Abstract

The method of making nanocellulose from renewable natural resources is the main focus in the creation of sustainable functional materials as surfactant agents. In this invention, nanocellulose is made from nipah frond biomass waste through a pretreatment process, namely delignification using 5% NaOH and bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide to purify cellulose from nipah fronds, followed by a hydrolysis process using sulfuric acid with various treatment variations (Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„ 75% at a temperature of 60 0C and a temperature of 700C; Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„ 98% at a temperature of 400C) to produce nanocellulose. The resulting nanocellulose is chemically modified through an esterification process using oleic acid with a ratio of 1:100, catalyzed by the addition of sulfuric acid (Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„).Characterization of modified nanocellulose was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), water contact angle, zeta potential, and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA).
