Abstract

This invention concerns the processing of liquid waste from the fish canning industry using a biological method with an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) bioreactor. This system allows for biological processes including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. The bioreactor used is UASB with the addition of granular anaerobic sludge as a bioremediation agent. This invention is one method to overcome environmental pollution by industrial wastewater from food products, especially the fish canning industry. The processing process includes waste characterization before and after treatment, followed by a processing process in the UASB bioreactor. The parameters that are the test points are pH, Chemical Organic Demand (COD) value, protein value, carbohydrate value, TSS value, TS and VS value, as well as Mixed-Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) and Mixed-Liquor Volatile Suspended Solid (MLVSS) values. The optimum operating conditions of the UASB bioreactor at a maximum Chemical Organic Demand Loading Rate (COD-LR) of 0.486 g-COD / L / d and an average pH of 7.3 – 7.6. The achieved degradation rates include COD 80%, protein 40%, carbohydrate 78%, TSS 67%, TS 39%, VS 74%, MLSS 77%, and MLVSS 89%. This process is an alternative for processing waste from the fish canning industry that is cheap and environmentally friendly.
