Abstract
This invention relates to the Benger plant (Lagerstroemia ovalifolia) which has been proven to have pharmacological benefits to prevent and overcome skin aging triggered by sun exposure (photoaging). The photoaging process begins with exposure to UV rays sourced from sunlight on the skin. Exposure to UV rays can trigger the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) compounds which result in oxidative stress conditions in skin cells both in the epidermis and dermis layers. Continuous oxidative stress conditions will affect the condition and function of skin cells both at the cellular and molecular levels. The leaves of the Benger plant (Lagerstroemia ovalifolia) extracted with 70% ethanol solvent using the percolation and ultrasonic wave method (Ultrasound Assisted Extraction) showed activity in reducing DPPH radical compounds and inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).Nitric oxide is a compound produced by cells during stress and is used as an indicator of inflammatory response. This invention relates to a method for extracting Benger plant leaves, which produces an extract that can reduce radical compounds (DPPH) as an illustration of antioxidant activity, and has anti-inflammatory activity as measured by the extract's ability to inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), and contains the marker compound quercetin.
