Abstract

Disclosed is a surgical assembly for use with an ultrasonic surgical device configured to deliver ultrasonic vibrations to patient tissue for use in cutting or cauterizing patient tissue during a surgical procedure. The assembly includes an ion generation electrode configured to receive an electrical signal for generating ions proximate to the site of a surgical procedure to remove particles floating proximate to the surgical site, and a controller for controlling the application of the electrical signal to the ion generation electrode. The assembly further includes a sensing arrangement for sensing the presence of ultrasonic vibrations, the sensing arrangement being communicatively coupled to the controller and configured to output an activation signal to the controller to cause an electrical signal to be applied to the ion generation electrode when the sensed ultrasonic vibrations include a frequency within a predetermined frequency range.
