A phosphinate or composition of phosphinates obtainable or obtained by the reaction of at least a phosphinic acid of formula (I) and an oxirane of formula (II). The phosphinates or compositions of phosphinates can be used as reactive or additive flame retardants in the preparation of flame retardant polymers or polymer compositions.
