PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING AND COMPOSITION OF PROPOLIS EXTRACT IN THE FORM OF WATER-SOLUBLE POWDER

Abstract

This invention relates to the process of making and composition of propolis extract in the form of a water-soluble powder through the Self-Nanoemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SNEDDS) approach. The process of the invention begins with the formulation of propolis extract into a SNEDDS system that includes an oil carrier, surfactant, and co-surfactant, so that an isotropic system is obtained that is capable of forming a nanoemulsion spontaneously when dispersed in an aqueous medium. In one embodiment, the SNEDDS contains about 68% propolis extract, about 20% Labrasol, about 2% Tween 80, and about 10% propylene glycol. Next, the SNEDDS is converted into a solid form using a spray drying method with mannitol as a carrier, where mannitol is used at about 10% of the SNEDDS formula. The result of the process is a solid powder-SNEDDS of propolis extract that is stable, easy to handle, and capable of being re-dispersed in water to form a nanoemulsion.This invention can be applied in the fields of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, functional foods, and natural ingredient-based health products.
