AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Patients in critical condition due to shock, particularly high-output shock, often require high doses of catecholamines like norepinephrine to maintain blood pressure, which can lead to toxic side effects and tachyphylaxis, and no single vasopressor has shown to improve outcomes over others.

Method used

Administering low doses of angiotensin II to increase and maintain blood pressure without or with low doses of catecholamines, reducing the need for high catecholamine doses and minimizing side effects.

Benefits of technology

Angiotensin II effectively raises and stabilizes blood pressure in shock patients, reducing the required dose of catecholamines to safer levels, thereby improving survival and minimizing toxic effects.

Abstract

To provide the use of angiotensin II for treatment of hypotension.SOLUTION: A method comprises administering, to a subject who is in hyperdynamic state and under treatment with a catecholamine at a dose equivalent to more than about 5 mcg / min of norepinephrine, a dose of angiotensin II which is effective to raise the blood pressure of the subject to a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of more than about 80 mmHg, and which is effective to reduce the dose of the catecholamine required to maintain a MAP of more than about 80 mmHg to the equivalent of less than about 5 mcg / min norepinephrine.SELECTED DRAWING: None
