AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional driver assistance applications do not effectively consider a driver's skill level and confidence level, leading to reduced driving safety for experienced drivers when implementing semi-autonomous maneuvers and distracting or frustrating them, while failing to enhance safety for inexperienced drivers.

Method used

A computer-implemented method that calculates driver characteristics based on physiological attributes to estimate skill and confidence levels, using models to adapt vehicle operations accordingly, thereby enhancing safety by tailoring assistance to individual driver capabilities.

Benefits of technology

Improves driving safety across a broader range of drivers by dynamically adjusting vehicle functions based on real-time skill and confidence assessments, reducing distractions and enhancing safety for both experienced and inexperienced drivers.

Abstract

To provide automatic estimation of skill levels and confidence levels of drivers.SOLUTION: In various embodiments, a driver sensing subsystem computes a characterization of a driver based on physiological attribute(s) of the driver that are measured as the driver operates a vehicle. Subsequently, a driver assessment application uses a confidence level model to estimate a confidence level associated with the driver based on the characterization of the driver. The driver assessment application then causes driver assistance application(s) to perform operation(s) that are based on the confidence level and modify at least one function of the vehicle. Advantageously, by enabling the driver assistance application(s) to take into account the confidence level of the driver, the driver assessment application can improve driving safety relative to conventional techniques for implementing driver assistance applications that disregard the confidence levels of drivers.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
