elements of the invention are illustrated in concise outline form in the drawings, showing only those specific details that are necessary to understanding the embodiments of the present invention, but so as not to clutter the disclosure with excessive detail that will be obvious to those of ordinary skill in the art in light of the present description.

While glue and adhesives sometimes have a number of advantages in mattress construction, glue and other adhesives typically set once applied and cannot be removed without difficulty or damage to the components of the mattress once connected.

[0046] Typically, recycling mattresses is a time consuming and ineffective task as the glue present in conventional mattresses prevents disassembly of the mattresses without damage or contamination of elements or with significantly increased cost / difficulty.

Claims

THE INVENTION AS CLAIMED IS AS FOLLOWS:1 ) A mattress, the mattress including: a) a top layer including a user side and a bottom side; b) a comfort unit including a top side; and, c) a plurality of attachments that connect the top layer to the comfort unit, wherein the plurality of attachments attach: i) the bottom side of the top layer; and, ii) the top side of the comfort unit via a plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors.2) The mattress according to claim 1 , wherein in use a user sleeps on the user side.3) The mattress according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the top layer is at least one of: a) a quilted panel; and, b) a tufted panel.4) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein a first side of each of the plurality of attachments are attached to the bottom side of the top layer by at least one of: a) sewing; b) stitching; c) bonding; d) quilting; and, e) binding.5) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein each of the plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors is attached to a second side of a respective attachment.6) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the comfort unit includes: a) a comfort layer; b) a sprint unit; c) an attachment layer; d) an insulation unit; and, e) a comfort unit border.7) The mattress according to claim 6, wherein the plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors are attached to at least one of: a) the comfort layer; b) the spring unit; c) the attachment layer; d) the insulation unit; and, e) the comfort unit border.8) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the plurality of attachments comprise at least one of: a) non-woven strips; b) pleated non-woven strips; c) perforated non-woven sheet; d) non-woven tabs; e) fine mesh material; f) fabric strips; g) textile strips; h) pleated textile strips; i) perforated sheet; and, j) perforated textile sheet.9) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors comprise at least one of: a) T-tags; b) string and retainer rings; c) string and retainer buttons; d) T-connectors; and, e) tufting ribbons.10) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the mattress includes a mattress border.11 ) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors can be detached from the plurality of attachments to allow the mattress to be deconstructed.12) The mattress according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the mattress includes: a) a bottom layer including a second top side; b) a second comfort unit including a second bottom side; c) a second plurality of attachments that connect the bottom layer to the second comfort unit, wherein the second plurality of attachments attach: i) the second top side of the bottom layer; and, ii) the second bottom side of the second comfort unit via a second plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors.13) The mattress according to claim 12, wherein: a) the top layer is positioned on a first side of the mattress; and,b) the bottom layer is positioned on a second side of the mattress.14) The mattress according to claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the mattress includes a spring unit and the sprint unit is positioned between the comfort unit and the second comfort unit.15) A method for constructing a mattress, the method including: a) attaching a plurality of attachments to a bottom side of a top layer; and, b) attaching the plurality of attachments to a top side of a comfort unit via a plurality of nonglue mechanical connectors.16) The method according to claim 15, wherein the plurality of attachments is attached to the bottom side of the top layer and attached to the top side of the comfort unit simultaneously.17) The method according to claim 15, wherein the plurality of attachments is firstly attached to the bottom side of the top layer before the plurality of attachments are secondly attached to the top side of the comfort unit.18) The method according to any one of claims 15 to 17, wherein the plurality of attachments is attached to the bottom side of the top layer by at least one of: a) sewing; b) stitching; c) bonding; d) quilting; and, e) binding.19) The method according to any one of claims 15 to 18, wherein the attachments comprise at least one of: a) non-woven strips; b) pleated non-woven strips; c) perforated non-woven sheet; d) non-woven tabs; e) fine mesh material; f) fabric strips; g) textile strips; h) pleated textile strips; i) perforated sheet; and, j) perforated textile sheet.20) The method according to claim 19, wherein at least: a) non-woven strips; b) pleated non-woven strips;c) perforated non-woven sheet; d) fine mesh material; e) fabric strips; f) textile strips; g) pleated textile strips; h) perforated sheet; and, i) perforated textile sheet; are attached to the bottom side of the top layer via a quilting machine.21 ) The method according to claim 19 or claim 20, wherein at least the non-woven tabs are sewn or bonded onto the bottom side of the top layer.22) A method for constructing the mattress of any one of claims 1 to 14, the method comprising: a) attaching the plurality of attachments to the bottom side of the top layer; and, b) attaching the plurality of attachments to the top side of the comfort unit via the plurality of non-glue mechanical connectors.
