Cover assembly for a battery cell

Abstract

A cover assembly 100, for a battery cell, comprises at least one cover plate 101, aperture, aperture mounted pole-piece 102 and seal (200,Fig.2). Insulating-member seal, electrically insulates the pole-piece from the cover plate, is arranged partly in the aperture, providing an interference fit using compression. A further sealing element (524,Fig.5B) may be potting compound, glass-to-metal seal, injection moulding or seal strip comprising polymer tape and hot-melt adhesive. The pole-piece may have an electrode tab welding portion of thickness 0.5-4mm formed at the base of a recess 105 with a thinned portion (572,Fig.5O), and portions covering the aperture 106 and extending along the cover plate externally / internally 104. The insulating-member may be a deformable polymer sealing gasket and comprise a first (202,Fig.2) and second portion (204,Fig.2) corresponding to pole-piece. The aperture may be substantially round, oval, rectangular or square. A battery cell and method for manufacturing a cover assembly are also provided. (FIGURE 1)
