AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing sanding machines struggle to achieve a polished and satin finishing effect on non-flat surfaces without scratching the materials, necessitating the use of specialized machines for this specific effect.

Method used

A brush with abrasive bristles arranged radially and in a curvilinear profile, mounted on oscillating abrasive blocks, providing uniform contact and pressure, and made of nylon covered with corundum or carbide, is used in combination with sanding machines to achieve the desired finish.

Benefits of technology

The brush enables a polished and satin finish on non-flat surfaces without scratching, allowing the use of standard sanding machines, eliminating the need for specialized equipment.

Description

Ml 9 9U 0 0 8;7 ,i I 16 FEB. 1999 -, . j~~ DESCRIPTION of the industrial utility model entitled: “BRUSH FOR THE SURFACE TREATMENT OF MATERIALS” in the name of the company MASTER SERVICE Srl, with registered office in Pescantina (VERONA) The present invention relates to a brush for the surface treatment of materials, and in particular to a brush that can be used in combination with sanders for the surfaces of materials that are not perfectly flat, in order to give the latter a particular polished and satin effect. There are already known polishing machines for surfaces of non-perfectly flat materials such as granite and stoneware, which can also be used on other materials, such as porcelain stoneware, ceramic, marble, and other stones. These known polishing machines comprise a rotating drum with a base equipped with a plurality of abrasive blocks that are oscillated by special motorized devices around axes arranged radially with respect to the rotating drum's axis of rotation. This arrangement achieves uniform polishing of the surface of the treated material, even when the flatness of the surface presents imperfections. The purpose of this invention is to use these known sanders to achieve a new type of surface treatment that gives the treated material a unique and pleasing polishing and satin finish, a result never achieved before with these sanders or with other surface treatment machines. This purpose is achieved by using, in combination with these sanders, an innovative brush whose main characteristics are specified in the first claim and other characteristics are specified in the subsequent claims. Thanks to the particular shape of the bristle support, the brush according to the This invention can be advantageously mounted on standard sanders in place of the oscillating abrasive blocks that perform the sanding process. With this solution, in addition to achieving this new polishing and satin-finishing effect, it also becomes superfluous to purchase a dedicated machine exclusively for this effect, since it is possible to use these standard sanders, generally available in any workshop that performs surface treatment of materials. According to a particular aspect of the invention, the bundles of abrasive bristles are advantageously arranged in a substantially radial orientation with respect to the centre of rotation of the rotating drum, thus avoiding the risk of scratching the materials to be treated. According to a further particular aspect of the invention, the ends of the bundles of abrasive bristles are included within a substantially curvilinear profile, so as to obtain uniform contact and pressure on the material to be treated during the oscillation of the brush. Finally, to accentuate the desired effect, the abrasive bristles advantageously have a flattened profile and are made of nylon coated with corundum or carbide, such as the material called Tynex® from the DuPont® company. Further advantages and characteristics of the brush according to the present invention will be evident to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of one of its embodiments with reference to the attached drawings in which: - figure 1 shows a perspective view of this embodiment; - Figure 2 shows a top view of the embodiment of Figure 1; - Figure 3 shows a bottom view of the embodiment of Figure 1; and - Figure 4 shows a side view of the embodiment of Figure 1. Referring to these figures, it is seen that the brush according to the present An embodiment of the invention comprises a support 1, preferably made of plastic material and having a substantially parallelepiped shape. A plurality of parallel grooves, specifically four grooves, are formed on the larger upper surface of the support 1. In each groove, one end of a bundle of abrasive bristles 2 is inserted and glued, for example, using a two-component epoxy glue. These abrasive bristles preferably have a flattened cross-section, for example elliptical or rectangular, and are preferably made of nylon coated with corundum or carbide, such as the material called Tynex® from DuPont®.The grit of the abrasive bristles 2 can be chosen freely depending on the intensity of the effect you wish to obtain, however it has been observed that a pleasant polished and satin appearance is given to most materials using abrasive bristles with a grit index between 46 and 320. The grooves in which the bristle bundles 2 are inserted are preferably arranged longitudinally with respect to the support 1 so that when the brush according to the present invention is mounted on an oscillating device of the rotating drum of a sander, these grooves are arranged in a substantially radial orientation with respect to the center of rotation of the drum itself. To obtain uniform contact and pressure during the oscillation of the brush, the internal pair of bristle bundles 2 protrudes from the support 1 by a greater length than the external pair of bristle bundles 2, so that the ends of these bundles are included within a substantially curvilinear profile, as shown by the dotted line in Figure 4. In order to mount the brush to an oscillating device of the rotating drum of a sander, the lower larger surface of the support 1 is suitably joined to the upper base of an insert 3 which substantially has the shape of a prism. having bases and two opposing lateral surfaces of a trapezoidal shape. In particular, the upper base of the insert 3 has a slightly smaller extension than its lower base, allowing for a double dovetail joint with a complementary recess in the oscillating device of the rotating drum. The insert 3 is preferably made of a single piece of plastic material, such as PVC, with the support 1 of the bristles 2. Any variations and / or additions may be made by those skilled in the art to the embodiment described and illustrated herein while remaining within the scope of the invention itself.
