AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Existing smoking articles do not effectively extinguish safely and hygienically without interfering with their function, and manual extinguishing methods can lead to undesirable contact with burning embers or loose ash.
Method used
A smoking article design featuring a hollow tubular element at the filter's upstream end, with a tipping wrapper having a line of weakness, allowing the lit end and unburned tobacco to be safely extinguished by pressing into the tubular element, minimizing contact with fingers and ash.
Benefits of technology
The design ensures rapid and hygienic extinguishing with reduced risk of ash or ember contact, maintaining the smoking article's function and reducing loose ash generation.

Abstract
To provide a smoking article enabling being extinguished in a safe and sanitary manner without hindering a function of the smoking article during smoking.SOLUTION: A smoking article 10 includes a tobacco rod 11 and a filter 12 aligned with the tobacco rod in an axial direction. A tipping wrapper 16 circumscribes a part of the filter and a part of the tobacco rod, and fixes the filter aligned with the tobacco rod in the axial direction. The filter is provided with: a hollow tubular element 13 at a filter upstream end adjacent to the tobacco rod; and a first segment of a filter material adjacent to downstream of the hollow tubular element. The chipping wrapper includes a weak line 17 disposed at an interface between the hollow tubular element and the tobacco rod or upstream thereof. The tobacco rod, the first segment of the filter material and an internal surface of the hollow tubular element define a recess 14. The recess is designed to receive an end on an ignition side of the smoke article and any unburnt tobacco materials when a consumer extinguishes the smoking article.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
