Abstract
An extension of MAC sublayer 202 primitives to report transmit queue congestion or congestion acknowledgement to a higher level of the network. The higher level may be the logical link control (LLC) sublayer 204 or Layer-3 IP services 210. This extends explicit congestion notification (ECN), and may extend Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S), to layer 2 of the network. It may cause TCP service 220 to adjust its transmission rate, or to add congestion markings to layer 3 packets or layer 4 segments. The primitive may be an MA-UNITDATA primitive or a MAC layer management layer (MLME) primitive. This may be used for access point or non-access-point devices in the network, and may extend L4S mechanisms to an uplink from end user to access point. The layer 2 frame may contain an identifier of a flow or stream corresponding to its payload. Figure 2A
