Abstract

A lubricating oil composition for an internal combustion engine having a roller follower type valve train is disclosed. The composition comprises a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, one or more magnesium detergents in an amount to provide 100-1000 ppm magnesium to the lubricating oil composition, 0.1-0.5 wt. % of an organic friction modifier, and d) optionally a viscosity modifier present at 0.5 wt. % or less. The composition is substantially free of molybdenum friction modifiers and has a total boron content in the range of 20-200 ppm.
