Designated Inventor: Josef Cykman. Filed on: September 14, 1984 G7S24A / 84 SUMMARY Arrangement to prevent the theft of a motor vehicle by locking the gear lever to a fixed part of the motor vehicle, characterised by a rigid bar fixed to a part of the body of the motor vehicle in the vicinity of the lever JAGOBACGf - CASETTA à PERANi of the gear, and parallel to the latter, a padlock body rigidly mounted on the bar, and a padlock locking handle intended to be locked on the padlock body, with the lever enclosed by the handle. The present invention relates to anti-theft devices for motor vehicles, and more particularly to an arrangement for preventing the theft of motor vehicles by locking the gear lever to a fixed part of the motor vehicle. There are many known arrangements intended to immobilize the gear lever by locking it, for example at the steering THERE IS. GM / mg or a vehicle pedal. The locking device itself takes the form of a bar or chain equipped with appropriate locking provisions. However, experience has shown that these known devices do not effectively protect against sophisticated and well-equipped vehicle thieves. It is therefore the object of the invention to provide locking means that are more secure than the type previously specified. The invention provides an arrangement for preventing theft of motor vehicles by locking the gear lever to a fixed part of the motor vehicle, characterized by a rigid bar fixed to a part of the motor vehicle bodywork in the vicinity of and parallel to the gear lever, a padlock body rigidly mounted on the bar, and a padlock locking handle designed to be locked to the padlock body with the lever enclosed by the handle. The handle may be separable from the lock and enclosed in a block having a recess to receive the lever in its locked position. These and other advantages of the invention will be more fully understood in light of the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, given by way of example only, with reference to the drawings. 2. annexes, in which: Figure 1 represents a three-dimensional schematic view of the arrangement according to the invention; Figure 2 represents a side view of the arrangement illustrated in Figure 1; Figure 3 represents a front view of the arrangement illustrated in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a top view of the arrangement illustrated in Figures 2-3; and Figure 5 illustrates the lock body and lock locking handle in their detached or separated positions. Figure 1 shows a part 10 of the vehicle that allows for the mounting of the gear lever 12 (usually the part of the floor corresponding to the front right side of the driver). As also illustrated in Figure 1, a bar-like member 14 is provided that extends vertically parallel to the gear lever 12. The bar 14 is made of hardened steel or other suitable material and includes an enlarged lower section 14' with any suitable arrangement by which it can be securely attached to a body or chassis portion of the vehicle. In the exemplified embodiment, the bar is attached to a contoured floor portion 16 of the vehicle (see 3. Figure 3) using four screws 18 tightened against, and welded to, a safety contrast plate 20. Obviously, any other formal assembly or fastening can be used, taking into account, among other things, the shape and contour of the floor section 10 of the vehicle, which varies from one model to another. At the free end of the bar is mounted the body or casing of a padlock 22. The padlock body 22 is shown welded to the bar 14, but any other means of attachment may be used. The counterpart to the padlock body 22 is a handle 24, which is preferably separable from the body 22, as is clearly illustrated in Figure 5. As is also illustrated, the curved portion of the handle 24 is embedded in a block-like metal casing 26, which is provided with a recess 28 to receive the gear lever 12 in the locked position of the arrangement, as is more clearly shown in Figure 4. Thus the padlock becomes, in its locked position, a virtually unitary body that prevents access (by saws or other cutting devices) to the arms of the handle 24. It will now be easily understood how the arrangement according to the present invention constitutes a simple but extremely effective means against the theft of a motor vehicle, which is so common today. It will also be noted that many modifications CASETTA & PERANI vacant 4. and variations of the invention may be applied without departing from its scope as defined in and by the appended claims.

Claims
