Abstract
This invention discloses an integrated method for the Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process based on metrological fiber permeability measurements and resin flow modeling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The method begins with the characterization of the anisotropic permeability of composite fibers (Kx, Ky, Kz) using a multi-point tester that controls critical variables such as pressure gradient, resin flow rate, viscosity as a function of temperature, and fiber compaction degree. The obtained permeability data are then formatted as material parameters for CFD simulations based on RANS k–ε and porous media models, enabling the prediction of resin flow patterns, impregnation front development, dry spot risk, and race-tracking tendencies. The simulation results are used to establish optimal VARTM process parameters, including inlet–vent positions, vacuum schemes, injection rates, and flow distribution mesh requirements. The full integration of metrological permeability testing and CFD modeling results in a method capable of predicting impregnation performance prior to manufacturing, improving product quality, minimizing defects, and reducing the need for trial and error. This invention provides a scientific and systematic approach to the design of VARTM processes for high-performance composites.
