Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a composition comprising a polycarbonate, at least one compound of formula (A), and at least one UV absorber other than the compound of formula (A). The present invention further relates to an additive mixture comprising at least one compound of formula (A) and at least one UV absorber. The present invention also relates to the use of the additive mixture for increasing the optical properties of molded or extruded articles, including multilayer articles.

Background Art

[0002] Polycarbonate molded or extruded articles are known in the literature and are prepared for a number of applications. These articles are produced, for example, by extruding a composition comprising a polycarbonate. Coextrusion of the polycarbonate and, in addition, other compositions containing a relatively high proportion of UV absorber may optionally occur. However, polycarbonate has the disadvantage of being essentially UV - unstable per se.

[0003] To prevent the adverse effects of ultraviolet light on articles made from polycarbonate, various additives, such as hindered amine light stabilizers, UV absorbers, etc., are used. However, these additives or mixtures of these additives cannot significantly improve the stability of polycarbonate molded or extruded articles.

[0004] Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to overcome the above - mentioned disadvantages and to provide a polycarbonate comprising a composition having improved optical properties. It is particularly desirable to improve the optical properties of polycarbonate sheets and polycarbonate articles.

[0005] Another object of the present invention is to provide a polycarbonate composition that can be used to prepare polycarbonate articles or sheets having improved optical properties, particularly delta E and yellowness index.

[0006] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a composition for improving the weather resistance of a polycarbonate sheet or article.

[0007] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an additive mixture that can improve the optical properties of polycarbonate when incorporated into the polycarbonate. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION MEANS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEM

[0008] Surprisingly, it has been found that the additive mixture of the presently claimed invention, namely, a combination of at least one compound of formula (A), at least one UV absorber other than the compound of formula (A), and polycarbonate, improves the optical properties of a polycarbonate sheet or polycarbonate article exposed to light, thereby extending the life of the polycarbonate sheet or polycarbonate article and generating economic value.

[0009] Accordingly, in one aspect, the presently claimed invention is directed to a composition comprising: i. Polycarbonate in an amount in the range of 90 to 99.9% by weight based on the total weight of the composition; ii. At least one compound of formula (A) selected from formula (A-1), (A-2), (A-3), (A-4), (A-5), (A-6), or (A-7) in an amount in the range of 0.02 to 0.8% by weight based on the total weight of the composition CHEM. Claims

1. Compositions containing the following: i. Polycarbonate in an amount ranging from 90% to 99.9% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition; ii. An amount of at least one compound of formula (A) selected from formulas (A-1), (A-2), (A-3), (A-4), (A-5), (A-6), or (A-7) in the range of 0.02 to 0.8% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition. 【Chemistry 1】 【Chemistry 2】 【Transformation 3】 and iii. At least one UV absorber other than the compound of formula (A), in an amount ranging from 0.4 to 2.5% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition.

The composition according to claim 1, wherein the polycarbonate is selected from homopolycarbonate, copolycarbonate, thermoplastic polyester carbonate, polycarbonate / acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer blend, polycarbonate / acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer thermoplastic alloy, polycarbonate / polybutylene terephthalate thermoplastic alloy blend, polycarbonate / polyethylene terephthalate thermoplastic alloy, or polycarbonate and styrene-acrylonitrile thermoplastic alloy.

The composition according to claim 1, wherein the UV absorber is selected from 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole, 2-hydroxybenzophenone, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine, cyanoacrylate, oxanilide, benzooxazinon, substituted and unsubstituted benzoic acid esters, or a mixture of two or more thereof.
