Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are provided for inserting at least a portion of an in-vivo analyte sensor for sensing analyte levels in a subject's bodily fluid. The sensor insertion component can include a small-diameter needle positioned at an angle of about 7 to about 10 degrees relative to an insertion force path perpendicular to the skin, with a soft, elongated sensor and a sharp tip supported by a U-shaped guard along an intermediate portion of the sensor. Advancing the needle into the subject along this path stretches the skin around the needle, allowing the sensor tip to enter the body. The sensor can include a distal ridge for engaging the U-shaped guard to transmit the insertion force to the sensor tip.
