AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing color electrophoretic displays have difficulty precisely controlling the position of various pigment particles within a limited thickness space, resulting in inaccurate color display. Furthermore, traditional driving methods lead to color flickering and long refresh times.

Method used

Four types of particle electrophoresis media are used, including light-scattering white particles and three types of non-light-scattering subtractive primary color particles. Through an improved driving voltage control method, five voltage levels (high positive, low positive, zero, low negative, and high negative) are used to achieve fast refresh and reduce color flicker.

Benefits of technology

It enables precise control of pigment position within a limited space, reduces color flicker, improves the accuracy and refresh rate of color display, and expands the color range.

Abstract

An improved method for driving a four-particle electrophoretic medium comprising one scattering particle and at least two subtractive particles. This method allows displays, such as color electrophoretic displays, to include a backplane with an array of thin-film transistors, where each thin-film transistor includes a metal-oxide-semiconductor layer. The metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors allow for faster, higher voltage switching, thus enabling direct color switching of the four-particle electrophoretic medium without the need for top-plane switching. As a result, color electrophoretic displays can be updated more quickly and colors can be reproduced more reliably.
