Abstract
This invention relates to a method for manufacturing biomass-based activated carbon electrodes through enzymatic treatment for energy storage applications. The method includes the stages of lignocellulosic biomass preparation, carbonization at high temperatures to produce carbon precursors, refinement, and chemical activation using an alkaline solution to form a porous structure. The resulting activated carbon is then modified through enzymatic treatment using papain enzymes with varying composition ratios through a process of mixing, incubation, and drying. This treatment results in changes in surface characteristics, including an increase in functional groups and pore structure that support electrochemical performance. The modified material is then formulated into an electrode by mixing with a binder and conductive additives to form a slurry, which is then coated on a substrate and dried.The resulting electrodes exhibited improved conductivity, capacitance, and charge transfer efficiency compared to the untreated material. This method can be applied to a wide range of biomass and provides a controlled approach to the production of activated carbon materials for the development of energy storage devices.
