Abstract

To provide an image forming apparatus that can securely keep a primary transfer belt away from a photoreceptor during attachment and detachment of the primary transfer unit.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises a detachable primary transfer unit 42 and a unit lock part 110 that regulates removal of the primary transfer unit. The primary transfer unit includes a contact and separation mechanism that brings a primary transfer roller into contact with the photoreceptor and separates the primary transfer roller from the photoreceptor. The contact and separation mechanism includes a plurality of arm members, a link member 78, and a grip part. The unit lock part can make a transition from a locked state to an unlocked state in conjunction with a user's operation to move the link member to a release position by using the grip part.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 10
