Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure relates to adhesive patches, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to medical grade adhesive patches configured for use with infusion devices. [Background technology]
[0002] Infusion devices are often utilized to provide therapeutic agents to patients over an extended period of time, typically one to three days. Such infusion devices are typically affixed to the skin via an adhesive patch. Many conventional adhesive patches have one or more drawbacks or limitations. For example, many conventional adhesive patches peel off around their edges, which may require the user to apply additional adhesive to prevent the infusion device from becoming dislodged from the application site. In addition, many conventional adhesive patches cannot be replaced while maintaining the position of the infusion device, requiring the needle to be removed and reinserted, which may cause additional discomfort for the patient. Furthermore, many conventional adhesive patches obscure the infusion site, preventing the user from inspecting the condition of the infusion site. For these reasons, among others, there remains a need for further improvements in this field of technology. DISCLOSURE OF THEINVENTION

[0020] 1, a device 80 is shown according to certain embodiments. The device 80 generally includes a medical device 100 configured to be placed on a patient, an adhesive patch 200 configured to adhere the medical device 100 to the patient's skin, and an attachment device 90 for attaching the medical device 100 and the adhesive patch 200.
[0021] As described herein, the attachment device 90 generally includes a first attachment member 92 provided on the adhesive patch 200 and a second attachment member 94 provided on the medical device 100, the second attachment member 94 configured to be removably attached to the first attachment member 92. In certain embodiments, the first attachment member 92 includes an adhesive layer 93 including an attachment member adhesive composition 93'. In certain such configurations, the attachment member adhesive composition 93' is different from an adhesive composition 205' that is capable of adhering the first region 203 of the adhesive patch 200 to the skin of a patient. In addition to, or as an alternative to, the second adhesive composition 93' being different from the first adhesive composition 205', the attachment device 90 may include a mechanical fastener. Further details regarding additional exemplary configurations of the attachment device 90 are provided herein with reference to FIGS. 9-12.
[0022] The medical device 100 generally includes a base portion 110 and a housing 120 that contains the working components of the medical device 100. Although the illustrated medical device 100 is provided in the form of an infusion device, it is contemplated that the adhesive patches described herein may be utilized to secure other forms of medical devices to a patient's skin.
[0023] The base portion 110 generally includes a patient-facing side 111 configured to face toward the patient's skin during use of the device 100, and a second side 112 opposite the patient-facing side 111. In the illustrated form, the second side 112 carries the second attachment member 94 of the attachment device 90. For example, the second side 112 may form the second attachment member 94, or the second attachment member 94 may be fixed (e.g., adhesively adhered) to the second side 112.
[0024] The housing 120 is disposed on the second side 112 of the base portion 110 and houses the working components of the medical device 100. As noted above, the illustrated medical device 100 is an infusion device. As such, the housing 120 may house a reservoir of therapeutic agent and a needle operable to subcutaneously deliver the therapeutic agent to a patient. It is contemplated that the housing 120 may house additional or alternative components, such as in embodiments in which the medical device 100 is provided in a form other than an infusion device.
[0025] 2, the adhesive patch 200 generally includes a first or patient-facing side 201 and an opposing second side 202. The adhesive patch 200 also includes a first region 203 configured to contact the patient's skin and a second region 204 that is attached to the base 110 via an attachment device 90. More specifically, the second region 204 comprises a first attachment member 92 of the attachment device 90. In the illustrated embodiment, the first region 203 and the second region 204 are located on the patient-facing side, with the first region 203 at least partially surrounding the second region 204. As described herein, it is contemplated that the first region 203 and the second region 204 may be located on opposing sides of the adhesive patch 200, with the first region 203 not necessarily surrounding the second region 204.
[0026] The first region 203 comprises a first region adhesive layer 205 including a first region adhesive composition 205' configured to adhere to the patient's skin. The second region 204 comprises a first attachment member 92 of the attachment device 90. In certain embodiments, the second region 204 may be stiffer than the first region 203. Such a difference in stiffness of the substrate 208 can facilitate more uniform attachment of the second region 208 while allowing the first region 203 to flex in response to patient movement.
[0027] As noted above, certain embodiments of the first attachment member 92 include an adhesive layer 93 that includes an adhesive composition 93'. In certain such embodiments, the first region adhesive composition 205' may have a greater adhesive strength than the first attachment member adhesive composition 93'. Such a difference in adhesive (sticky) properties may allow the first region adhesive layer 205 to adhere securely to the skin while facilitating removal of the adhesive patch 200 from the medical device 100 during replacement of the adhesive patch 200. In certain embodiments, the periphery of the first adhesive layer 205 may include a second adhesive composition 205" having a greater adhesive strength than the first adhesive composition 205' to prevent the edges from peeling off the patient's skin after application.
[0028] The illustrated adhesive patch 200 comprises a first section 206 and a second section 206', each comprising a corresponding respective portion of the first region 203 and a corresponding respective portion of the second region 204. The adhesive patch 200 may include one or more perforations 207 to facilitate separation of the first section 206 and the second section 206'. In the illustrated form, the perforations 207 divide the adhesive patch 200 into two substantially identical sections 206, 206'. The sections 206, 206' are not necessarily identical, and the perforations 207 may divide the adhesive patch 200 into three or more sections.
[0029] The adhesive patch 200 also includes a substrate 208 defining an opening 209 operable to receive the housing 120. A patient-facing side 201 and a second side 202 are defined on opposing sides of the substrate 208. In certain embodiments, the adhesive patch 200 further comprises a protective film that covers the adhesive layer 205 and / or the first attachment member 92 prior to use.
[0030] In using the apparatus 80, the medical device 100 can be placed in a suitable position on the patient's skin. Either before, during, or after the insertion of the needle into the patient's skin, the medical device 100 can be secured to the patient's skin using the adhesive patch 200. In embodiments including a protective film, the protective film can be removed, thereby exposing the adhesive layer 205 and / or the first attachment member 92. The adhesive patch 200 can then be positioned such that the first region 203 contacts the patient's skin and the second region 204 contacts the second surface 112 of the base portion 110, while the housing 120 extends through the opening 209. In such position, the first adhesive layer 205 adheres the adhesive patch 200 to the skin, while the attachment apparatus 90 secures the adhesive patch 200 to the base portion 110. As a result, the position of the medical device 100 relative to the patient's skin is maintained by the adhesive patch.
[0031] During use, while the medical device 100 remains useful in its installed position, certain performance characteristics of the adhesive patch 200 may begin to deteriorate. For example, an edge of the first adhesive layer 205 may begin to peel away from the patient's skin. While such peeling may be prevented by providing a stronger adhesive composition 205" around the periphery of the adhesive layer 205, as described above, it may still be desirable to replace the patch 200 while maintaining the position of the medical device 100. In such situations, features of the illustrated patch 200 may aid in maintaining the position of the medical device 100 while replacing the patch 200. For example, a user may be provided with a replacement adhesive patch 200 and separate the replacement adhesive patch 200 into a first section 206 and a second section 206', for example, by tearing the replacement adhesive patch 200 along a perforation 207 thereof. The user then removes the applied first section 206 of the adhesive patch 200 for replacement while maintaining the second section 206' in its affixed state so that the second section 206' maintains the medical device 100 in its installed position. After applying the first section 206 of the replacement adhesive patch 200, the user removes the second section 206' of the original adhesive patch 200 for replacement while maintaining the first section 206 of the new adhesive patch 200 in its affixed state. This maintains the medical device 100 in its installed position while replacing the second section 206'.
[0032] As is apparent from the foregoing, the illustrated adhesive patch 200 is configured to facilitate replacement of itself while maintaining the medical device 100 in place during replacement, such that the needle of the infusion device 100 remains embedded during replacement of the patch 200, reducing patient discomfort by eliminating the need to reinsert the needle.
[0033] 3, there is shown a device 80' according to certain embodiments. Similar to device 80 described above, device 80' includes a medical device 100. Device 80' also includes an adhesive patch 300 according to certain embodiments, with an attachment device 90 attaching adhesive patch 300 to the medical device.
[0034] 4, the adhesive patch 300 generally includes a first patient-facing side 301 and an opposing second side 302 formed on opposing sides of a substrate 308. The adhesive patch 300 includes a first section 303 and a second section 304, and may further include a perforation 307 to facilitate separation of the first section 303 and the second section 304. In the illustrated form, the perforation 307 divides the adhesive patch 300 into two substantially identical sections 303, 304. It is contemplated that the sections 303, 304 need not necessarily be identical, and the perforation 207 may divide the patch 300 into more than two sections.
[0035] A first adhesive layer 305 including a first adhesive composition 305' is formed on the first side 301 of the first section 303. A second adhesive layer 306 including a second adhesive composition 306' is formed on the first side 301 of the second section 304. The second side 302 includes a first attachment member 92. The first attachment member 92 is partially formed in the first section 303 and partially formed in the second section 304 such that each of the first section 303 and the second section 304 includes a corresponding respective portion of the first attachment member 92. In certain configurations, the attachment device 90 may include an adhesive composition different from the first adhesive composition 305' and / or the second adhesive composition 306'. Additionally or alternatively, the attachment device 90 may include a mechanical fastener. Further details regarding additional exemplary configurations of the attachment device 90 are provided herein with reference to FIGS. 9-12.
[0036] In the illustrated configuration, the patient-facing side 111 of the base portion 110 includes a second attachment member 94. Thus, in this embodiment, the attachment device 90 serves to attach the patient-facing first surface 111 of the base portion 110 with the second surface 302 of the adhesive patch 300. In the illustrated configuration, substantially all of the adhesive patch 200 is disposed between the base portion 110 and the patient's skin such that the base portion 110 covers substantially all of the adhesive patch 200. It is also contemplated that a portion (e.g., a tab) of one or both of the sections 303, 304 may protrude beyond the perimeter of the base portion 110.
[0037] It should be appreciated that the adhesive patch 300 including multiple sections 303, 304 can facilitate replacement of itself in a manner similar to that described above with respect to the adhesive patch 200 including multiple sections 206, 206'. For example, a user may be provided with a replacement adhesive patch 300 and separate the replacement adhesive patch 300 into its first and second sections 303, 304, for example, by tearing the patch 300 along its perforations 307. The first section 303 of the applied adhesive patch 300 can then be removed for replacement while maintaining the second section 304 in its affixed state such that the second section 304 maintains the medical device 100 in its installed position. After application of the first section 303 of the replacement adhesive patch 300, the user can remove the second section 304 of the original adhesive patch 300 for replacement while maintaining the first section 303 of the new adhesive patch 303 in its affixed state, thereby maintaining the medical device 100 in its installed position while replacing the second section 304.
[0038] 5 and 6, an adhesive patch 310 is shown according to certain embodiments. The adhesive patch 310 may be utilized in the device 80', for example, in place of the adhesive patch 300 described above. The patch 310 is somewhat similar to the patch 300, and similar reference numbers are used to indicate similar elements and features. For example, the patch 310 includes a substrate 318, a first side 311, and an opposing second side 312, a first section 313, a second section 314, and perforations 317 that facilitate separation of the first section 313 and the second section 314. The first side 311 of the first section 313 includes a first adhesive layer 315 that includes a first adhesive composition 315', and the first side 311 of the second section 314 includes a second adhesive layer 316 that includes a second adhesive composition 316'. For the sake of brevity, the following description of the patch 310 will focus primarily on features that differ from those described above with respect to the patch 300.
[0039] In the illustrated form, the first section 313 at least partially surrounds the second section 314, with a set of primary perforations 317 formed at the boundary between the first section 313 and the second section 314. In certain embodiments, additional perforations 317' extend from the primary perforations 317 toward the outer edge of the adhesive patch 310 to facilitate removal of the first section 313. In certain embodiments, further perforations 317" extend along the additional perforations 317' such that the second section 314 includes an extension 314' formed between the additional perforations 317' and the further perforations 317".
[0040] In certain embodiments, the first adhesive composition 315' and the second adhesive composition 316' are different from one another. For example, the first adhesive composition 315' can have a stronger adhesive strength than the second adhesive composition 316'. In such an arrangement, the stronger adhesive composition 315' can prevent peeling around the edges of the patch 310, while the weaker adhesive composition 316' can allow additional movement against the skin. In certain embodiments, the first adhesive composition 315' can be a non-silicone adhesive composition selected for durability. In certain embodiments, the second adhesive composition 316' can be a silicone-like adhesive that increases in strength over time.
[0041] In certain embodiments, the substrate 318 may exhibit different properties in the first section 313 as compared to the second section 314. For example, the substrate 318 in the first section 313 may be formed of a first material and / or have a first weave pattern. The substrate in the second section 314 may be formed of a second material and / or have a second weave pattern. For example, the substrate 318 in the first section 313 may be formed of a stiffer material and / or have a tighter weave pattern to prevent delamination, while the substrate 318 in the second section 314 may be formed of a less stiff material and / or have a looser weave pattern to provide superior flexibility and / or breathability for the patient's skin.
[0042] The second side 312 of the patch 310 includes a first attachment member 92 disposed at least partially within the first section 313. For example, the first attachment member 92 may extend around an outer edge of the first section 313 to prevent delamination from the base 110. In certain embodiments, the attachment member 92 is disposed partially within the second section 314, for example, to enhance attachment to the base 110. In other embodiments, the attachment member 92 is omitted from the second section 314 to provide increased breathability relative to the patient's skin.
[0043] It should be appreciated that the adhesive patch 310 including multiple sections 313, 314 may facilitate replacement of itself in a manner similar to that described above with respect to the adhesive patch 200 including multiple sections 206, 206'. For example, a user may be provided with a replacement adhesive patch 310 and separate the replacement adhesive patch 310 into its first and second sections 313, 314, e.g., by tearing the patch 310 along its perforations 317, 317', 317". The user may then remove the first section 313 of the applied adhesive patch 310 for replacement while maintaining the second section 314 in its applied state such that the second section 314 maintains the medical device 100 in an installed position.
[0044] 7, there is shown a device 80'' according to certain embodiments. Similar to device 80 described above, device 80'' includes a medical device 100. Device 80'' also includes an adhesive patch 400 according to certain embodiments, with an attachment device 90 attaching adhesive patch 400 to the medical device.
[0045] 8, the adhesive patch 400 generally includes a substrate 410 having a first side 412 facing the patient and an opposing second side 414. A first adhesive layer 420 is disposed on the first side 412 and a first attachment member 92 is disposed on the second side 414. The first adhesive layer 420 includes a first adhesive composition 422. The first attachment member 92 includes at least a portion of a mechanical fastener and / or a second adhesive composition that is different from the first adhesive composition 422. Further details regarding exemplary embodiments of the attachment device 90 are provided below with reference to FIGS. 9-12.
[0046] The illustrated adhesive patch 400 further includes a color changing composition 440 configured to change color upon exposure to a particular fluid. In the illustrated form, the color changing composition 440 is provided within the substrate 410. It is contemplated that the color changing composition 440 may also be provided within the first adhesive layer 420, or elsewhere on and / or within the adhesive patch 400. Although the adhesive patch 400 shown in Figures 7 and 8 is provided as a single piece patch without perforations, it should be understood that the color changing composition 440 may also be provided in a multi-section patch, such as those described above with reference to Figures 1-6.
[0047] As noted above, the color changing composition 440 is configured to change color when exposed to a particular fluid. In a particular embodiment, the particular fluid is air, and the color changing composition 440 is configured to change color when exposed to air for a predetermined period of time. In a particular embodiment, the predetermined period of time corresponds to the useful life of the medical device 100. For example, if the infusion device 100 holds a sufficient amount of therapeutic agent to last for three days, the color changing composition 440 may change color when exposed to air for more than three days, thereby indicating to the patient that the infusion device 100 needs to be reloaded or replaced. As will be appreciated, the patch 400 may be stored in a vacuum sealed package prior to use such that the three day period does not begin until the package is opened for application of the patch 400.
[0048] In certain embodiments, the particular fluid that causes color changing composition 440 to change color is a therapeutic agent being dispersed by infusion device 100. For example, if infusion device 100 contains an insulin product, color changing composition 440 may change color when exposed to the insulin product, thereby indicating to a user that a leak has occurred. As another example, if infusion device 100 contains a chemotherapy product, color changing composition 440 may change color when exposed to the chemotherapy product, thereby indicating to a user that a leak has occurred.
[0049] 9-12, there are shown various embodiments of mechanical fasteners 50 that may be utilized, for example, in connection with the attachment devices 90 described herein. More specifically, FIG. 9 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a hook-and-loop fastener 510, FIG. 10 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a hook-and-loop fastener 520, FIG. 11 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a snap fastener 530, and FIG. 12 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a synthetic bristle fastener 540.
[0050] 9 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a hook and loop fastener 510. A first surface 511 (e.g., defined by one of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a number of hooks 512 projecting therefrom and a second surface 513 (e.g., defined by the other of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a number of loops 514 projecting therefrom. When the surfaces 511, 513 are pressed together, the hooks 512 engage the loops 514 to releasably secure the surfaces 511, 513 to one another.
[0051] 10 illustrates a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a hook-hook fastener 520. A first object 521 (e.g., one of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a plurality of first hooks 522 projecting therefrom, and a second object 523 (e.g., the other of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a plurality of second hooks 524 projecting therefrom. When the objects 521, 523 are pressed together, the first hooks 522 engage the second hooks 524 to releasably secure the objects 521, 523 to one another.
[0052] 11 shows a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a snap fastener 530. A first object 531 (e.g., one of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a female snap member 532 attached thereto, and a second object 533 (e.g., the other of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a male snap member 534 attached thereto. When the objects 531, 533 are pressed together, the snap members 532, 534 releasably engage with one another to releasably secure the objects 531, 533 to one another.
[0053] 12 illustrates a mechanical fastener 500 in the form of a synthetic bristle fastener 540. A first object 541 (e.g., one of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has a plurality of synthetic bristles 542 attached thereto, and a second object (e.g., the other of the base portion 110 or the adhesive patch) has an engagement surface 544. The synthetic setae 542 may be a biomimetic structure that mimics, for example, the structure and performance of a gecko's foot. When the objects 541, 543 are pressed together, the synthetic bristles 542 engage the engagement surface 544 to releasably secure the objects 541, 543 to one another.
[0054] In one existing approach for adhering an infusion device to a patient's skin, a patch is applied after a needle is inserted into the patient's skin. Certain embodiments of the present application include attaching the infusion device 100 to the patient's skin prior to needle insertion, which may facilitate needle insertion at a predetermined angle.
[0055] In certain embodiments, the skin-facing adhesive layer can be replaced with a mechanical fastener, such as an array of microneedles.
