Beam-control optics for optical wireless communications

Abstract

A transmitter / receiver optical adapter 114 for a transmitter / receiver optical front end (OFE) for an optical wireless communications (OWC) module, comprises: an optical path extending from an input end 150 to an output end 162; and a light re-direction arrangement located on the path. The adapter is for coupling of an input light beam 130 from an optical source to the input end along a primary / secondary transmission axis 180 and for transmission of the input beam through the input end to form an internal light beam within the optical adapter. The optical adapter controls a beam profile of the internal light beam as the internal light beam propagates from the input end to the light re-direction arrangement 172 along the optical path. The light re-direction arrangement directs the internal light beam towards the output end along the optical path for transmission through the output end to form an output light beam which propagates away from the output end along a secondary / primary transmission axis 182. The secondary / primary transmission axis is in a direction which is different to a direction of the primary / secondary transmission axis. [Figure 3B]
