Abstract
This invention concerns an RFID and Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart shopping cart with a mobile application used for automated product identification and transaction management in a retail environment. The system comprises a shopping cart, passive RFID tags on products, an RFID UHF reader and antenna, a microcontroller-based control unit, an LCD display, a wireless communication module, a cloud database, and a mobile application. The RFID reader reads the EPC or UID of the product tag, and the control unit validates the reading using a dwell time-based temporal filtering mechanism before the data is entered into an active transaction. Consistent tag readings are classified as valid data, while transient readings are ignored as irrelevant readings. The system also provides an item cancellation mechanism through re-scanning the RFID tag within a specified time window.Transaction data is stored in a cloud database with UNPAID and PAID transaction statuses and displayed in real-time on a mobile application. This invention is useful for reducing the need for manual scanning, improving product traceability, accelerating the presentation of shopping information, and supporting more efficient retail transactions.
