A pedal may include a pedal body member having an internal cavity. The pedal may include an axle having a shaft adapted to extend into the internal cavity. The pedal body member may be adapted for transverse or side-to-side rotatable movement relative to a longitudinal axis of the axle shaft. The pedal body member may be self-centering and include one or more springs (such as coil, leaf, cantilever, torsion, etc., for example) to apply force to move the pedal body member toward a home or resting position relative to the axle shaft. The pedal may be adapted so that the user's foot can be placed on either a top surface or a bottom surface of the pedal body member. Claims

1. A pedal comprising:a pedal body member having a shaft cavity;an axle including a threaded end and a shaft extending from the threaded end to a distal end, the shaft extending into the shaft cavity;a bearing secured to the pedal body member adjacent a first location on the shaft cavity, the axle shaft being rotatably mounted to the bearing adjacent a first location on the axle shaft, the bearing having a central pivot axis that is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the axle shaft, the pedal body member being adapted to rotate about the axle shaft and about the central pivot axis;a distal bearing rotatably mounted to the axle shaft adjacent a second location on the axle shaft, the first location on the axle shaft being spaced apart from the second location on the axle shaft;a sliding bearing block, the distal end of the axle shaft being rotatably mounted to the sliding bearing block, the sliding bearing block having a bore, the distal bearing being mounted within the bore;a forward spring disposed within the pedal body member and adapted to impart a force to the sliding bearing block to move the axle shaft toward a rear edge of pedal body member; anda rear spring disposed within the pedal body member and adapted to impart a force to the sliding bearing block to move the axle shaft toward a forward edge of the pedal body member.

2. The pedal of claim 1, in which upper and lower surfaces of the sliding bearing block include low friction material.

3. The pedal of claim 2, in which an upper sheet of acetal resin is attached to an upper surface of the sliding bearing block, and a lower sheet of acetal resin is attached to a lower surface of the sliding bearing block.

4. The pedal of any preceding claim, in which the sliding bearing block had an uppersurface and a lower surface, the upper surface of the sliding bearing block is in sliding engagement with an upper surface of a shaft cavity in the pedal body member, and the lower surface of the sliding bearing block is in sliding engagement with a lower surface of the shaft cavity.

5. The pedal of any of preceding claim, in which the forward spring is disposed in a forward spring bore in the pedal body member and the rear spring is disposed in a rear spring bore in the pedal body member, each of the forward and rear spring bores having a longitudinal axis disposed in generally perpendicular relationship to the longitudinal axis of the axle shaft when the pedal body member is in a resting position.

6. The pedal of any of preceding claim, wherein the bearing has a central pivot axisthat is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the shaft of the axle, the pedal body member being adapted to rotate about the axle shaft and about the central pivot axis.

7. The pedal of claim 7, in which the pivot axis intersects the longitudinal axis.

8. The pedal of any preceding claim, in which a distal end of the shaft cavity iscovered with an end plate.
