[0004] The invention generally relates to a cup. More particularly, but not exclusively the invention relates to a cup with a detachable stem.
[0005] BACKGROUND
[0006] Wine glasses are typically made from glass or plastic. One problem with wine glasses is that they are fragile and tend to break easily. Additionally, wine glasses which are made from plastic are usually single use items which create a large amount of unnecessary waste.
[0007] Glasses with detachable or removable stems are known in the art. However, many of these are unstable due to the lack of weight of the glass and the attachment between the stem and the glass is insecure which can result in the stem accidentally detaching from the glass. Another known problem with some of these glasses with detachable stems is that once the stem has been removed from the glass, the glass is unable to be used on a flat surface as the bottom of the glass is not flat.
[0008] It is an object of a preferred form of the present invention to go at least some way towards addressing at least one of the above problems. While this is an object of a preferred embodiment, it should not be seen as a limitation on the scope of the invention as claimed. The object of the invention per se is simply to provide the public with a useful choice.

[0011] According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a cup comprising:
[0012] • a cup body which is adapted to releasably engage directly or indirectly with a stem; and
[0013] • a stem which is adapted to releasably engage directly or indirectly with the cup body; the cup being configured such that when in use and when the stem is detached from the cup body it is able to sit upright on a flat surface and wherein the cup body and the stem are also both adapted such that when the cup body and stem are releasably engaged with each other this results in the cup body being securely attached to and held upright by the stem when the stem is placed on a flat surface.

[0055] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0056] The present invention relates to a cup with a detachable stem. References in the specification to a cup includes any container or vessel which is capable of storing fluid such as a goblet, tumbler, bowl, flask, glass, mug or the like, etc. References in the specification to a stem includes any type of stand which is capable of supporting a cup on a flat surface and this includes narrow stemware having a foot / base.
[0057] A number of different embodiments have been described below and in reference to Figures 1 -10, but it should be understood the design and aesthetic features of the cup and detachable stem may be changed from those exemplified without departing from the functional aspects of the invention.
[0058] Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a cup 1 . As can be seen the cup 1 has a cup body 101 with a detachable stem 201. The cup body 101 illustrated in this embodiment is a tumbler-shaped cup and it has been securely attached and locked to a detachable stem 201.
[0059] Figures 2 and 3 show the cup body 101 in more detail. The cup body 101 which is adapted to store a flowable drinking liquid such as wine, juice and / or water, etc has a generally circular tapered side wall 102 which extends upwardly from the base 103 of the cup body 101 to the top to a circular rim 104. In an optional embodiment, a lid can be removably attached over the top of the cup body 101 e.g. the lid could be attached over the top of, around or inside the rim 104.
[0060] In a preferred embodiment of the invention the cup body 101 is substantially flat or at least has a substantially flat portion 105 at the bottom of the base 103 of the cup body 101 (or is adapted to lie flat or has a flat profile) such that it is able to sit on a flat surface when the stem 201 has been detached from it. It will be appreciated that in alternative embodiments the bottom profile or bottom of cup body does not need to be flat as the shape of the base of the cup body may allow it to sit on a flat surface when the stem 201 has been detached from it e.g. the base may have an arrangement of different shaped legs, prongs, projections, supports etc or the like to enable this.
[0061] The base 103 of the cup body 101 also has a hollow portion 106 inside it which is shaped and adapted to receive a connection member i.e. it has a circular male connection member / protrusion 106a, an outer circular recess 106b and a circular middle dome 106c all of which engage with parts of a connection member. These parts 106a, 106b, 106c or some of these parts 106a, 106b, 106c may either be attached to the hollow 106. e.g. the parts 106a, 106b, 106c and the hollow 106 in the cup body101 may be made from metal and they could be welded to the hollow 106 or they may be integrally formed as part of the cup body 101. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the shape of the hollow 106 and the parts 106a, 106b, 106c of the hollow 106 may vary and are not limited to what is shown in the drawings. The cup body 101 is most preferably made substantially from metal, however, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the cup body 101 can be made from other suitable materials. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the cup body 101 is made from double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel with internal copper lining / plating and may come in a number of different colour options for consumers to choose from. When the cup body 101 is made from the above materials or materials with similar properties this provides the advantage of keeping the liquid inside the cup body 101 cooler for longer and can also be used for keeping hot liquids in the cup body 101 hot. Another advantage that it provides is that there is no condensation formed on the outside of the cup body 101.
[0062] The cup body 101 may be provided in a number of different shapes and sizes. In certain configurations the dimensions of the cup body 101 may be approximately from 75mm to greater than 150mm in height, preferably 100mm-120mm in height and more preferably about 1 10mm in height; from about 40mm to greater than 100mm in diameter in the rim 104, preferably 70mm-90mm in diameter and more preferably about 79mm in diameter; The dimensions of the hollow 106 will vary depending on the size and shape of the cup body 101 however in one preferred embodiment it is between about 35mm-50mm in width, more preferably 44mm in width; and between about 5mm-10mm in depth, more preferably about 7.5mm in depth; the recess 108 in the base 103 is preferably between about 1 -2mm and most preferably about 1.3mm in depth. These dimensions are not to be taken as limiting in any way as the cup body 101 may be larger or smaller in size.
[0063] In certain configurations the cup body 101 weighs between about 100-300 grams, preferably about 175-225 grams and more preferably about 200 grams. However, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that it is not limited to this weight as the weight of the cup body 101 will vary depending on the size of the cup body 101 and materials used to construct it. As the cup body 101 is most preferably made from metal (instead of glass or plastic) this assists with a more secure connection between the stem 201 and cup body 101 and results in a more stable cup body 101 and cup 1 due to the weight of the metal. Figures 4 and 5 show a connection member 301 which is shaped and adapted to be received by the hollow 106 in the base 103 of the cup body 101 and this connection member 301 when inserted and attached to the hollow 106 in the base 103 of the cup body 101 enables an attachment between the cup body 101 and the stem 201. The connection member 301 is generally circular in shape and as can be seen in figure 5 it has a circular thread 302 and also has a circular lip 303 and these engage with the male member / projection 106a and the recess 106b in the hollow 106 of the base 103 of the cup body 101 respectively. The connection member 301 is adapted to releasably engage with an attachment means (together they form a twist and lock attachment mechanism) on the stem 201 and the connection member 301 makes up one part of this twist and lock attachment mechanism. The connection member 301 has three locking members 304 (only 2 are visible in figure 5) which each have a raised gripping member 304a. The connection member 301 also has a receiving channel 305 below the locking members 304. Those skilled in the art will appreciate the number, shape, size and form of the locking members 304 and the gripping members 304a may vary as can the size and shape of the receiving channel 305. The connection member 301 also has a circular receiving middle dome 306 which is adapted to engage with the circular dome 106c in the hollow 106. While the connection member 301 is preferably circular it may be formed with rectangular, square, oval, hexagonal or other shaped cross-sections to suit the design characteristics of the hollow 106.
[0064] The connection member 301 is preferably made from rubber however it is not limited to this and it can be made from any other suitable materials such as plastic or metal. It will be appreciated that while the connection member 301 can come in a number of different shapes and sizes, it is preferable for the hollow 106 and connection member 301 to be of similar size such that there is a tight fit between the two. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the connection member 301 is around 7.6mm in height and about 44mm in width however they are not limited to these sizes.
[0065] Figures 6 and 7 show the connection member 301 when attached to the hollow 106 in the base 103 of the cup body 101. As can be seen, the connection member 301 also has three receiving slots 307 located between the locking members 304 for receiving locking members / projections from an attachment means on the detachable stem 201 . The connection member 301 can be removably attached to the hollow 106 in the base 103 of the cup body 101. In some embodiments, the connection member 301 may form part of the cup body 101. To attach the connection member 301 to the cup body 101 a user would insert the connection member 101 into the hollow 106 until the male member 106a and thread 302 are engaged, the two domes 106c, 306 are engaged and the lip 303 is engaged with the recess 106b in the hollow 106 and this results in the connection member 301 being securely attached to the cup body 101. As the connection member 301 is internal to the cup body 101 (i.e. it cannot be seen from the side once it is attached) the profile of the bottom of the cup body 101 is maintained and this allows the cup body 101 to be used on any flat surface with or without the 201 stem attached. In some embodiments, the connection member 301 may be permanently coupled to the hollow 106 and in alternative embodiments the hollow 106 and connection member 301 may have different types of attachment means (e.g. magnetic, screw, bayonet etc.) which enables them to be removably attached to each other.
[0066] Figures 8 and 9 show the stem 201 when it has been detached from the cup body 101 . The stem 201 has a large circular base / foot (with a flat bottom) 202 at a first end, an attachment means 203 at a second end and an elongated stem member with flared circular ends 204 connecting the base / foot 202 and attachment means 203. The attachment means 203 is adapted to releasably engage with the connection member 301 . The attachment means 203 is generally circular in shape and has a hollow centre 203 and three generally r-shaped locking members 203b with each having a gripping member 203c on one end and a base 203d at the other end. The attachment means 203 also has three receiving channels 203e underneath the r-shaped locking members 203b. These parts 203a, 203b, 203c, 203d, 203e are configured to allow the stem 201 to releasably lock to the connection member 301 and cup body 101.
[0067] The stem 201 is preferably made substantially from a hard plastic, however, it will be appreciated that it can be made from any other suitable materials. The stem 201 is preferably about between 50-200mm in height, preferably between about 75mm- 125mm, more preferably about 105mm in height. The base 202 is preferably about between 50mm-125mm in diameter, preferably about 60mm-90mm, most preferably about 75mm in diameter. The attachment means member 203 is preferably about between 20mm-80mm in diameter, preferably about 30mm-55mm, most preferably about 44mm in diameter. The stem member 204 is preferably about between 4mm- 12mm in diameter, preferably about 6mm-10mm, most preferably about 6mm in diameter. It will be appreciated that the stem 201 is not limited to these dimensions and may also come in different shapes.
[0068] In the embodiment shown the base 202, elongated member 203 and the attachment means 203 all form the stem 201 , however, in alternative embodiments these parts may be able to releasably engage with each other, for example, if a larger base / foot 202 was desired it could be removed from the elongated member 203 and replaced with a larger base / foot 202.
[0069] In use to attach the stem 201 to the cup body 101 a user would line up the locking members 203b with the receiving apertures 306 in the connection member 301 and then would insert the stem attachment means 203 into the connection member 301 housed within the hollow 104 in the base 103 of the cup body 101 so the dome 306 is received by the hollow 203a in the stem 201 and then they would twist the stem 201 (or cup body 101 ) such that the locking members 201 b enter the receiving channel 305 and the locking members 304 on the connection member 301 enter the receiving channels 203e. Once this has been done a user would continue to twist until one end of each of the three locking members 304 abuts against the base 203d of the three locking members 203b and the gripping members 203c, 304a are engaged with each other which results in the stem 201 being securely fastened and locked to the cup body 101. To remove the stem 201 the process would be reversed, however, the user would have to use sufficient force to push the stem 201 upwardly into the cup body 101 to release the engagement between the gripping members 203c, 304a before twisting the stem 201 to remove it. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that other types of known locking members / means may be used.
[0070] Figure 10 shows a second embodiment of a cup 2 having a cup body 401 with a detachable stem 201. The cup body 401 shown in this embodiment has a flat bottom and has a champagne flute-like shape which has been securely attached and locked to the same detachable stem 201 as previously described. The cup body 401 also has the same hollow in its base 402 as the previously described cup body 101 in the first embodiment and also has the same connection member 301 housed within its base 402. As the cup body 401 has the same connection member 301 and hollow in its base 402 a user is able to use the same stem 201 on both cup body 101 and cup body 401 . To attach the stem 201 to the cup body 401 the same previously described process would be used. In some embodiments, the shape and size of the hollow in the cup body 401 may differ to the hollow 106 shown in the first embodiment.
[0071] The cup body 401 is substantially flat 405 (or at least has a substantially flat portion) at the bottom of the base 402 such that it is able to sit on a flat surface when the stem 201 has been detached from it (i.e. the profile of the bottom of the cup body 401 is not changed and can sit flat). The cup body 401 is preferably made substantially from metal, however, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the cup body 401 can be made from other suitable materials. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the cup body 401 is made from vacuum insulated stainless steel with an inner copper lining and may come in a number of different colour options for consumers to choose from.

In certain configurations the dimensions of the cup body 401 may be approximately from 75mm to greater than 200mm in height, preferably 100mm-180mm in height and more preferably about 140mm in height; from about 30mm to greater than 80mm in rim diameter 104, preferably 40mm-70mm in diameter and more preferably about 56mm in diameter. These dimensions are not to be taken as limiting in any way as the cup body 401 may be larger or smaller in size.

However, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that it is not limited to this weight as the weight of the cup will vary depending on the size of the cup body 401 and materials used to construct it. As the cup body 401 is most preferably made from metal (instead of glass or plastic) this assists with a more secure connection between the stem 201 and cup body 401 and a more stable cup body 401 and cup 2 due to the weight of the metal.
[0074] It will be appreciated that in alternative embodiments other types of connection or locking means between the cup body 101 , 401 and stem 201 may be used and the invention is not limited to the twist and lock connection which is shown in the drawings, for example, the base of the cup body 101 , 201 may have a hollow threaded receiving aperture in it and the stem may have a corresponding threaded end and the stem can be screwed onto and / or off the cup. In another embodiment, the connection may be magnetic with the base having a magnet housed within a hollow within the base and the upper end of the stem having a magnetic end which is inserted into the base to enable the attachment. In another embodiment, there is no hollow in the base and the connecting securing means between the cup and the stem comprises complementary magnets located on the cup and the stem and wherein the cup is adapted such that the cup can sit on a flat surface when the stem is removed. In another embodiment, the attachment means between the cups and stem may be a bayonet-type connection. It will also be appreciated that the shape of the cup body 101 , 401 is not limited to the two previously described embodiments and they can come in different shapes and forms. In some embodiments the bases may have different shapes which still allows the cup body to sit on a flat surface when the stem 201 has been removed. In one alternative embodiment the base may have shaped legs or projections such as table like legs or curved claw like projections or pointed and angled prongs etc. In some of these alternative embodiments the stem 201 may attach to these legs / projections. It will also be appreciated that the shape of the stem 201 is not limited to the one shown in the drawings.
[0075] The cup 1 , 2, cup body 101 , 401 and detachable stem 201 of the present invention provide a number of advantages / benefits. As the cup body 101 , 401 is preferably made from metal and the stem 201 is made from hard plastic they are very durable and resistant to breaking compared to known wine glasses and the weight of the cup body 101 , 401 keeps the cup 1 , 2 more stable once the stem 201 is attached. Furthermore, when the stem / cup attachment is internal to the cup body 101 , 401 (i.e. is not visible) this allows the cup body 101 , 401 to be used on a flat surface when the stem 201 has been removed as the profile of the bottom of the cup body 101 , 401 is not changed. Another advantage provided by the internal attachment is that it provides for a very secure attachment so the stem 201 does not come off the cup 101 , 401 by accident. Additionally, when the cup body 101 , 401 is made from the preferred materials previously described, it provides the advantage that it keeps the liquid in the cup body 101 , 401 cold (or warm) and there is no condensation formed on the outside of the cup body 101 , 401 when a cold liquid is held by it. It is to be understood that even though numerous characteristics and advantages of the various embodiments of the present invention have been set forth in the foregoing description, together with details of the structure and functioning of various embodiments of the invention, this disclosure is illustrative only, and changes may be made in detail so long as the functioning of the invention is not adversely affected. For example, the particular elements of the cup 1 , 2, cup body 101 , 401 and stem 201 and connection member 301 may vary dependent on the particular application for which it is used without variation in the spirit and scope of the present invention. In addition, although the preferred embodiments described herein are directed to a cup 1 , 2, cup body 101 , 401 and a stem 201 it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that variations and modifications are possible within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims
CLAIMS:
1. A cup comprising:• a cup body which is adapted to releasably engage directly or indirectly with a stem; and• a stem which is adapted to releasably engage directly or indirectly with the cup body; the cup being configured such that when in use and when the stem is detached from the cup body it is able to sit upright on a flat surface and wherein the cup body and the stem are also both adapted such that when the cup body and stem are releasably engaged with each other this results in the cup body being securely attached to and held upright by the stem when the stem is placed on a flat surface.
2. A cup according to claim 1 , wherein the cup body the cup body is configured such that the bottom profile of the base of the cup body or at least a portion of the bottom profile of the base of the cup body is substantially flat.
3. A cup according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the cup body has a bottom profile that remains unchanged when the stem is detached from it.
4. A cup according to claim 1 , 2 or 3, wherein the cup has an attachment means which is configured to securely attach the stem to the cup body.
5. A cup according to claim 4, wherein the attachment means is concealed within the cup body when the stem is attached.
6. A cup according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the attachment means comprises complementary engagement features on the cup body and the stem.
7. A cup according to claim 4, 5 or 6, wherein the attachment means comprises complementary magnets located on the cup body and stem to enable a magnetic connection.
8. A cup according to claim 4, 5 or 6, wherein the attachment means comprises complementary threads on the cup body and stem to enable a threaded connection.
9. A cup according to claim 4, 5 or 6, wherein the attachment means comprises a two- part twist and lock mechanism in which one part of the mechanism is located on the cup body and the other part of the mechanism is located on the stem.
10. A cup according to any one of claims 4-9, wherein the cup body has a hollow portion in its base and the attachment means is housed within this when the stem is attached to the cup body.
11. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cup has a locking means which is able to releasably lock the cup body to the stem.
12. A cup according to any one of the preceding clams, wherein the cup has a connection member housed within a hollow portion in the base of the cup body and wherein the connection member is adapted to releasably engage either directly or indirectly with the stem.
13. A cup according to claim 12, wherein the connection member has an attachment means which is adapted to releasably engage with the stem.
14. A cup according to claim 12 or 13, wherein the connection member is adapted to releasably engage with the hollow portion within the base of the cup body.
15. A cup according to claim 12 or 13, wherein the connection member is permanently fixed to the hollow portion within the base of the cup body.
16. A cup according to claim 12 or 13, wherein the connection member forms part of the cup body.
17. A cup according to any one of claims 12-16, wherein the stem has an attachment means which is adapted to releasably engage with the connection member.
18. A cup according to claim 17, wherein the attachment means on the stem forms a first part of a twist and lock attachment mechanism which is adapted to engage with a second part of the twist and lock attachment mechanism which is located on theconnection member and when the two parts of the twist and lock attachment mechanism are engaged this results in the stem being locked to the cup body.
19. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cup body is made substantially from metal.

A cup having:• a cup body which is adapted to sit on a flat surface and is made substantially from metal;• an internal attachment means within the cup body configured to securely attach a stem to the cup body; and• a stem being configured to detach from the cup body without altering the ability of the cup body to sit on a flat surface.
21. A cup according to claim 20, wherein the internal attachment means is able to releasably lock the stem to the cup body.
22. A cup according to claim 20 or 21 , wherein the attachment means is hidden from view when the stem is attached to the cup body.
23. A cup according to claim 20, 21 , or 22, wherein the cup body has a hollow portion within its base and the internal attachment means is housed within this when the cup body has been attached to the stem.
24. A cup according to any one of claims 20-23, wherein the cup body has a flat bottom profile enabling stability on a flat surface both with and without the stem attached.
25. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the stem is made substantially from hard plastic.
26. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cup is a wine shaped cup.
27. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cup body is adapted to keep cold liquids cold and warm liquids warm.
28. A cup according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cup body is made from vacuum insulated stainless steel and has an internal copper lining.
