Abstract
This invention concerns the process of extracting alginate contained in Turbinaria murayana seaweed using the acid pathway extraction method for use as feed additives in poultry. The process of extracting alginate from Turbinaria murayana seaweed according to this invention begins with the stage of weighing 50 grams of Turbinaria murayana seaweed flour, then soaking it in 1% HCl solution for 30 minutes with a ratio of 1:10 (w / v). Then it is filtered using filter paper and rinsed with distilled water. The filtered residue is soaked again in 1000 mL of 7.5% Na2CO3 solution for 30 minutes, then filtered using filter paper. The filtered filtrate is taken and added to 500 mL of 5% HCl solution which is precipitated for 5 hours. Next, 500 mL of 7.5% Na2CO3 solution is added and then 96% alcohol is added to precipitate the alginate. The precipitate was separated, then dried in an oven at 50°C for 17 hours to obtain dry alginate powder to be used as feed additive for poultry. The alginate powder produced in this invention has a water content of 13.44%, ash content of 23.74%, purity level of 36.28%, viscosity level of 15.75 cPs, molecular weight of 76.786 g / mol, and alginate yield of 26.93%.
