Abstract
Materials for substance capture, such as ion exchange materials, and associated methods and systems are generally described. In some cases, sorbents are provided that can capture undesirable species from fluid mixtures, such as wastewaters. The sorbents include ceramic particles (e.g., as resins), which can be functionalized to effectively and / or selectively capture per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs) and / or metal- or metalloid-containing ions (including heavy metals). Systems and methods for further processing species captured by the sorbents are also provided. For example, some embodiments are directed to mechanochemical processing of the captured species associated with the sorbents. Subjecting captured species, such as PFASs, to mechanochemical transformations can destroy potentially harmful contaminants in a relatively inexpensive and distributable manner.
