Some known aerosol generating systems include thermal atomizers, such as electric heaters or induction heating devices. Thermal atomizers are configured to heat and vaporize an aerosol-forming matrix to generate an aerosol. A typical aerosol-forming matrix used in an aerosol generation system is a nicotine formulation, which may be a liquid nicotine formulation containing aerosol-forming agents such as glycerol and / or propylene glycol.

[0008] An aerosol generating article is also provided for use in an aerosol generation system. The aerosol generating article may comprise an aerosol forming matrix. The aerosol forming matrix may comprise one or more aerosol forming agents. The aerosol forming matrix may comprise hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The aerosol forming matrix may comprise one or more cellulose-based reinforcing agents.
[0009] An aerosol generating article is also provided, the aerosol generating article comprising: an aerosol forming matrix, the aerosol forming matrix comprising: one or more aerosol forming agents; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; and one or more cellulose-based fortifiers.
[0010] An aerosol generating system is also provided, comprising: an aerosol generating apparatus; and an aerosol generating article. The aerosol generating article may include an aerosol forming matrix. The aerosol forming matrix may comprise one or more aerosol forming agents. [0011] An aerosol generating system is also provided, the aerosol generating system comprising: an aerosol generating apparatus; and an aerosol generating article, the aerosol generating article comprising an aerosol forming matrix, the aerosol forming matrix comprising: one or more aerosol forming agents; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; and one or more cellulose-based fortifiers.
[0012] As used herein, the term "aerosol generating article" refers to an article used to generate aerosols. Aerosol generating articles typically comprise an aerosol forming matrix suitable for and intended to be heated or burned to release volatile compounds that can form aerosols. Conventional smoking is ignited when a user applies a flame to one end of a cigarette and inhales air through the other end. The localized heat provided by the flame and oxygen in the air inhaled through the cigarette ignites the end of the cigarette, and the resulting combustion generates inhalable smoke. In contrast, in a "heated aerosol generating article," the aerosol is generated by heating the aerosol forming matrix rather than by burning the aerosol forming matrix. Known heated aerosol generating articles, such as those described in CN 121286757 A, include, for example, electrically heated aerosol generating articles.
[0013] As used herein, the term "aerosol forming matrix" refers to a matrix capable of generating volatile compounds upon heating, which can form aerosols. Aerosols generated from an aerosol forming matrix can be visible or invisible to the human eye and can contain vapors (e.g., fine particulate matter in a gaseous state, which are typically liquid or solid at room temperature) as well as droplets of gas and condensed vapors.
[0014] Aerosol forming matrices containing a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and cellulose-based reinforcing agents can have numerous advantages.
[0015] The inclusion of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in an aerosol forming matrix can help improve the manufacturing process of the aerosol forming matrix. For example, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose can reduce the overall viscosity of the slurry mixed during the preparation of the aerosol forming matrix. Lower viscosity slurries may flow more easily than conventional slurries, and are easier to mix, transfer, and handle during the manufacturing process.
[0016] The inclusion of cellulose-based reinforcing agents in an aerosol forming matrix can increase the tensile strength of the aerosol forming matrix. For example, during transport or during the manufacturing process, aerosol forming matrices with high tensile strength are less likely to deteriorate or break.
[0017] Despite the above advantages, the inventors have found that aerosol forming matrices containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose may have insufficient tensile strength. However, by using cellulose-based reinforcing agents to increase the tensile strength of the aerosol forming matrix, the reduction in tensile strength caused by the inclusion of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose can be overcome, while still providing the aforementioned processing advantages associated with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

The aerosol-forming matrix may have a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose content of about 0.5% by weight to about 20% by weight.
[0022] The aerosol forming matrix may have a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose content of about 0.5% to about 40% by weight. [0165] Specific embodiments will be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0166] FIG1 illustrates an example of an aerosol generating article containing the aerosol forming matrix as described herein; and
[0167] FIG2 illustrates an example of an aerosol generating system comprising an aerosol generating apparatus and the aerosol generating article shown in FIG1.
[0168] Aerosol generation systems for delivering aerosols to users typically include an atomizer configured to generate an inhalable aerosol from an aerosol-forming matrix. Some known aerosol generation systems include thermal atomizers, such as electric heaters or induction heating devices. Thermal atomizers are configured to heat and vaporize the aerosol-forming matrix to generate an aerosol. A typical aerosol-forming matrix used in aerosol generation systems is a nicotine formulation, which may be a liquid nicotine formulation containing aerosol-forming agents such as glycerin and / or propylene glycol.
[0169] Some aerosol-forming matrices have low tensile strength. This means that such aerosol-forming matrices may crack or break before the user uses the aerosol-generating article, which is undesirable. Some aerosol-forming matrices have a tendency to melt, which may result in the formation of a crust on a portion of the aerosol-generating article.A crust formed on a portion of an aerosol-generating article may reduce the level of nicotine delivered to the user. A crust formed on a portion of an aerosol-generating article may reduce the volume of aerosol generated by the aerosol-generating system.
[0170] For example, as discussed above, in an aerosol-generating system including an induction heating device, the aerosol-generating article may include a sensor that can be heated by an induction source. Heat from the sensor is then transferred to the aerosol-forming matrix. Components of the aerosol-forming matrix can then be vaporized to generate an aerosol. However, if the sensor is encased in an aerosol-forming matrix crust, the crust may reduce heat transfer from the heated sensor to the aerosol-forming matrix. This reduction in heat transfer from the heated sensor to the aerosol-forming matrix may reduce the level of nicotine delivered to the user. This reduction in heat transfer from the heated sensor to the aerosol-forming matrix may reduce the volume of aerosol generated by the aerosol-generating system.
[0171] Therefore, it is desirable to provide an aerosol-forming matrix with increased tensile strength. It is also desirable to provide an aerosol-forming matrix with a reduced melting tendency, which may reduce the crusting effect of the aerosol-forming matrix on the components of the aerosol-generating article.
[0172] FIG1 illustrates an example of an aerosol-generating article 1000 containing an aerosol-forming matrix as described herein.
[0173] In the example of FIG1, the aerosol-generating article 1000 includes four elements: an aerosol-forming matrix 1020, a hollow cellulose acetate tube 1030, a spacer element 1040, and a mouthpiece filter 1050. The four elements 1020, 1030, 1040, and 1050 are arranged sequentially and coaxially aligned. The four elements 1020, 1030, 1040, and 1050 are assembled from cigarette paper 1060 to form the aerosol-generating article 1000.
[0174] In the example of FIG1, the aerosol-generating article 1000 has an inlet end 1012 and a distal end 1013. During use, the user can insert the mouth end 1012 into his or her mouth. The distal end 1013 is located at the end of the aerosol generating article 1000 opposite to the mouth end 1012. This example of the aerosol generating article 1000 illustrated in FIG1 is particularly suitable for use with electrically operated aerosol generating apparatus that includes a heater for heating the aerosol generating matrix. Specification 15 / 19 pages 17 CN 121286757 A
[0175] In one example, when assembled, the aerosol generating article 1000 has a length of about 45 mm and has an outer diameter of about 7.2 mm and an inner diameter of about 6.9 mm.
[0176] In the example of FIG1, the aerosol forming matrix 1020 is provided in the form of a rod made by pressing a sheet of aerosol forming matrix. Many examples of the aerosol forming matrix 1020 are shown in Table 1 below. Sheets are gathered, pressed, and wrapped in filter paper (not shown) to form a rod.
[0177] As shown in FIG. 1, the aerosol generating article 1000 is designed to be engaged with an aerosol generating device for consumption. This aerosol generating device includes means for heating an aerosol forming matrix 1020 to a sufficient temperature to form an aerosol. Typically, the aerosol generating device may include a heating element surrounding the aerosol generating article 1000 adjacent to the aerosol forming matrix 1020 or an element inserted into the aerosol forming matrix 1020.
[0178] Upon engagement with the aerosol generating device, a smoker inhales through the mouth end 1012 of the smoking article 1000, and the aerosol forming matrix 1020 is heated to a temperature of approximately 375 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, volatile compounds escape from the aerosol forming matrix 1020. These compounds condense to form an aerosol. The aerosol is inhaled through a filter 1050 and enters the user's mouth.
[0179] FIG2 illustrates a portion of an electrically operated aerosol generation system 2000. This aerosol generation system utilizes heating blades 2100 to heat the aerosol generation matrix 1020 of an aerosol generation article 1000. In the example of FIG2, the heating blades 2100 are mounted within the aerosol article receiving chamber of an electrically operated aerosol generation device 2010. The aerosol generation device 2010 defines a plurality of air holes 2050 for allowing airflow to the aerosol generation article 1000. Airflow is indicated by arrows in FIG2. The aerosol generation device 2010 includes a power supply and electronics, which are not shown in FIG2. The aerosol generation article 1000 of FIG2 is as described with respect to FIG1. Examples
[0180] Example formulations (Examples A, B, C, D, and E) having the compositions shown in Table 1 of the aerosol forming matrix according to the invention were prepared. Instruction manual 16 / 19 pages 18 CN 121286757 A
[0181]
[0182] Table 1
[0183] The aerosol forming matrices of Examples A, B, C, D and E were prepared by the following:
[0184] (1) mixing the components with water using heat and agitation to form a slurry;
[0185] (2) casting the slurry onto a planar surface to form a film with a thickness of about 210 micrometers;
[0186] (3) leaving the film on the planar surface to solidify; and
[0187] (3) drying the film by heating it to about 140 degrees Celsius for about 8 minutes.
[0188] The aerosol forming matrices obtained after drying are solid. In other words, each aerosol forming matrix has a stable size and shape and does not flow. The term “stable” is used herein to indicate that the aerosol forming matrix substantially maintains its shape and quality when exposed to a variety of environmental conditions. Therefore, when exposed to standard temperature and pressure while the relative humidity varies from about 10% to about 60%, the aerosol-forming matrix essentially does not release or absorb water.
[0189] This is particularly advantageous because it will ensure that the aerosol forming matrix according to the invention does not release a liquid phase during storage or, for example, during transport from the manufacturing facility to the point of sale.
[0190] When used in an aerosol generating apparatus, as described above, the aerosol forming matrices of Examples A, B, C, D, and E are heated to a temperature of approximately 375 degrees Celsius. The nicotine and glycerol contained in the membrane evaporate. The nicotine and glycerol condense to form an inhalable aerosol. This aerosol can then be inhaled by the user. The aerosol forming matrix shrinks slightly and its volume decreases. However, the membrane remains solid and retains its membrane form. The aerosol forming matrix appears slightly hardened and exhibits a darker brown color.
[0191] The aerosol forming matrix of Example A comprises a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and a cellulose-based fortifier. In Example A, the cellulose-based fortifier is cellulose fiber. The aerosol forming matrix of Example A also comprises sodium carboxymethylcellulose, nicotine, glycerol, and a carboxylic acid. In Example A, the carboxylic acid is lactic acid.
[0192] The aerosol forming matrix of Example B comprises a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and a cellulose-based reinforcing agent. In Example B, the cellulose-based reinforcing agent is cellulose fiber. The aerosol forming matrix of Example B contains more cellulose fiber than the aerosol forming matrix of Example A. The aerosol forming matrix of Example B also comprises sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CN 121286757 A, page 17 / 19, specification) and glycerol.
[0193] The aerosol forming matrix of Example C comprises a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and a cellulose-based reinforcing agent. In Example C, the cellulose-based reinforcing agent is cellulose fiber. The aerosol forming matrix of Example C contains less cellulose fiber than the aerosol forming matrix of Example A. The aerosol forming matrix of Example C comprises agar instead of sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The aerosol forming matrix of Example C also comprises glycerol.
[0194] The aerosol forming matrix of Example D comprises a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and two cellulose-based reinforcing agents. In Example D, the cellulose-based reinforcing agent is cellulose fiber and microcrystalline cellulose. The aerosol-forming matrix of Example D contains less cellulose fiber than the aerosol-forming matrix of Example A. The aerosol-forming matrix of Example D contains agar instead of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The aerosol-forming matrix of Example D also contains glycerol.
[0195] The aerosol-forming matrix of Example E contains a combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and a cellulose-based reinforcing agent. In Example E, the cellulose-based reinforcing agent is cellulose powder. The aerosol-forming matrix of Example E also contains sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, nicotine, glycerol, and a carboxylic acid. In Example E, the carboxylic acid is lactic acid.
[0196] The effects of the components of Examples A, B, C, and D above, including the effect of the cellulose-based fortifier, will now be demonstrated by comparison with examples of comparative aerosol-forming matrices. The comparative aerosol-forming matrices comprise 25.53 wt% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, 6.38 wt% agar, and 63.81 wt% glycerol.
[0197] Table 2 shows a comparison of the tensile strength between the five example formulations (Examples A, B, C, and D) of the aerosol-forming matrices and the comparative examples.
[0198] The tensile strength of the example and comparative formulations was measured using conventional methods that stretched a given-size test specimen of each formulation at a constant elongation until it broke. A tensile strength testing instrument was attached to the test specimen, which provides a measurement of the breaking force when the formulation breaks. The tensile strength of the test specimen was obtained by dividing the breaking force at break by the width of the specimen.
[0199]
[0200] Table 2
[0201] As shown in Table 2, compared with the comparative example, the aerosol forming matrix of Example A provides an increase of 256 N / m in tensile strength. This corresponds to an increase of 61% in tensile strength.
[0202] Compared with the comparative example, the aerosol forming matrix of Example B provides an increase of 1159 N / m in tensile strength. This corresponds to an increase of 275% in tensile strength.
[0203] Compared with the comparative example, the aerosol forming matrix of Example C provides an increase of 409 N / m in tensile strength. This corresponds to an increase of 97% in tensile strength.
[0204] Compared with the comparative example, the aerosol forming matrix of Example D provides an increase of 778 N / m in tensile strength. This corresponds to an increase of 185% in tensile strength.
[0205] Therefore, compared with the comparative example, the aerosol forming matrices of Examples A, B, C, and D all show a significant increase in tensile strength. The inventors have discovered that this increase in the tensile strength of the aerosol forming matrix can provide numerous advantages, particularly for subsequent processing steps in the manufacture of aerosol-generated articles containing the aerosol forming matrix.
[0206] For example, after the aerosol forming matrix is formed, it is typically wound onto a spool. The increase in the tensile strength of the aerosol forming matrix can reduce breakage of the matrix due to tension when the aerosol forming matrix is transferred to the spool.
[0207] Subsequent manufacturing steps typically involve unwinding the aerosol forming matrix from the spool and then pressing the aerosol forming matrix using a pressing roller. The increase in the tensile strength of the aerosol forming matrix can reduce breakage during the pressing process.
[0208] The reduction in breakage of the aerosol forming matrix during subsequent processing steps can reduce waste of the aerosol forming matrix in the manufacture of aerosol-generated articles containing the aerosol forming matrix.Additionally, if the aerosol-forming matrix breaks down during the processing steps, manufacturing time may be lost; therefore, an increase in the tensile strength of the aerosol-forming matrix can improve manufacturing time.
[0209] Although the aerosol-forming matrices of Examples C and D exhibit a large increase in tensile strength, Examples C and D may cause crusting on a portion of the aerosol-generating article containing the aerosol-forming matrix because they contain agar. The inventors believe that agar melts when heated (e.g., by an aerosol-generating apparatus). The molten agar can form agglomerates and form around a portion of the aerosol-generating article. After the aerosol-generating article is no longer heated, the molten agar subsequently cools and solidifies into a crust. This is particularly problematic for aerosol-generating articles containing receptors, as crusting on receptors has been found to reduce heat transfer from the receptors to the aerosol-forming matrix, which may reduce the nicotine level delivered to the user and reduce the volume of aerosol delivered to the user.
[0210] The aerosol-forming matrices of Examples A and B do not contain agar. Instead, the aerosol-forming matrices of Examples A and B contain sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The inventors have discovered that aerosol-forming matrices containing carboxymethyl cellulose instead of agar exhibit reduced crusting. In fact, in some instances, the inventors have found that using carboxymethyl cellulose instead of agar can completely eliminate the crusting problem. Reducing and eliminating crusting, particularly on receptors, leads to an increase in nicotine levels delivered to the user and an increase in the volume of aerosols generated from the aerosol-forming matrix.Specification Page 19 / 19, 21 CN 121286757 A Figure 1 Figure 2 Drawings of the Specification Page 1 / 1, 22 CN 121286757 A Abstract The present invention provides an aerosol-forming substrate.
