Abstract
Commercial hand sanitizers circulating in the community are dominated by alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The use of alcohol content in the range of 60 - 95% can damage the oil layer on the hands so that the hands are dehydrated and feel dry. In addition, with a high alcohol content, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are flammable and environmentally unfriendly. Replacing alcohol with other antimicrobials in the form of CNC / Ag / Beeswax composites can prevent hand dehydration. According to this invention, a CNC / Ag / Beeswax composite material is provided as a material for making non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers and a method for making it. The manufacture of CNC / Ag / Beeswax is carried out by mixing CNC and AgNO3 which will be reduced by NaBH4. Furthermore, the addition of beeswax is carried out by heating and the mixture of CNC, Ag, and beeswax is homogenized at a speed of 15,000 rpm.Antibacterial tests were conducted on the formed composite using the agar well diffusion method. The results of the antibacterial test of the composite indicated that increasing the concentration of Ag and beeswax would enlarge the inhibition zone of the composite. In this experiment, with an amount of AgNO3 of 1.19 mol and a ratio of beeswax and CNC / Ag composite of 2:49, the inhibition zone for E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was 10.83 and 12.6, respectively.
