AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

MT-type straddled vehicles face challenges in starting from an idle-reduction engine stopped state due to differences in hand and foot manipulations compared to four-wheeled vehicles, leading to potential engine stalls and increased noise during the starting process.

Method used

The implementation of a crankshaft-linked starter generator connected to the engine without a clutch, allowing for quiet and quick engine restarts by transitioning the manual clutch to a disengaged state, even when the transmission is in a non-neutral state, and limiting the number of restarts to conserve battery power and reduce wear.

Benefits of technology

This configuration enhances the convenience of starting the vehicle from an idle-reduction engine stopped state by reducing the likelihood of engine stalls and noise during restarts, while also conserving battery power and minimizing clutch wear.

Abstract

Provided is an MT-type straddled vehicle in which an engine is stopped during idling and which exhibits improved convenience in operation for starting from the engine stop state. This MT-type straddled vehicle performs a series of processes comprising: (A) stopping an engine when a condition of an engine stop during idling is satisfied; (B) while the engine is stopped by process (A), starting the engine in response to transition to a manual-clutch disengagement state resulting from an operation performed on a clutch lever by a driver; and (C) at least following the starting of the engine by process (B), when the engine has stalled as a result of transition to a manual-clutch engagement state resulting from an operation performed on the clutch lever by the driver for the purpose of initiating movement of the vehicle under a condition where a manual transmission is in a non-neutral state, restarting the engine in response to transition to a manual-clutch disengagement state resulting from the operation performed, in the non-neutral state, on the clutch lever by the driver. Accordingly, assistance for initiating movement of the vehicle in a case where the vehicle cannot be moved after start of the engine is performed.
